Everything Must Change, . . . ’Cause That’s The Way Of Time, Nothing And No One Goes Unchanged 2 In these pages we are representing the change that South has gone through in 70 years. The oldest pictures are from 1908. On the first page arc pictures of South from 1908-1938, 1938-1968. In accordance with the theme we show how everyone and everything must change, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. We have survived through all of the problems of this year. 1978, and we will continue to perservere. Through all of the changes we have gone through and have yet to sec, the shining spirit of all South Flyers has pulled us through. . . . The Young Mysteries Become The Old, Do Unfold. 3 '7 . . . Never Much Too Soon, Cause Nothing And No One Goes, Unchanged . . . i To keep up with changing times, courses at South have had to change also. Besides the basic college prep courses, wc now have classes such as food service, horticulture, computer management. etc. These courses have kept up with the demand for the more diversified life-style that wc have to deal with today. Washington seem so appropriate: “I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” May the knowledge and experience you have gained bring you the success that you so well deserve. H. J. Turczyk Principal 15 AUTOGRAPHS My name is Kevin Howard, one of the tri-captains of the South High football team. The experience of being a captain was a rewarding and fulfilling job. I worked with great guys, striving for a goal. A goal of winning that can't be matched. Our coach, Mr. Oblak, instilled in us that in football and in life you don't have to be forced to give 100 percent. You must give it from your heart so that way it is pure. By doing this, you satisfy one person and that person is yourself. I will miss the running, sweating, agony and complications of football. It was well worth it. and I will remember it alwavs. Top row: R. Scncff. k Rabanl. E. Galka, R. Goldsworth. C. Glover. W. Voyten. W. Allen: Mr. K. Oblak. Coach. 4th row: Mr. G. Grccnc. These past few years have been filled with tears of joy and sadness and many memorable moments. During these years, I have learned to take defeat with pride, to take winning graciously; but, most of all, to be myself. Many hours of work and devotion arc dedicated to this club, but the work is forgotten and only the satisfaction of knowing the job is done remains. As my final year of chccrlcading draws to a close, I leave behind only the best wishes to all those fortunate enough to be able to share their future years in such an experience. To those in the following years. I only hope that they wear their uniform with as much pride and honor as I have. tlrtl. !- lonmr i iiirli.'f Being A Flycrctte Being a Flycretle is the most satisfying experience you can feel in high school. Having the opportunity to portray your talents: high kicks, coordination, leadership and smiling in front of all your friends is more rewarding than most imagine. All of the routines, practices, crying, laughing, sweat, disagreements, sore muscles, butterflies and heart pounding thrills could never be relived or taken out of my memory. I hope that the tradition of the Flyer-ettes lives on so those few lucky girls can Time moves on, never stopping for one moment. When I look back at the memories I had as a South High majorette, I realize it means more than just having the ability to twirl. Courage is one important factor a girl must have in order to try out. After accomplishing her goal, she must contribute her ideas. This is a quality that has to be outstanding in order to make a team work. The dedicated hours of practice, the humility of initiation, the long, cold football games, the sick feeling you get right before performing makes you sometimes wonder if it is worthwhile. It sure is! If I had to do it all over again, 1 would do it with few regrets. Remember, success is failure turned inside out. With all this in mind, a majorette can hold her head up high and be proud of what she has accomplished and cherish each memory. If HACK BOY’S TRACK vey HARVEY From Frank Fay to James Stewart, El wood l Dowd has delighted audicnccd around the world for three decades. Elwood is one reason that Mary Chase's comedy HARVEY has been termed an American classic. As the hilarious plot unwind's, F.lwood’s sister, Veta Simmons, and her daughter. Myrtle Mac, have a problem. F.lwood's invisible pal Harvey. Having determined that there is only one solution, Veta sets out to have Elwood (and Harvey) committed to Chumley’s Rest, the local loonybin. What ensues is mass confusion as it becomes unclear just who is loony and who is not. In total command of the entire situation is Harvey. But who is I lar-VVHAT is Harvey? Is Elwood seeing things? Is Veta imagining things? Will the orderly Wilson capture Myrtle's heart? Will Myrtle finally get a man? The answers to these and many other questions are skillfully woven together by Miss Chase, making the saga of Elwood and Harvey a delightful experience. — Mary Myers POET’S CORNER Spectrum of Projection day springs into nitc the projection of the future is now. we have only our dreams to consider and pregnant with euphoric desires to be what will the storms bring after the calm and what will the seasons sparkle into besides years We wear the mask that grins and lies. It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes. This debt we pay to human guile;: With torn and bleeding hearts we smile. And mouth with myriad subtleties. — Paul Laurence Dunbar how can it all be commanded what we are and why and who’s to say what we consider ours if not us we will become the small towns and the masses in the cities and the will of our dreams shall become the predestinations of our children yet the clouds will always move and the shifting of the sky will always be at hand and yet who arc we with our dreams, and desires and possessions but specs of foam on an open sea with nothing to do but dream Judec D igicI MEMORIES Farewell, love, and all ihv laws for ever. Thy baited hooks shall tangle me no more: Scncc and Plato call me from thy lore To perfect wealth, my with for to endeavor. In blind error when I did persever. T hy sharp repulse that prickcth aye so sore Hath taught me to set in trifles no store. And scape forth, since liberty is lever. Therefore, farewell! Go trouble younger hearts. And in me claim no more authority With idle outh go use thy property. And thereon spend thy many brittle darts. For hitherto though I have lost my time. Me lusteth no longer rotten boughs to climb. Memories are made of things That happen every day Moments as we live them Things we do or say. Little bits and pieces Of laughter mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years. The carefree days of childhood The growing pains of youth A few illusions shattered In the endless search for truth. The friendships we remember Mistakes that we regret The ending of a love affair We never could forget. I sing the Body Electric: 1'he armies of those I love engirth me. and I engirth them; They will not let me off till I go with them, icspond to them. And discorrupt them. And charge them full with the charge of the Soul. Walt Whitman Yes, memories arc happenings Each one a different kind Each one a separate chapter That is printed on the mind. We can't erase the sadness Or edit out the tears We can't undo the wrongs we've done We can’t relive the years But since memories keep building Each day can be a start Of making new and Happy ones To store within the heart. We have represented almost all of the students to the point that some other activities have little or no coverage. When you do look through this book, some twenty years hence, remember how we all got through this past ever changing year. This book is smooth and should impress you with the even flow of the school years and how they should have been. The changes of this year are in tunc with the theme of the book. o one and nothing is immune to the changes. The memories of this school that I have are many and varied. My opinions, as well as yours have changed as the year has gone by. But uppermost in them all is the memorj of just being a Flyer, participating in the activities of a great school. I hope we all can cherish these memories and hold them dear to our hearts. Us Here 146 . . . And Hummingbirds Do Fly . . . And South Flyers Reach For The Sky. ADASKA. Lisa Michelle ALLEN.
