These were reflecred in rheir 1277 record, remarked Miss lloberra Perkins, coach of rhe reom. The ieam consisred of rwelve members, Helping rhe coach, were assisranrs Miss Mary Wrighr and Mr, Rick Ikeda. A big Thankyou was in order for Miss Wrighr and Mr. Ikeda. They worked wirh rhe girls' individual problems, along wirh running plays. Somerimes even geiring in and playing wifh rhe ream, Working wirh rhe girls was grear fun. As a srudenr reacher, l'm iusr old enough ro have rheir respecr as a coach, while l'm srill close enough ro high school life rhor l can be rheir friend foo, Miss Wrighr menrioned . The coaches felf fhaf Corvallis was rheir roughesr comperirion over fhe season. They were an excel Ienr ream alloround, commenred Miss Wrighr, Miss Wrighf also menfioned, Our ream is made up of such diversify, fhar rarher rhan one person being rhe srrongesr player, we have several srrong players who work as a ream ro make our game a powerful one. Laurie Soufhwell, a junior, has been playing Volleyball for five years, junior high and high school. She was caprain, and one of the main serrers for rhe JV. ream, We had a fair record, buf so many people learned so much fhar nexr year should be near perfecr, srared Sourh- well. Learning how TO ser consisranrly was whar Sourhwell concenrrafed on rhe mosr during rhe season. This helped her ro be able ro rhink abour hand posirion and following rhrough wirh her sers. First Seoson o success South Solem's first yeor Girls' Soccer Teom hod ci very productive seoson with o record of four wins ond two losses. The two losses were ogoinst Cresent Volley ond Corvollis which hove hod previous yeors of experience in octuol competition ploy. First yeor cooch for the girls soccer teom, Mr. Hoight, sold, l'Corvollis hod three more yeors of experience thon we did. They weren't bigger girls or more othletic thon our girls, they were just more experienced ond knew whot to do ond where to go ond how to ploy the gome, He went on to soy thot he hod to stort the gomes with mostly freshmen ond only four out of the fifteen girls on the teom hod ony previous experience ploying soccer. x'We hod to reoch them the rules of the gome os we ployed, not only the techniques, but olso the signols of the referee. We hod to reoch them everything from the ground up. A more difficult problem wos trying to get more girls interested into going out for the sport. When soccer wos first introduced to South os o vorsity sport, mony of the students weren't thot interested. He commented obout this soying, l'l hod to reolly work to get people out to ploy. When he hod enough to moke o teom, the girls went on to stort ploying some gomes. The girls won their first gome ogoinst South Albony C8-25 ond then lost to Cresent Volley COYOD. From there on, the girls won most of their scheduled gomes ogoinst other Solem teoms until they met Corvollis for the leogue title. The girls lost thot gome lO- O. Cooch Mr. Hoight recognized Shonnon Reilly os being the most dedicoted ond voluoble ployer to the teom. He soid she scored mony of the gools ond she mode olmost every proctice of the seoson ond wos one of the four who hove hod previous experience ploying soccer. Trocy Johnson, Toni Andersen, ond Michelle Buscher were the other three girls who were recognized by Cooch Mr. Hoight os being especiolly good on defense. Lynn Beoton o iunior expressed her thoughts obout the first seoson of soccer ond how well the teom did in their first yeor of competition ploy We look upon this seoson os o winning one We took third in leogue ond hod o lor of fun Since we hod o young ond inexperi enced teom this first yeor wos helpful in teoching us the fundomentols of soccer ond developing our competitive skills We would like to thonk our cooch Mr Hoight for the time ond effort he put into working with us Without his cooch ing we wouldnt hove hod the greot seoson thot we did 24 GIRLS SOCCER A.
