Vlath program additions aid understanding, provoke interest New geometry books, a new course, and a computer ,were added to the math program in an effort to improve lstudent understanding of mathematics. Due to interest shown the year before, a Probability and Statistics course was offered second semester to those who had completed Algebra ll and Geometry. Algebra ll students ,used a Hewlett Packard 2000C computer in addition to Hheir texts. The computer itself was not at South but was lreached by teletype machine and telephone. The use of lthis computer was a first for South, and students and teachers found it a rewarding experience. A National lMathematics Contest was given in March with approxi- mately thirty-five advanced math students participating. Sacred Heart College hosted a College Bowl in which se- llected math students matched their wits with other high school students. By combining their efforts, the four math teachers presented an interesting and educating program of mathematics. l l Mr. Blackwood explains the relation of arcs and angles to his Geometry class by constructing diagrams. While teaching his students a part of German culture, Mr. Dieter Daub demonstrates the polka. xc DIETER DAUB - Coordinator: German Club It's your worldg foreign language helps students find it Approximately four hundred fifty students were enrolled in foreign language classes this year. Students found that knowledge of a foreign language opens up many new job opportunities and enables them to better under- stand the backgrounds and traditions of other nationali- ties. Teachers used the foreign language lab and panto- mime as teaching techniques for beginning students. Advanced courses placed emphasis on speaking and comprehension. Spanish students participated in the Concurso , a speaking fluency contest held at Wichita State University in October. A new Spanish teacher, Mrs. Mary Steele, and a new French teacher, Mrs. Patricia Peterson, were added to the staff. lt's Your World , a new course, focused on the language and customs of four different languages, German, French, Spanish, and Latin. Three years were offered in German and French and four years were offered in Spanish. Several students were enrolled in fourth year independent study courses in French and German. . i :is ' ss ,X I , PAT PETERSON - French Club: Building Comm. Division of history courses allows for more concentrated teachin New approaches to teaching social science courses were utilized in order to interest students in these classes. A Social Studies Honor Seminar, taught by Mrs. Betty Dil- lon, was offered to juniors and seniors. Researching var- ious topics in the library and relating them to today's world was the basis of this class. Reading several books concerning one subject was also a distinction of the sem- inar. Students of psychology and sociology, through the use of texts, films, and experimental games, acquired a better understanding of themselves and others. Govern- ment students discovered the mechanics of United States Government and followed political happenings throughout the world. The U.S. History course was divid- ed into four nine-week sections: Contribution of Minori- ties and Ethnic Groups to American Society, Contempo- rary problems, U.S. Foreign Relations, and Political His- tory, with a different teacher for each section. In this way a teacher could concentrate on a single facet of history and be better qualified to teach rather than being re- quired to teach the entire U.S. History course. Miss Bren- da Moses was added to the department as a teacher of Black History. After tests return, Mr. Lowrey enters scores in his grade book. NS Mrs. Betty Dillon calls on a student in an effort to encourage cla discussion. -- iiffl :f- 3 , ALBERT AH LSTROM , 'V ' 'i - Ca p a n d G o wn AA ' Co m mittee ,,Q, M' . 5 BETTY DI LLON 3' Z ' ' ' 5 f . ff' W , ,,i , ,..,. ,,.
