Brocdened knowledge of distant places, people With a continuing increase in foreign rela- tions, teachers impressed upon Colonels the importance of learning to speak a foreign lan- guage. ln first year language courses, students studied conversation, basic grammar, and pro- nunciation. Second year stressed speaking, reading, writing, and grammar, while third year consisted of review of the preceding two years. Language courses also offered special opportunities. Third and fourth year Spanish students were privileged to participate in the Hconcursof' a state wide Spanish contest held at Wichita State. Other special opportunities for language students were the summer trips to France, Germany, and Spain. Languages offered by South included German, French, Latin, and Spanish.
