Modern approaches within courses initiate interest, enthusiasm Although English is a required subject, students have begun to enjoy it due to the new approaches initiated in the last two years. English classes were divided into four nine-week courses with a variety of subjects to choose from. By giving students the freedom of selecting cours- es they wished to enroll in, teachers felt that more knowl- edge of value was gained from English classes. Limited only by course phasing , the level of difficulty, sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors were mixed together in the classrooms. VVomen's Liberation, Media, and Compara- tive Religions were some of the favorites chosen by stu- dents. Miss Brenda Moses was added tothe language arts staff of seventeen teachers as a teacher of Corrective Writing and Encounter with Death. English Literature, World Literature, College Reading, and Senior Composi- tion were preparatory college courses offered to seniors. Speech, drama, debate, and journalism were other lan- guage arts courses in which participation was enthusias- tic and challenging. Students found that knowledge of a foreign language opens up many new job opportunities and enables them to better under- stand the backgrounds and traditions of other nationali- ties. Teachers used the foreign language lab and panto- mime as teaching techniques for beginning students. Advanced courses placed emphasis on speaking and comprehension. Spanish students participated in the Concurso , a speaking fluency contest held at Wichita State University in October. A new Spanish teacher, Mrs. Mary Steele, and a new French teacher, Mrs. Patricia Peterson, were added to the staff. lt's Your World , a new course, focused on the language and customs of four different languages, German, French, Spanish, and Latin. Three years were offered in German and French and four years were offered in Spanish. Several students were enrolled in fourth year independent study courses in French and German. . i :is ' ss ,X I , PAT PETERSON - French Club: Building Comm.
