The narrative of school life is traditionally begun with the com- mencement exercises of last June. The theme of the Exercises was the Centenary of the Founding of Buffalo. The commencement wiki TIATQT orations were delivered by Elinor VV. Hill and Daniel Vander- meulen. Marvin A. Rapp, the president of the class delivered the valedictory. There were two hundred seventy four in the graduating class, forty-six of whom received diplomas with honor and two hundred sixteen of whom received diplomas with credit . Alice Williamson and Daniel Vandermeulen were tied for first place with marks of 98.4'k and each received a Senior Gold Medal. Daniel Vandermeulen also won the Jesse Ketchum medal. South Park students obtained eleven of the scholarship awards made annually by the University of the State of New York. Each such scholarship entitles the holder to one hundred dollars a year for the four years of his or her college course at any approved college in New York State. Forty scholarships are alloted to Erie County, of which twenty-five were won by Buffalo public high school students. Of this number, South Park secured eleven. The winners from South Park High School were: Daniel C. Vandermeulen, Alice Ann VVilliamson, Russell Nlowry, Howard R. Studd, Betty Ella Wahl, Eunice Margaret Howell, Anna Teresa lVIcKen- zie, Floyd F. Fried, Leo Callaghan, Caroline Pauline Lichtblau, llildred Elizabeth Yavicoli. At the Commencement exercises in June, Doctor Robert T. Bapst bade a fond farewell to South Park High School before taking up his duties as Associate Super- intendent of Education in charge of Secondary Schools. Dr. Bapst organized the schooland for eighteen years had guided the destinies of this institurlon. Through his untiring efforts and enthusiastic zeal, he had placed it in the forefront among the secondary schools of the State. All South Parkers join in wishing him success and happiness in his new field and they are pleased to know that he will still be able to keep a fatherly eye on Old South Park . Mr. Frank P. Regan, former assistant principal, was appointed principal to succeed Dr. Bapst, and Mr. F. N. McCarthy, former Head of the Nlathematics Department took over the duties of lVIr. Regan. The school year 1932-33 opened September 6, 1932 with an increase in regis- tration of 481, the total registration being 2789. Four hundred freshman students llll r ' u ,L I 4110! 1 ,iff vw XAXX were accommodated at School No. 67, where an annex of the high school was opened with lVIr. John N. Chassin in charge. The death of Mr. Albert E. Ernst, teacher of printing at South Park since the opening of the high school, was a sad blow to the members of the faculty and the stu- dent body. lVIr. Ernst had endeared himself to all with Whom he came into contact and his selfless interest contributed immeasureably to the wellbeing of the school. In lllarch, Mr. Ernest P. Kionke, Head of the Classical Language Department at South Park, was promoted to the newly created position of Director of Classical Languages for all the high schools of the city. Mr. Kionke had long been a faithful and loyal worker at South Park and he carried with him into his new position the best wishes of the entire faculty and student body. The increased registration, the death of Mr. Ernst and the promotion of hir. Kionke necessitated the addition of many new teachers to the faculty. For the second consecutive year, the lnterscholastic Debating Contest was won by South Park. Both debates were won in the fall and one debate in the spring. In the lnterscholastic Boys' Oratorical Contest, David Roche took second place, and Anna Nlae lN'IcCarthy received honorable mention in a statewide essay contest spon- sored by the Sons of the American Revolution. i South Park participated in athletics as enthusiastically and wholeheartedly as in former years. ln the Harvard Cup Football series, the Yale Cup Basketball series and the Cornell Cup Baseball series, South Park's showing was most creditable. Equally creditable was the schoo1's record in the lnterscholastic Cross Country Run and in the Golf and Track meets. Christmas at South Park was celebrated in the traditional manner. Three per- formances of the colorful f'Christmas Spirit were given, two on successive afternoons and one for adults in the evening. Many of the former students wended their way back to South Park to join in the ever old and ever new Christmas carols and to live again memories of the happy days at high school. The Alumni Association re-union was held on the evening of December 26. The banquet was served in the cafeteria with Doctor Bapst as the guest of honor. George Prenatt, President of the Association presided. The banquet was followed by danc- ing in the spacious gymnasium, which had been beautifully decorated for the occa- sion with multi-colored lights and Christmas greens. The officers elected for the new year were President, George Prenattg Vice-President, John Clinton, Treasurer, Mary Travers and Secretary, Mary Bess Hamm. Senior Day-that day of days for the prospective graduates-was observed on June lst. The usual impressive exercises were held in the auditorium in the pres- ence of the seniors and their mothers, followed by the parade of the students and the planting of the class ivy. Dining and dancing for the seniors in the evening brought a memorable day to a happy and successful close. And so, the school year of 1932-33 draws to an end-a year, which like a page out of life, has been full of changes and eventful happenings-but the spirit of South Park still goes forward, full of hope and confidence of greater things yet to be . So