H ? sec the past, present and future. We reflect on the past, enjoy the present and hope for the future. When this chapter of our lives is through. I'll Turn The Page and think of you. We arc the class of ’81. One, remember that number when times get tough and remember that we are always One In A Million. Now the times are fun and free, and thanks for the memories, You were never loo busy to see me. You would always Waste A Little Time On Mo. The time is over, graduation is near. So this is just a stepping stone in our lives. Take each step without hesitation or fear. So when the present is the past and the future is the present we hope that your memories have all been pleasant. Dana Vita toe and Rich Greene I Being Class President has meant a lot to me. I've enjoyed being the spokesperson for my senior class. To have to say good-bye gives me great pain. However, it must be said, Good-bye fellow classmates”. I remember you people and I've seen how we've grown from now back to the fall. The time we've spent together well, it was really grand. Sow it’s time to graduate and seek our happiness out across the land. Some classmates will go. some will stay. Most friendships will last, some will break. With all that ‘s said this school year is done and we're the class of '81. Ill see you in heaven my friends one and all. Remember those crazy times in the halls? Didn't we have a ball! And after all of our races have been run, we are still the class of 81. And all of our endeavors for success will be won. We'll show them we're the class with class.......81. The organization is based on scholarship, leadership, service and character. This year ive focused on service in particular to try to revive more student participation in the school. By-working together we were able to show school spirit by bringing clubs and groups together through various events. For example we decorated the courtyards at Christmas as a service to the whole school. It was an honor for me to In-President of National Honor Society. It has been the biggest liart of me during my senior year. I couldn't have asked for better members to overcome all the setbacks we had. I am grateful for all the dedication they put towards the organization. All in all. I believe this year's National Honor Society was the best ever I wish all of the members good luck in reaching their new goals. Historian). When I became a HEOCA Club member as a tenth grader it was a very important time for me. Even more important was the time I spent as the club's president. Over the past three years I have grown closer and closer to this club and it's outstanding members. Through many trying times we have stuck together and remained friends. Giving parties for children, visiting the elderly and taking part in various school activities were functions of the club that left each and every one of us with wonderful memories which will linger in our hearts forever. As far as South High clubs are concerned I truly believe that HEOGA is one of the best organized and function ing clubs that this school has to offer. It was a honor for me to serve os president and I wish all of the old and new members much success. There were times when things got tough and thought of leaving the club. But I always realized how much truly cared about HEOGA and what it stands for. Membership in HEOGA is something that makes you a very special person. However. .Membership should not he looked at in a conceited manner as if you think yourself better than another. But as a privilage. If you see your membership in that manner it will always make you happy. Good Luck to the past and present members. I he first paper was four pages long and appears less informative than today's paper Although the interests of the students seemed few. in actuality their interests were «|tiitc plentiful When sicwmg the old papers, their interests seemed to be W Wl and its effects, popularity, the opposite sex. jobs, sports, school plays, and ibeir alumni. In most cases, they reserved the last two pages for sports only In one issue, one whole page was reserved for the school colors “Blue ar J Cold Harper, Re The paper today teems to gne the impression that we ate interested in sports, popularity, the opposite sex. jobs, plays, and other school activities. 1 oday's paper has changed a lot according to the lirv years. My career, during this, my initial year, has been varied and interesting I could tell talcs of plunges into the depths of gloom and despair, of flights of elation above the clouds of disappointments and triumphs, all of which I have witnessed in my short existence. Great was my joy when I could offer my subscribers pages crammed full of real live news Bur when for some leason. I was declared not so good as usual . I was saddened I hen I tried harder than ever to justify myself. More interesting than any art gallery would be a collection of pictures registering the facial expressions that have met my unfolded pages There were some wondering yet delighted to find their names there, others made thoughtful by what they read, some finally ama cd and others somewhat disappointed. At first I was regarded at a somewhat doubtful enterprise but now I hold a place in the judgement of competent authorities, second only to the St dr oh Whether I have really lised up to my ideal, to he a torch, inspiring others on to greater endr or cannot be answeresi. bat I k: . that South wants me and I shall quietly shift to other hands next fall and strive harder than ever toward perfection.' And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep. How many loved your moments of glad grace. And loved your beauty with love false or true; But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face. And bending down beside the glowing bars. Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. —William Butler Yeats— TO THE PRESENT “Barter” Life has loveliness to sell. Are beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff. Soaring fire that sways and sings. And children’s faces looking up Holding wonder like a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold. Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold. And for your spirit’s still delight. Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness. Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. —Sara Teasdale “Burnt Norton ” Time present and time past And both perhaps present in time future, And time future contained in time past. If all time is eternally present All time is unredeemable. What might have been is an abstraction Remaining a perpetual possibility Only in a world of speculation. What might have been and what has been Point to one end, which is always present. Footfalls echo in the memory Down the passage which we did not take Towards the door we never opened Into the rose-garden. My words echo Thus, in your mind Time past and time future What might have been and what has been Point to one end; which is always present. —T.S. Eliot— Will Ever The Dear Day Come Back Again?” Will ever the dear day come back again, Those days of June, when lilacs were in bloom, And bluebirds sang their sonnets in the gloom Of leaves that roofed them in from sun or rain? I know not; but a presence will remain Forever and forever in this room, Formless, diffused in air; like a per fume,-A phantom of the heart, and not the brain Delicious days! When every spoken word Was like a footfall nearer and more near. And a mysterious knocking at the gate Of the hearts secret places, and we heart In the sweet tumult of delight and fear A voice that whispered, “Open, I cannot wait!” — author unknown— “The Fire of Driftwood” We sat and talked until the night, Descending, filled the little room; Our faces faded from the sight, Our voices only broke the gloom. We spake of many a vanished scene, Of once we thought and said, Of what had been, and might have been. And who was changed, and who was dead; And all that tills the hearts of friends, When they first feel, with secret pain. Their lives henceforth have separate ends, And never can he one again; The first slight swivering of the heart. That words are powerless to express, And leave it still unsaid in part, Or say it in too great excess. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow— — n INTO THE FUTURE! From “Choruses From the Rock All our knowledge brings us nearer to ignorance. All our ignorance brings us nearer to death Where is the life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? —T. S. Eliot— “My Lost Youth ” There are things of which I may not speak; There are dreams that cannot die; There are thoughts that make the strong heart weak, And bring a pallor into the cheek, And a mist before the eye And the works of that fatal song Come over me like a chill; “A hoy’s will is the wind’s will, And the thoughts of youth are long, long, thoughts. ” —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow— “I saw a man pursuing the horizon” I saw a man pursuing the horizon, Round and round they sped. I was distruded at this; I accosted the man. “It is futile, ” I said, “You can never• ” “You lie, ’’ he cried, And ran on. „ , —Stephen Crane— 100 You cannot make remembrance grow When it has lost its root The tightening the soil around And setting upright Deceives perhaps the universe But not retrieves the plant Real memory, like cedar felt! The Yearbook Staff would also like to express their deepest sympathy to Belinda Harper on the loss of her father. Freddie, who passed away suddenly during her senior year. — The Yearbook Staff 149 Denise Dorricott, a direct product of the Cleveland Public School system, has spent all but :l months of the last Id years at Fullerton Elementary School, A. R Hart Jr. High and South High School. Extremely active, Denise has participated in almost all extra-curricular activities. Writing articles and drawing cartoons for the Beacon, winning awards and money prizes for her art work and essay writing, as well as heading up many clubs and organizations has provided her with the versatility to produce this yearbook Being one half of this years staff, not only has Denise edited this book hut she has also done all of the art work, designed pages, wrote copy and headlines and proofread most of the hook. ISO hope that when you look through this book you will know and can appreciate how much work and effort we put forth to give you a yearbook. The “we in the previous sentence is Jill Calamante and I. Because, you see, we started off strong at the beginning of the year. Forty-one members strong. Is the months went on, our numbers dwindled. That was because only 2 of the original 41 members cared enough to keep it going. There were times when we did actually give up. Sometimes out of frustration. Other times out of fatigue. But, obviously, we always came back. Most times even more determined than before. Determined not only to give you a yearbook, but we did it for ourselves, too. I’m not saying 1 didn’t enjoy designing this book as a tribute to the class of '81 and South High School. I am extremely proud of our accomplishments and so if there is a certain section you don’t particularly enjoy... skip over it. What can 1 say? We did the best with what we had.
