19 • SOUTHERN AI RK • 37 Baseball SOUTH High School has had a softball team in the Senate I-cague for the past two seasons. Although the players receive no recognition for their conscientious efforts they came through with top honors in the two years of competition. The squad’s roster includes these outgoing seniors: John Meczka, who held down the first base position in great style; Ed Racinowski, who was noted for his sterling play at the hot corners, and Robert Huxtahlc, who pitched the team to a 7 to 3 one-hit victory over Glenvillc in the final game of the season. Track ALTHOUGH South has never produced a winning track team they have worked hard to produce one. Hank” Siekuniec, our one-man track team, ran the 220-yard dash, 100-yard dash, and 880-yard relay. He was a shot putter and a high jumper and certainly will be missed this spring when candidates are called out for track. Another senior is little blond Joseph Le Chaix, known as Bud.” who was one of the two star low hurdlers and the colorific anchor man on the lightweight relay, which did not lose a race in 1935. Wrestling WRESTLING seems to be the sport in which South always has a good team. South is known for its good wrestlers turned out by Coach Ray T. Kraft. Last year South's grapplers won the Greater Cleveland Wrestling Championship and placed four men on the city Championship team. Many city chumps have been turned out in South’s gym in the past and many medals were won. Among the senior grunters are: Hank” Dombrowski, wild man of the mat, and James Terwilliger, who have won their letters last season. Others, Henry Stobbe and James Piwonka, have been on the squad although failing to achieve enough points to merit a letter. Basketball WITH a disastrous football season hidden away in the past. South turns to its hardwood quintet with expectations of a great season. Coach John E. Shallcross, with plenty of veterans and a fair amount of reserve material, has a right to expect a winning team. In previous years, South has always been in the running and has won several Senate Championships. This season, the fivers started off with a bang by downing John Adams in the opening game, 36 to 25. On December II, South entertained Garfield Heights with a 30 to 15 trouncing. On December 17, West Tech was South’s adversary and led by captain Norb Mcndrzycki, right forward, the flyers came out victorious by the score of 32 to 23. Mcndrzycki is known for his aggressiveness and his ability to break up opponents’ pass work. Hank” Siekaniec, a tall rangy boy, is probably the most outstanding athlete. He has merited six letters and is now earning his seventh holding down the center position on the quintet. Besides Mcndrzycki and Siekaniec the following cagers have played on the hardwood for South: Ed Racinowski, John Meczka, Joseph Le Chaix, and Robert Huxtablc. 29

Football SOUTH HIGH’S 1985 and 1986 football teams proved unsuccessful ones due to some unknown reason. Winning but two games in the two years of play tlie teams ended up in the cellar position both seasons. Although South hasn’t had a superior team in the last two years, previous to this time we have had some outstanding squads. In 1933 South won the City Championship as well as the Senate Championship by defeating Shaker Heights in a blood curdling encounter at the Stadium which ended with the score South 7. Shaker 0. Also, in 1928 South won the Senate Championship by going through the season with a perfect slate. South’s elevens are generally considered plenty tough opposition for any of its opponents. Among the seniors on the squad are Norbcrt Mendrzvcki. who generated the team from his quarterback position. He was known for his smartness on the gridiron and his ball toting ability. Henry Sieknneic, halfback and fullback who did most of the running and punting, was one of the mainstays of the team. Rudy Merrick, although small of stature, held down the running guard berth and proved to be a thorn to the opposing teams by his outstanding ability to smash up trick plays. Other seniors graduating who will be missed when next season rolls uround are-Hugo Ankowski. John Meczka. Roy Kobcrna. Kd Racinowski. Richard Protiva. Fred Zhun, Robert Iluxtable, Chester Kryzan. Joseph I.c Chaix. and Clarence Masters. 28

Second lime—James Vnjgel, Tr«l Srislo, Richard Prntlva, Norman Kahnik, Kenneth Waldeck. Orchestra BESIDES producing several concerts and playing in our school programs. our excellent orchestra still finds time to win awards in city-wide contests. Expert direction by our youthful director. Mr. Gould, combined with natural playing ability of our musicians, has made South High’s Orchestra one which we should remember. Band I'I' took a long time before South High finally achieved the goal of having Hand uniforms, but now with those flashy black and orange uniforms, we have a hand that we are proud to show olT before any school in the city. Marching down the football field in unerring step our band injects both color and spirit into many an otherwise dull game. 30
