In the opener with Chaney, the Red and Blue chalked up their first victory then went down to defeat before a powerful Memorial team, offset that loss with a string of victories over Ursuline, Alliance and Niles, came off second best in their encounters with East and Woodrow Wilson, climaxed their season play with a sensational victory over Rayen, and, finally, indulged in a field day with Girard. , The Warriors scored 18 touchdowns to which they added 6 extra points for a grand total of 114 against 63 tallied by their opponents. The season produced the usual quota of outstanding players among whom were listed eleven graduating seniors, eight juniors and a lucky string of thirteen sophomores together with a host of substitutes whom Manager McEvey eulogized in the following manner: 4'To you the fans in the stands . . . 'gMaybe you call him the man behind the team, this substitute who waits hopefully on the bench for his chance to break into the game, this Zeigler, Jones, Bell, Fagin, Barrett, Richards, Rigney, Goodall, Albaugh, Sybrant, Wil- liams, Kay, Compolito, Hays, Weaver. SOUTH vs. CHANEY ln the first game of the season, the Red and Blue of South High defeated a fighting Chaney eleven, 7-6. The accurate passing and hard running of Beckenbach, the fine defensive play of Bell, and the outstanding line play of Poulakos were the main factors in enabling the Warriors to hold the line and clear the way for Beckenbaclfs smash through the line for the lone marker. SOUTH vs. URSULINE For the third consecutive season the Warriors defeated Ursuline, this time by the score of 13-7, to add one more victory to their City-Series chain. Beckenbach scored two touchdowns as the determined Red and Blue line held the Fighting 1rish to one score. Walter Jones and ,lim Compolito starred in the defensive play-Beckenbach in the offensive. SOUTH vs. EAST The South High Warriors suffered their first city-series defeat of the season at the hands of a powerful East High team. Despite the fact that the Warriors were able to score two touchdowns in four plays, they were power- less to stop the on-rush of an East team that swept aside the South 13-12 edge and chalked up its own impressive 18-13 tally. Beckenbach, Turner and Poulakos were stand-outs for South. SOUTH vs. WILSON The South Warriors went down to their second consecutive defeat in the series, this time at the hands of the powerful Wilson Presidents. The final score: 19-13. The impressive lead taken hy Wilson early in the game and maintained until the final quarter was smashed hy a two-touchdown South rally that sent the Presidents into the sky-ways for a flash pass that gave them another marker and the game. Mike and ,lim Compolito and Turner captured defensive-play honors in the contest. SOUTH vs. RAYEN ln the last city-series game of the season, the Red and Blue-clad Warriors took the measure of their old rival, Rayen, and forged another victory link in their chain by a score of 13-6. Taking a seven point lead in the first quarter, South added another six in the fourthg but a brilliant run by Tobachino of Rayen narrowed the margin to seven points and kept the Warriors on the alert for a repeat performance. The victory over Rayen broke the thirty-year deadlock of twelve games won, twelve lost and six tied. For the second consecutive year, Coal Al Beach maneuvered the South High cagers into scoring position for city championship honors. Victories over East, Rayen, and Ursuline and a sensational go at Wooilrow Wilsoxi gave the Red and Blue the edge in the contest: while the final QRIIIC with Scienceville polished off the second leg 011 the city-series traveling trophy, wherein is reflected the glory of the South High basketcers who vanquished all local contenders except the Chaney High courtmen. The hard-hitting, sharpshooting Canton Timken, however, proved too much for the Warrior tribe and they experienced their second defeat of the season. With one city-series game annexed, the Red and Blue moved in against Rayon, took their Imeasure, and defeated them by a decisive 34-26 score. For South, Soller was high-point man, and Coppersmith, the wi1111er of laurels for excellent defensive play. In the Alliance encounter with Beckenloach leading the way, the Warriors polished off a 32-26 score, but displayed a tarnished 27-45 in the struggle with the Sharon High outfit. The game with Sharon's rival, Farrell, gave South clai111 to one 111ore victory. The third city-series game proved a near-calamity when Chaney set the Wzlrriors back on their heels and won the ball game. However, after this defeat, the Wzlrriors hit another winning streak that carried them successfully through the next six games, the last of which marked the close of the official season.
