Our Senate Champs Paced by the deadly accuracy of our first string, the Flyers made our senior year The Best by walking off with the West Senate trophy. Starting the season off with a royal bang, the South High Flyers defeated Holy Name, Marshall, and West High. South made its mid-season schedule a success by downing West Tech and Rhodes. With a victory over Lincoln the Wolanski men won their twelfth consecutive game and clinched the West Senate Crown. By using a pressing defense and an uncanny ability to score on their long shots, the Saint Ignatius Wild Cats upset the Flyers by the narrowest of margins. 63 to 62 By romping past their independent opponents, combined with their senate victories, the team entered the post season playoffs as a favorite. The 1954 and 1955 seniors will never forget Leroy Collins, Bob Brown, Jack Pro-chaska. Herb I.iedtke, Jim Zehnal, John Kuska, Walter Szczesny, Dave Stoctzncr, Bob F.delberg. Jim Dutka, Joe Waler, and Ronald Kontura when they appeared in their bright orange warm-up suits contrasted with their brush haircuts. Wc will never forget the hours we sweated waiting for the sound of the buzzer and the feeling of pride for our team. It is therefore fitting that we should here honor the team that has helped to bring our senior year to a perfect close. No tribute is more appropriate than Coach Gene Wolanskis to the team: Their desire to excel by means of physical conditioning was truly outstanding and no other South team during my years was in better physical shape.
