With sincerity we give thanks to our parents, the angels who financed our play. Our gratitude goes to the teacher producers. and our encouragement to the understudies who shall follow us. Above all, we give our supplication to God that He will grant us courage as we perform on the stage of life. This past school year has been one of busy activity. The annual Homecoming Cor- onation with all its beauty and excitement made an appropriate opening night for our school s social calendar. On November 22 a long-lived dream of South High and the city ofOmaha came true when voters approved the S20 000 000 Bond issue. This means that the hope of a new building and a much-needed auditorium for South High will be- come a reality soon. Next on our social program came the yearly ROTC Promotion Dance. It was a time of suspense for the boys who were promoted to the next highest rank. On December 18 20 21 our four choirs presented their annual Christmas pageant Music and the Spoken Word. It was a thrilling and inspiring scene for all who wit- nessed the performance. At the December 18th program our First Choir gave a preview of their new hard-earned robes of cranberry red. Naturally January means senior class elections which are always exciting and this year was no exception The race for president was so close that a special vote had to be taken in order to break the tie. - During the latter part oflanuary and early February South High received a new face- lifting. The walls in the new building were repainted in fresh pastels. Our Military Ball washeld on February 17 at Peony Park. Everyone sensed the feeling of suspense as the new officers were announced and our Lieutenant Colonel revealed. One ofthe major high-lights in the school year is our variety show the Sound Off. The 1956 production was based on a street scene and it made a hit with everyone. The Spring Play was a result of hard work and hours of rehearsal. It seems we can always depend upon our Dramatics Department for a fine performance. During the 1955 56 school year South High had many firsts. Three new clubs had their premiere and for the first time in fourteen years the Choral and Dramatics De- partments combined to present an operetta The Mikado. A very important new or- ganization Safe Teens was introduced to the students. This city-wide club is designed to promote safe driving among teen agers The Student Council deserves a curtain call for all the effort spent in promoting dances and sponsoring severalother school activities during the year. They are the stage crew for many productions but seldom receive due recognition for a job well done. Ending the social year at South High was the annual Senior Prom held at the Peony Park Ballroom It was a beautiful scene as usual and will long be remembered. At this time we applaud our fine sports program which brought recognition to the Packers during the past year The Freshman Football squad was undefeated as they be- came the lntercity champions and our Varsity team was among the top ten in Nebraska The wrestlers won North High s Invitational Wrestling Tournament by defeating Cen- tral s Eagles the previous champs The Packers grapplers won both the Inrercity and State titles South sbasketball playerswere the best in many years. They took an early lead in the Inrercity League race and were top contenders throughout the season ending in first place The dreams of our seniors came true on graduation night when they took their final I I P 1 . 1 1 l t l . , . . .. .. Krebs 4 I TO THE CLASS OF 1956-- We extend to you, our graduates of 1956, sincere good wishes for success and happiness as you join the many who, too, have completed their high school education. Each year, thousands ofyoung people walk across stages to receive slips ofpaper which signify completion of another step in the process of learning. Each year, as graduates I assume their active places in the community, they face a challenge. Every generation in the history of mankind has had to meet new conditions in an ever-changing world. And you, graduates of 1956, may well assume that yours is no exception. Although you may say that times are different, you face the world of today with un- precedented advantages. We live in an age when educational opportunity has reached greater numbers than ever in the past. No generation has been as well equipped with the means to work out its problems. You have greater promise of successful careers than any group has ever known. These advantages, however, are yours to use. They will not operate to assure suc- 1 alw- lxv '41 as always, come from within yourselves. In wishing you well, we should remind again that there is only one answer to any prob- 4 I lem and that ishard workg there is but one answer to any challenge and that is courage: there is no answer to doubt but confidence. A. Sheets, vet- eran boys' counselor, about problems of freshman students. More than any other South faculty members, the counselors deal most directly with the drama of life, and their collective services are designed to produce a happy ending. They work withthe students of their respective classes to plan a cur- ricular program which will insure a scholastic growth, meet their needs while they are in school, and prepare them for whatever course seems most advisable after graduation. In addition they aid their counselees in solvingpersonalproblems and show them the advisability of continuing their schooling and attending classes regularly. Junior and senior counselors also assist their charges in obtaining part-time and post graduationjobs and in securing information on colleges and scholarships. May this feeling of personal loss which each one shall experience be overshadowed by the enrichment each shall have gained through his associations with you during the past four years. As you approach your newway of life, may the ideals and principles for which you have been striving during your high school days serve as a guiding influence in the years that lie ahead. Today each one of you stands with sublime relation between the Past and the Future. The one is irrevocable: the other is unknown, Your life lies before you. Face it with steadfast courage and lofty pur- pose. And in the total passing when the bells toll in tribute to a life generously lived and a work nobly done, may all those with whom you have come in contact feel truly diminished because it tolls for thee. DONALD C DOLORES OLTMAN TURNER MARQUEZ Heaven gives its favourites -- early death. -- Byron CHILDE HAROLD CANTO IV ST. 102. lt has oftenbeen said that tragedy strikes in threes. How character- istically this prediction was manifested at South High School during the past school year, when a faculty member and two students died within a little more than three months in automobile accidents. These crashes killed Mlsgt. Donald C. Turner, ROTC instructor, on October 22g Elva Joan Oltman, sophomore, on January 14g and Dolores Marquez, senior, on January 27. To the memory of their lives and the quiet deeds which they so gen- erously performed while at South, we pause to do honor. May their spirits live on in the hearts and minds of the students and faculty of South High School, and may all those with whom they were associated in life cherish always the comradeship which was ended so abruptly when Death suc- ceeded them in answer to God's call to eternal peace and rest.
