Work, Work, Working Many ot South's students spend their evenings and spare time working and earning money to spend on many of the necessities of high school, and some work to support themselves. Many of the students save money for things like college, cars, clothes and partying on the weekends. Others just spend it as it comes, and even others use it on school trips or school activities. Many of Souths students are on the work program. They go to school for half the day and then they go to work and earn credits to graduate. Many of the students like the program and feels that it gives them a chance to find out what the working world is like. Most of the people work in or close to the neighborhood where they live, but there are a few who work out of the area. There are many places where South students work. You will find most of Souths students working in places such as hospitals, grocery stores, Burger King, Mac Land, Target, or other fast food outlets. Even though South has the highest dropout rate in the city, we have the highest percentage of students who work and have plans to work after graduation, ,,g.-aus... ul -61 i 3 . on '45 t Mu H K' M .z .hlvY '!I 3 MLO.E Hems T o Educate Young Mothers The M.l.C.E. program CMotherflnlant Care Educationl is provided at South High for young mothers who want to finish their education. The Day Care is run by Sue Ryan, Bernice Smith, and social worker Pernilla Lembke. The CDT's fChild Development Techniciansb or lnlantfToddler teachers are Patty Dow- dle and Julie Peters. Every morning the young mothers bring their children to the nursery to spend the day. They pick them up after 6th hour. The center is located in the Home Economics section at South. The moms are assigned to the nursery like a regular class and they take care ol all the kids. There is usually 2-3 girls in the center per hour. They get credits for it just like any other class and are graded each day according to their participation in class with the kids. The M.l.C.E. program takes kids up to 2 and a half years old. They can stay in the program all three years ol high school. There is also a Family Life!Parenting class taught by Bernice Smith. lt is required for three trimes- ters. 4 122 1. Top South Hi h Students Belon To National Honor Society The National Honor Society is based on scholarship, character, service and leadership. A student needs a 3.5 GPA to become a member. Students who are eligible must follow a specific procedure, which includes recom- mendations by teachers, parents and a review committee evaluation. The Honor Society students plan to work on a service project for the school, and they also sponsored the hayride on Sno-Daze. A In April, juniors along with other seniors who qualify will be inducted into the society. 1. Chris Ozolins and Warren Kaari think up new ideas for the National Honor Society. 2. This year's National Honor Society Officers were Sheryl Lowy, Sec.-Treas., Kris Ozolins, Presidentg Liz Mahoney, Vice President, Advisors Jerome Tyler, loan Groth, Warren Kaari and Richard Friedrichsen.
