Increased reading skills, pioneered Braille program Teachers new to the language arts department were Mrs. Helen Harmon, Miss Marcia Willough- by, and Mrs. Virginia Moss. Two ofthese were replacements, the third, an addition to the staff. Mrs. Doris Smith, teacher of the Braille Resource Program, provided a class in which students learned to read and write braille. South, the only Wichita high school to have this program, has a library of over 350 braille books. Mrs. Robert Crow experi- mented with a developmental reading program us- ing a new reading machine and other materials to upgrade the reading rate, comprehension, and vo- cabulary of the students in the program. More in- terest in drama and debate was seen by greater en- rollment in those classes.
