UR presentation of the annual record of South High
school from a student viewpoint may seem childish and
innane to the casual reader, but we believe that a careful
analysis of our efforts will yield a fair picture of the modern
American student who, while he realizes and appreciates the
freedom that he and his fellow Americans alone enjoy today,
attempts to conceal his more serious thoughts behind an
impenetrable wall of indifference.
The 1943 Annual is an earnest endeavor on the part of
the entire annual staff and advisers to present a true picture
of high school days. The natural pride that we all feel for
South High School's unbroken chain of yearbook publications,
and the general urge of members of the senior class to reveal
themselves at this time as typical American students prompt
us to pattern this annual after a student notebook. We have
tried to include bits of everyday lingo, unvoiced comments of
students and teachers, and pictures and records that are truly
characteristic of a high school student.

GEORGE A. BOWMAN
I happen to he one out of 24-,433-2-14,4433 Youngstown students! Now,
it dawns on me what they mean when they say, Gflust one of the many." Maybe
l'm the 13,338th or even thc 24,433rd, but I think l'd rather be the ll,l0lst.
Vvhat if we were given our numbers and compelled to wear them! l Hut since
we belong to the South High Democratic Union instead of the Badkids
Local Union we 11evcr hear anything like this, 'GNumher ll,l0l, stand and
recite the first paragraph of today's assignment" or, u13,970, where is your
excuse for cutting the third period yesterday?"
Wllat an odd way to learn and be happy! Could be that men like Mr.
Bowman have figured it out O. K. after all!
