CLASS DIARY Dear Diary. As we. the June ‘49 class, recall the three years we spent at South High, we remember many unforgettable and memorable incidents in which our class participated. Here, in our class diary, we have written some of the most important incidents so that in future years we may still remember them. SEPTEMBER. 1946 Early this month 263 of us entered South High School. This was a month we shall never forget. We were all slightly nervous (even lnghtened), especially when we had such difficulty trying to find our various classrooms Later in the month we received our first issue of the South High Beacon. By then we were more accustomed to our daily routines. Biology, geometry, and world history were new to us. but we were slowly getting used to them. A girl from our class was head majorette this year. OCTOBER. 1946 Student leaders introduced to us the various clubs and organizations of the school. A few of us had already joined some of the clubs .and the remainder were now looking forward to joining them. NOVEMBER. 1946 This was a month we shall always remember. South won its first football game in three years! We defeated Ignatius 3-0. There was a dance in the evening after the game The football queen, who was crowned at the game, reigned at this dance. South Jay Vees won the Junior Football Championship of Cleveland by defeating the St. Ignatius grid-ders 18-6. Twelve boys from our class belonged to this championship team. DECEMBER. 1946 One member of our class was placed on the varsity basketball team, which had won all its games up to date. JANUARY. 1947 The annual band concert was held this month. Ten members of our class participated in this concert. The new band uniforms, which were bought with tax stamps, were displayed for the first time. FEBRUARY. 1947 Oh, happy day! This month we became lOA's In one semester our class of ex-flats had been reduced to 252 members. MARCH. 1947 This was the most exciting month we had ever experienced Our basketball team won the city championship from East High, 36-34. Two more boys from our class were promoted to the varsity team for this game. APRIL 1947 Baseball season started this month. A few boys in our class were on the team. The annual spring play was given. This year the play was Nothing But the Truth. MAY. 1947 The tax stamp King and Queen were crowned. The Queen was a girl from our class. The baseball team was tied with St. Ignatius for first place in the west senate race. JUNE. 1947 The baseball team played for the city championship but lost to Benedictine 6-0. Another semester had drawn to a close and we were all looking forward to our summer vacation. » • SEPTEMBER. 1947 A new semester had begun and we were now llB's. We had again been reduced in number; there were now 210 of us. Our class played an important part in the 1947 football season. Many of our boys were on the football team; ten 11B girls were Majorettes; and ten members of our class were in the band. OCTOBER. 1947 This month South played its first night game. They also won two games, defeating Ignatius 20-19, and smashing Marshall 31-6. NOVEMBER. 1947 The annual operetta was given this month. Our class was well represented in Robin-hood. DECEMBER. 1947 Basketball season officially opened. The majority of the team were boys in our class. Page 24

CLASS DIARY (Continued) JANUARY. 1948 This was the first uneventful month we had had since coming to South. FEBRUARY. 1948 Again we were promoted; we were now 11 A s. This month a boy in our class won the Welterweight Novice Title in the Golden Gloves Tournament. MARCH. 1948 A Mike and Script Club was formed at South, largely through the efforts of members of our class. Our band marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown. APRIL. 1948 The annual band concert and spring play were given this month. A girl in our class had a major part in “Dear Ruth. MAY. 1948 Nine members of our class were inducted into the National Honor Society. Open house was also held this month. JUNE. 1948 We are sorry to say our class was neglected this month since the graduating seniors were in the limelight. However, we were all eagerly looking forward to our summer vacations. SEPTEMBER. 1948 The day we had long awaited finally arrived. Now we were seniors! Four girls in our class were on the Beacon Staff; eight boys were on the football team; and ten girls belonged to the Majorette Club which were now wearing white satin skirts. OCTOBER. 1948 The Flyers made a fine start in the current football season. In their first Senate game, they tied with Lincoln 13-13. Then, in the next game, they defeated Ignatius 33-13. NOVEMBER. 1948 This was a month of victories for South. We regained the Pig Iron from Holy Name, and won the remainder of our senate games. To celebrate these victories, the Student Council sponsored a football frolic in the school gym. The dance was so successful that the balcony had to be opened for dancing. After this came the greatest game of all. the Charity game. Representing the west senate. South played against Benedictine, the east senate champs. Although we were defeated 6-0, South is still proud of its championship team. Another championship was won by the Jay Vees. For the third consecutive time, the Jay Vees won the football championship. DECEMBER. 1948 This month we held our class elections and organized our various committees The first social event for the class was the 12B-12A Social which turned out to be a great success. JANUARY. 1949 The National Honor Society held its induction ceremony this month. Seven 12B's were inducted. In the annual 12B-12A games, the 12B boys defeated the 12A boys, but the 12B girls were defeated by the 12A girls. FEBRUARY. 1949 A new semester began—our last semester for we were now 12As. The new Beacon staff was composed entirely of 12A's. An F. T. A Club was formed here and several members of our class joined The basketball team played in the Arena against Lincoln for consolation honors but was defeated. MARCH. 1949 This month we took the Ohio State Psychological Test—and what a test! The 12A Social was also held this month. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time. APRIL. 1949 The Spring Play. 'Charley's Aunt was given. Six members of our class had major roles. Nine members of our class were inducted into the National Honor Society. The 12B-12A Social was also held this month. MAY. 1949 Friday the thirteenth was a day we shall never forget. It was not an unlucky day either; for it was Prom Night at the beautiful Lakeshore Country Club. JUNE. 1949 Senior Day and Commencement marked the climax of our high school career. On June 14 our class, numbering 162, graduated from South High School. Page 25
