Spirit: The word for freshmen Winning one game and losing six, the Fresh- man football team should have been down, But that was not the case with this year's team. Spirit was the main word for the Fresh- men. By chanting offense or defense throughout the games, they tried to boost each other's morale. This, along with the sup, port of the team captains, Dan Stalie and Dan Pickens, kept the players in the games. Freshman football was new this year with the addition of Oth grade students to South. New, also was the players' familiarity with the plays South ran. The Freshmen players had to learn the basic plays that the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams had learned in previous years. keeping their team healrhy was one of the problems the coaches had to deal with. 'll-lav- ing people our with injuries was a large contri- bution to our losses, stated Scott Cross, defen- sive coach. Throughout the season, key people on defense and offense were hurt. Two of the team's quarterbacks, Dan Pickens and Todd Mitchell, were iniuried, which kept them from playing the remainder of the season, Both Coach Cross and offensive coordinator Chuck Chamberlain said that the Freshmen team had improved from the first day to the last, I had fun. lr was my first year coaching Freshmen.