spoke Carlyle, many years after the death of Sir Walter Scott, eulogizing, in a few brief words, 'a man im Q whose name has been mdissolubly linked these many years with the 2' ?, creation of color, and beauty, and romance, conceived, perhaps, by k Q: the poetic idyll of his own vivid existence. V VVhile yet a small boy, Walter Scott was sent to his grandfather's farm to receive treatment for an incurable malady. There he ruled, a veritable little lame prince, going to their gorse-dotted pastures with the sheep, riding a shaggy pony, and sitting at his grandfatherls hospitable Hreside, where his grandmother spread for him the enchanted cloak of her tales-border-land ballads, and legends of the locality, dealing, for the most part, with the courageous deeds of his ancestors. Thriving in this environment, his health improved, until, as he became a man, he was of immense stature and handsome features-a man whose lameness was no social handicap, and no impediment to the hard, swift riding in which he gloried. lf, Nigga' j wise X He had scarcely embarked upon his legal career when he married 'Charlotte Carpenter, a French refugee, and the possessor of all the inherent charm and beauty of her race. For a time after his marriage he plodded along at the practice of law, but he was shortly aroused to take an active interest in the field of letters. His was not the career of a rapt genius whose art burned, a white, ethereal Hame like an altar candle, to be choked out by adverse circumstances as abruptly as it was lightedg his was the concrete substance of an inimitable story-teller, glowing with a radiance as cheering, as steadily burning as one of his grandfatherys hearth-fires. Every phase of his existence, every factor of his environment, contributed fuel for the spark of his literary ability. A laboriously made translation was accepted and acclaimed, and this stirred his ambition. For material, he turned to old tales, beloved in boyhood, and from this inspiration sprang the ballads and novels for which the World reveres him. Scott's works were something of an innovation to the literature of his period. He was primarily an entertainer, and one can imagine that many of his tales-per- haps his sparkling, stirring Ivanhoe, and his colorful Guy Mannering,-found their origin before the great fireplace of his own hearth, where, as the very Prince of Story- E581 , ' Q ' :gm 1 ,iff tellers, he delved into the realm of folk-lore, supplementing it generously with imaginary incidents, for the entertainment of his four lusty children. He was a rein- carnation of the old border minstrel. Scott sang for the sheer joy of singing-such songs as The Lady of the Lake, The Lay of the Last flflinstrel, and Marrzzion-songs which embodied the spirit of the wandering troubadour. His was a gregarious soul, he loved people, and he portrayed them with a master-touch, tempering tragedy with the inevitably lurking humor, balancing a dramatic situation with an abrupt introduc- tion of common sense. The publication of his books gave Scott a position of note among the writers of his age, and gave him also enormous pecuniary recompense. Delighting in this sub- stantial evidence of his talent, Scott flung financial discretion to the winds,-he satis- fied a long-cherished dream, and emulated the mode of medieval living in so far as was possible. He constructed a magnificent dwellingg surrounded himself with congenial guests, devoted himself to their lavish entertainmentg filled his stables with horses, and his kennels with dogs. He played the Lord of the Manor in a truly grand fashion until he was attacked by a series of physical ailments, and at the same time, suffered financial losses. The printing establishment in which he had invested became insol- vent, and left him in utter ruin,--but possessed of the determination to dig in the mine of his imagination, and there find diamonds to make good his engagements. Independent, self-sufficient old man that he was, it must have been extremely gratify- ing to him at this time, to have people in all walks of life offer him aid: Sir William Forbes his one-time rival in love, his son's young wife, his own butler, his children's former music master, peddlers at his gate, and men of wealth and position-all placed their fortunes at his disposal. Nor had Fate played her final card. In this same gesture with which she swept away his fortune, she took something infinitely more precious-his wife-his gay, courageous, sympathetic Charlotte, who had supplied every element which his nature had craved, who had been tender and brooding as a summer twilight, and merry and irrepressible as Laughter itself. He could not believe her dead, she had become so much a part of the pattern of his days. Presently he could no longer write, then, in a short time, he could not even dic- tate to an amanuensis. Life was beginning to lose its savor, the infirmities of old age were swiftly overtaking him, and he longed with all his heart to return to Abbotsford -longed so importunately that the arduous journey was undertaken. It was there he died, a century ago, on September Zlst, 18323 and it was there, near the peaceful, slow-winding Tweed which he had loved, that they buried him. Truly a Scot, in nature as in name, he had written with the canny perception, the keen intuition, which characterized his race. He had immortalized his native land, had portrayed her peasants flawlessly, had created an atmosphere of virgin forests with the tang of a northern sea rolling on hard white beaches, and a hardy fragrance, like a breath of heather, sweeping through it all. He had given the gift of