CLASS HISTORY SUMMER 53 On September l7 1950 we who gradu ate ln Iune of 1953 took a brg step when we entered South Gate I-hgh School We found here a drfferent atmosphere from the now far removed 1un1or h1gh school envrron ment We were welcomed 1nto the Audrtor rum by student body offrcers and brrefed on what was expected of us Among the homeroom teachers we met was our future Sen1or sponsor Mr Brchard Gardner Our other homeroom teachers also proved frrendly and understandrng and deserve our thanks at graduat1on Mr Barnes Mr Beckett Mr Couch Mr Dobson Mr Eng l1sh Mr Gerson Mr Mayfleld Mr Schroe der Mrs Tucker Mrss W1lk1nson and Mrss Woolley Through therr gu1dance and the efforts of the remarnder of South Gates faculty we settled down to Work and to learn as well as to grow socrally more mature After two years of hard work comblned W1th fun and emoyment we former lower classmen had reached our Sen1or year Sen1or GCl1V1l1GS were started by the elec t1on of Bee offrcers Pres1dent Bruce Felt V1cePres1dent Bob Aston Secretary Lau ra Whrsler Treasurers Ioy T1psword and Iohnny Gatt1 W1th the arrrval of Sen1or rrngs wh1ch we had ordered as A ll s and the Sen1or sweaters l1ght blue 1n color wrth a Navy blue emblem We prepared for Becogn1t1on Day at the Park We outnumbered the graduatrng Sen1or Ayes and managed to obtaln our fa1r share of the refreshments The more ambrtrous upheld our honor 1n football sw1mm1ng and other games Shortly afterwards Sen1or Aye offrcers were Chosen Presxdent hm Godbey V1ce Presrdent Drck Berreman Secretary Ar lene Mclver Ioy T1psword and Iohnny Gattr treasurers served for the full year Dues were pard and w1th our Sen1or Card came the real1zat1on that we were A l2 s at last The real1zat1on was empha s1zed aga1n when most of us and our par ents attended one of the best planned and rnost successful Sen1or Teas ever held on March 25 1n the cafeterra On Aprrl 21 came Sen1or Recognltlon also at the Park and l1ke 1ts predecessor a success On May 5 we revrved the old trad1t1on of a Sen1or Play and were proud of the success of Nothlng But the Truth We hope that rt has paved the way to pre sentatron of Sen1or plays for the years to come and would l1ke to thank Mr Barreca for hrs help and Cathy Messrna for f1ne drrectlon The most 1mportant dance of our three years the Sen1or Prom came on Iune 6 and was held at the South Gate CIVIC Aud1tor1um Theme for the dance and decoratrons was Dancrng 1n the Deep and we left wrth some unforgettable Iune memorres And then 1t was the Sen1or Breakfast Iune 10 wh1ch clalmed our attentlon After a hearty breakfast and some frne entertarn ment a tree and plaque were presented to the school At the Iune l5 Award Assembly out standrng students of our class were named members of the Ephebran Soc1ety and out standrng athletes and scholars were hon ored The Bna1 Br1th Awards were pre- sented to the outstand1ng boy and g1rl of our class and the Krwanrs scholarshxp was awarded to one of the l953 graduates February or Iune Baccalaureate on Sunday lune 14 and Commencement on Frrday lune 19 brought the real1zat1on that school had completed one drstmct phase of our hves no matter wht our plans on future educatron or an rmmedlate 1ob Lookrng back over three happy years we ll always remember the football games and Mrlk Bowl appearances the baseball games track meets gymnastrc meets and basketball the Howdy Hop and the other Sport Nrght act1v1t1es and dances the BAMBLEB and RAMBLEBACK the assem bl1es Knrghts plays Thespran presenta trons and school plays such as Seven teenth Summer and Wrsh on the Moon Mus1c programs l1ke Cole Porter on Parade And who could forget Cotton Day Grrls League and Boys l:'ederat1on act1v1 tres the many clubs and honor organrza t1ons M1dal1an noon GCl1V1t1GS and the many frrends we made and many thrngs we learned both 1n class and extracurncu lar GCl1Vll1GS Thanks for a splendrd and wonderful V1S1l South Gate We ll never forget 1t and we hope you ll never forget our class I I ll 1 II '- 1 I ' - ' 1 ' l I I 1 1 1 . . . 1 .
