She graduated from Minot Teachers' College in Minot, North Dakota and obtained her master's degree from Willamette University. Miss Heringer taught in New Zealand for a year under the Fulbright Exchange program and has been at South High for four years. She was advisor to the class of '59 and cadet teaching advisor previous to becoming Dean of Girls. Mr. Neil Brown, our good-natured vice-principal, mainly super- vises the instructional procedure to be followed during the year. A graduate of Willamette University, he obtained his master's degree there also. Mr. Brown was vice-principal at Parrish Junior High before coming to South High where he has been for the past tive years. His duties include everything from advising the scholarship chairman to directing lunch-line traFlic. Mr. Del Ramsdell became South High's new Dean of Boys this year. He graduated from Willamette University where he also obtained his master's degree. Previous to coming to South High five years ago, Mr. Ramsdell taught speech at North High. Last year he taught English and assisted with various counseling du- ties. Mr. Ramsdell's new iob is a demanding one, but he finds it interesting and enioyable. He always exhibits the finer qualities suited to such a position and is to be commended for a iab well done. Our school is young and our teachers, whether young or old, are all young at heart. As our school grows so will its teaching staff expand. As time marches on, many teachers will leave South High, but others who desire to educate our future citizens will replace them and contribute to the continuous cycle. in-X l - ' U MAURICE ADAMS All of our teachers strive to guide us in leading Retail Selling Deboie happy, useful lives. We buzzed around finding ourselves in all sorts of activities - in pep club, in sports events, in talent shows, decorating tor after game dances, and in many, many other things. Ot all the things we remember of our Sophomore days the Sophomore class party stands out. As Juniors we were a dynamic class, taking the lead in many school functions, we won the United Fund Drive, and, after struggling through the Iowa tests, placed forty of our members in the top QW: of the nation. We presented the Seniors with one ot their most important tinales - the Junior- Senior prom, lt Happens Every Spring. Our last act as Juniors was sending a classmate to the Philippines as a foreign exchange student. As South's '58-'59 year, our senior year, comes to a close, we look back on it as a prosperous year. For the second consecutive time we have won the United Fund Drive. The student body was lead by a number of outstanding senior otticers, and mighty Saxon teams were backed by a vig- orous rally squad. Many scholarships and honors have been placed on our classmates this year, showing that a prosperous class is on its way toward building a more prosperous Oregon. 9,041 fx Car washing helped the seniors in winning the United Fund Drive this year. This year, a lucky Junior traveled to New Zealand in February as an exchange student and will return in Sep' tember. Finalists tor the honor, new to Juniors this year, were Susie Feiring and Jayanne Harvey. Alternates were Alice Berglund and Kay Arthur. The theme ot the Junior-Senior Prom was carried out with much enthusiasm to Bid the Seniors farewell as the Juniors took their places. The King and I was spon- sored at the Junior class movie, and helped to raise money tor the prom. In the United Fund Drive, the Juniors ran a close second to the Seniors and lost only by tour dollars. Under the helpful guidance ot advisors Mr. Whiteman, Mrs. Heilcen, and Miss Manary, the Class of i960 tulhlled their duties promptly and ethciently. They taced up to and met their problems, always willing to work for a better school. Before the newness of high school had soaked in, the sophomores found Themselves in the auditorium taking the Iowa Achievement tests. This was a shock to the sophs because it was the tlrst time sopho- mores had been required to take the tests. Being a class full of vim and vigor, they began showing their worth by waging a lively campaign for the U.F. The sophomores grand total for this drive was 5189. The Three Faces of Eve, the soph's movie, was enjoyed by the student body as well as the 480 sophomores enrolled at South High. lt was held in the middle of March. Another big first for the sophomores, was the use of advanced biology classes. The classes are the first of this sort offered to sophomores. Mike Calaba is possibly soying to Tom Hoy, I iust don't get this English. SOPHOMORE CLASS COUNCIL, FIRST ROW: Miss Hudson ladvisorj, V. VanHouten, B. Lovellette, R. Douglas, K. Sprague, J. Dodge, B. Through rain, fog, and almost any kind of weather, the Saxons were out on the field fighting for the glory they could bring their school. Spectators thrilled at the long runs by Dennie Glasgow and Phil Steinbock, breathetaking passes from Wes Stewert and Gary Calaba, and the many examples of spectacular backing and block- ing by our hard-hitting line. Likewise we wept when our best was not enough to bring our fifth victory over our rivals, North Salem. z, ,I t 1.,. .. - Q'S:Q l I s i'liS:f'1,Q:sljE- ': . ,. , , '.a,gf:..:-,Ma-gm, -ii, 1 g ,M A it gg gf 2 1 l 5 P Q We W' 8 sb 1 555, xll 5'fN . -. . fl--Hb' tl W at K gl .15 5 at s 1 W S as 5 Q, K s i , A 9 L 2 Q it A gre I S we lx Ai Ill' ,W - ya if mega H Durwin Pibum, Sr, Mortin Bowes, Sr. Dennis Glasgow, Sr. Delbert Sheldon, Jr. Holfbczck Holfbock Hcilfbock Holfbock Halfbacks, Tackles and 'Kim Clark, Jr. Holflaock Tom Dunham intently listens to half-time instructions. i - r Q?