vigorous, majestic prose to the world of letters. Now, his hearty singing voice at length silenced, he lay among the quiet hills, washed by the rivers, blessed by suns of home. X 1 5-' QM' , c S . ' Q ' T 'Y qiiizv- AMERICAN HISTORY ESSAY, Written by Florence Lehde, Class of '33 O THE UNITED STATES IN THE TIME OF SCOTT lVIy laws have armed the crowd with useful might, Have banished honors and unequal right, Have taught the proud in wealth and high in place, To reverence justice and abhor disgrace. UNM mf, HIS is what thirteen struggling colonies in America were fighting for when Sir Walter Scott, destined to become the creator and genius of the historical novel, was born. America's growth might easily be compared to the life of that l great English author. As in 1771, a famous author was born, so .i5R 93j g in 1776, a great nation was born. As this writer overcame all the hindrances of lameness and sickness and still bravely carried on when faced with bankruptcy, just so our great United States overcame all the hin- drances of the stormy time of its foundation and bravely carried on when faced with revolt and secession. As Scott strove on until every debt was paid, winning for him- self honor and respect, the United States fought on until she emerged victorious, a united nation, ready to take a leading part in world affairs, ever respected and esteemed. In 1776, four years after Scott's birth, the HDeclaration of Independence was signed. This marked the beginning of a new type of government, guaranteeing Hlife, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to all. For seven long years after that, the hardy American colonists fought against overwhelming odds to protect this declara- tion. Finally, in 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed, freeing them from England. The time from the signing of the Treaty of Paris to the adoption of the Con- stitution has been called the Critical Period of American history. European peoples watched with eagerness the struggling nation. Since independence was so new to them, the newly-formed states were reluctant to give up enough freedom to be dependent on a strong central government, fearing that it would become too auto- cratic. But, under the guidance of a few far-sighted men, they united under the Constitution' in 1787. E661 Q XAXX' fldvgp. i1- if The greater part of America's success in its early years must be attributed to three outstanding men, all Presidents of the United States-Washingtoxi, Jefferson, and Jackson. Washington led them to victory in the Revolution and the early years of the Republicg Jefferson came to their rescue when there was a feeling that the government might become autocratic and Jackson led the way in the development of democracy. While the fringe of land, bordering on the Atlantic Ocean, was under the control of England, little was accomplished in the way of art or literature, but immediately after the formation of the new government, the thoughts of the people began to turn to popular education. The young republic had little money to spend for schools, but, nevertheless, Congress passed a law, providing that one section of every township in the public domain should be set aside for educational purposes. Washington and Jefferson donated money for the erection of colleges. And Jefferson helped William and Mary's College form a new course of study, embracing a wider scope of knowl- edge, that included sciences and modern languages. Magazines and newspapers had renewed the zest for literature and art. During this period, influenced by the improved printing press, America produced some of her best authors, poets, and dramatists. Among these men were VVashington Irving, that inimitable humorist, creator of Knickerbocker's History of New York and the 'fSketch Book. Even now his characters, Rip Van VVinkle and Ichabod Crane, are known the world over. James Fenimore Cooper, another outstanding author, was writing historical novels, based on the history of America, at the same time that Scott was winning immortality for himself with his novels, based on European history. Nathaniel Hawthorne, too, contributed his bit to American literature by preserving for posterity the legendary tales of his native New England. Outstanding among the poets of the time, was William Cullen Bryant, author of the immortal Thana- topsis, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, author of many poems, the delight of old and young alike. These men stand out in age when hundreds of American minds were bent on giving to the world, something to prove their ability. In still other fields, America was forging ahead. By 1832, three great American artists, whose names will go down in history, had come into the limelight, John Trumbull, Gilbert Stuart, and Charles Peale, all portrait painters. In science and invention, America also advanced, led by Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat, Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin, and Peter Cooper, with the first railroad in the United States. Such were the accomplishments of Americans living in the time of Scott. Such were the ideas of government, education, and true progress, built painstakingly by those forefathers of ours into enduring and noble monuments, the contemplation of which has aroused the respect, the awe, and the admiration of succeeding generations. They, as well as Sir Walter Scott, helped to make their era great. If we, with our advantages, are able to contribute proportionately as much to civilization, 'we need not fear the verdict of our descendants when the history of our own times is written. i671 .
