As Juniors we were in charge of the Junior and Senior Prom, which was held at the Masonic Auditorium. The Juniors were attired in their class colors, pink and black. The waiters and waitress were excellent in their performances, The music was superbly presented by the Mello tones of Tuskegee, Alabama. Our sponsors were Mrs. E. M. Stephens, and Mrs. G. S. Mitchell. Now, we come to the fourth and greatest year in the history of the Class. We automatically became Seniors in September. With the gaining of this title, we began to take ourselves more seriously than ever before. As this year comes to close we are getting positively dizzy with dignity. Our sponsors are Mrs, E. M. Stephens and Mrs. B. S. Merriweather. The organization of the Senior Class was noteworthy, the follow- ing list of officers being in charge: President, Nathanial Obleton, Vice President, James Redd, Recording Secretary, Charlie Mae Sum- bry, Corresponding Secretary, Doretha Brewer, Financial Secretary, Mary Smith, Treasurer, Lamar Lockhart, Business Managers, Otis Abron and Carl Obleton, Sgt. -at-Arms, Roy Chester Sanks, and Chaplain, Leola Mitchell. During the period from 1957, to 1961, many great talents were discovered. There are musicians, dancers, singers, orators, and a host of others being in various categories. For instance, Mary Nell Smith has been a news commentator since her Freshman Year. Annie Dorthy Freeman was head majorette during our junior and senior Year. Our Senior football players were, Cari Obleton, Roy Chester Sanks, Anderson Chappell, Otis Abron, Bill Cook, and Robert Abercrombie. There were several Seniors who were Majorettes. They were, Theresa Davis, Doretha Brewer, Mary Nell Smith, Virginia Smith, and Annie Dorthy Freeman. Frank Nelson, Chester Sumbry and Tommy Henry, were in the band. The five additions to the Senior Class, took their roots as if they had been planted with the class which began in 1957. The new addi- tions are: Otis Abron, James Caruthers, Kary Word, Howard Williams, and Mary Mossmon. The Senior basketball players are Howard Williams and Robert Abercrombie. Our cheerleaders were: Nadine Richardson and Gladys Griffin. As the old saying goes, If you can't be the best, be among the best, and we as a whole can say we were among the best by having Nadine Richardson as an attendant in the Miss Blue Streak epithet during our Senior year.

611155 flisfrfry By: Charlie Mae Sumbry The discovery of the Class of 1961 It was only four years ago, September 8, 1957, our class entered the corridors of South Girard High School its Freshman year, a band of eager restless youth, seeking for more wisdom and knowledge: but re- cognized the creed that started, the road of learning is rough. As we strolled down the corridors we observed the pleasant and understanding forces of teachers chattering about their vacation and wondering if there would be any changes in the school building, faculty members or students. Suddenly, they caught a glimpse of new faces, a group of neatly dressed boys and girls, reasonably good looking and frightened. Each possessing aptitudes and talents worth finding out. At this moment, we were made welcome and became the class of 1961. During our Freshman year our home room sponsors were: Mrs. M. A. Morris and Mrs. H. M. Richmond, who were very helpful and always willing to help us to become adjusted to this great institution. Our Freshman year was quite complicated and confusing because we had to get adjusted to the new rules and standards. With the coming of the next September, we received a new name. Because of our skills in acquiring the customs of the school, we were renamed Sophomores. During this year we welcomed new citizens and also a new sponsor. Mrs. G. S. Mitchell was warmly welcomed as home room sponsor of 10th grade, section Il. Mrs. E. M. Stephens sponsor of 10th Grade, section I, and Mrs. A. Lowe sponsor of 10th grade, section III. There were a total of 83 students enrolled in the sophomore class. We greeted the smiling faces of students from Phenix City Junior High School. They were: Connie Lynn, Nadine Richardson, Annie Freeman, Doretha Brewer, Margie Nelson, Betty Scott, Gloria Jones, Gladys Griffin, Lamar Lockhart, Frank Nelson, Nathanial Obel- ton, Bill Cook, Eddie Smith, Charlie Nelson, Carl Obleton, Johne Lockhart, and Thomas Cook. In the third year, owing to an old educational custom the soph- omores became juniors. We were well accustomed to our wonder- ful environment.

We were represented among the best again when Chester Sumbry won second prize on Talent Hunt , which was held at the Spencer Senior High School Auditorium, this was during our Junior Year. The end of the four year period is drawing near and as our motto states: We have crossed the bay, but the ocean lies ahead. We take the opportunity to say now, that in our far from humble opinion the Class of 1961, is the most brilliant, attractive, and talen ted of any class known to history and will be always remembered by the faculty of the South Girard High School and the people of the community as That wonderful class of 1961.
