Social Science Guided future leaders of democracy While studying the past and its effect on the present, social studies students prepared for the future. United States history, a required course for juniors, gave Colonels a background of the country in which they live. In government classes, students learned to be responsible citizens and to realize future civic duties. World history and international relations familiarized students with backgrounds and governments of foreign countries. The objective of the social studies department was to provide students with a knowledge of their country's freedoms so that they were able to enjoy their rights and privileges to the fullest extent. In sewing classes students learned how to select fabrics and were challenged to display their creative talents. Food classes provided girls with the opportunity of managing a budget and furnished modern facilities, enabling girls to prepare and serve full course meals. Special courses such as child care, home and family living, and house and home furnishings were available for those who wished to extend their study in home economics. At the end of the year, the girls had a chance to model their creations in a style show. Students who excelled in homemaking competed for the Betty Crocker scholarship award.
