Dr. Roberts prepares to award the first place trophy to the winning cross-country team. Judgemental decisions require interaction with students, faculty Replying and acting upon the called duties of the princi- pal of South High was Dr. Larry Roberts. The imperative decisions Dr. Roberts made concerning the interests of South High were contemplated with assurance. ln his first full year as the principal of South, Dr. Roberts was instilled with pride for his school and confidence in its future. Looking at South with an overall perspective, he felt that interaction between students, staff, and admin- istration was important for the success of the school year. The function of Student Government was given specific attention, and Dr. Roberts suggested the possi- bility of a Student Government accredited class. An out- doorsman, he enjoyed extra-curricular activities and frequented the YMCA, playing a vigorous game of hand- ball. His appearance at all school activities and his will- ingness to share a problem, opinion, criticism, and joke with students displayed his sincere interest in all areas of school life. Dr. Roberts exhibits his paddle-ball skill, displaying a perfected return ing stroke.

TED SHACKELFORD JIM HAUGHT Vice-principal Assistant Principal Dynamic three encourage involvementg stress communication Understanding, reliability, and efficiency were some of the qualities found in the men assisting Dr. Roberts in his role as principal. Serving as assistant principals, Mr. Theodore Shackelford, Mr. Mel Johnson, and Mr. Jim Haught dedicated themselves to the smooth operation of our high school. ln his fifth year at South, Mr. Shackel- ford continued to handle his administrative duties with efficiency. Supervising student schedules, classroom discipline, and cadet teachers involved Mr. Shackelford with the school body. This year Mr. Johnson worked pri- marily with attendance. He found his student contacts were fewer than in the past years. In order to remain in contact with South students he attended as many activi- ties as possible. Mr. Johnson logged two to three miles each day to keep up with active high school students. An addition to the staff this year was Mr. Jim Haught. His prime responsibility was the scheduling of all school ac- tivities. He served as assistant principal at Brooks Junior High and was previously a coach at Independence Junior High and East High. Finding students 'tremendous' to work with, Mr. Haught was enthusiastic about his first year at South. The administration always found time to listen to students and stressed continuous communica- tions as the dynamic unifying force which took place at South. These three capable leaders encouraged student involvement in the introduction of innovative ideas and the process of decision making. 20 .s MEL JOHNSON Assistant Principal wwf 4 i 4 H, gift ' f i - s gwigi, V ff .
