The cleanup drive put into effect by the Dukes became famous and really got results. Staying after school for half the time necessary for the custodians to clean up the campus didn't aDDeal to the students, and the drive really helped South Gate's school grounds to look good. Noon movies, cartoons and short subjects presented by the Dukes helped finance the purchase of a loud speaker system for the campus. The Hi-Y Garden Ball, held May 16, was one of the most elaborate dances of the year, its profits also going toward the loud speaker. The two local tallies came after two daz- zling runs by all league halfback Ralph Long of 75 and 61 yards, respectively. After recovering from the Bulldog fracas the Ramblers again were picked favorites over a supposedly weak Bell eleven, ln the ensuing struggle the Eagles tripped the Rams' cart by a nar- row 7-6 margin when Rod Lauter picked Long's boble out of the air and traveled 74 yards to pay dirt. The con- version broke a 6-6 tie, giving the Eagles another victory over the South Cate eleven. The third blow landed on the red helmets was dealt by the Orange and Gray Huntington Spark Spartans. A l9 to 6 decision was handed the locals by the Eastern League Champs, com- pletely putting the Ramblers out of any League posts. The Lone Ram touchdown came when Bob Bray re- covered a Spartan bobble and Ralph Long packed it into pay dirt from six yards out. The local eleven took a rest as they walloped Muir l.C. 40 to 6 in a lop- sided contest on Hurd Field. The Ram eleven looked good as they tried a series of new plays that had the de- fenders completely baffled. Lloyd Mc- Collum led the scoring with two treks to the end zone, but the best run of the game was third string Cliff Car- penter's 4l yard jaunt through the whole Muir Tech team, thrilling his girl, who was in the stands. lt kas hard to tell whether Carpenter or Coach Hastings was the most surprised. The following week the Rams squared off with jordan for the cellar spot. The nightmare fracas ended in a deadlock, tying the two teams for fourth place. The Rambees wound up with two wins, one tie, and four losses, two of which were in practice competition. In the first game of the season, the Compton Tartars went wild with a fine passing attack to pin a l9-O loss on the bewildered Ramblers. South Gate featured sloppy play throughout the contest. The second game, a practice en- counter. saw the Mighty Midgets lose a close contest, 7-6, to their host, the Washington Generals. South C-ate made the first score in this fracas when Harley Smith blocked and fell on a Washington punt in the end zone. Washington scored on a 25 yard pass. South Cate won their first league game, i2-O, from the Garfield Bull- dogs. Bob Robinson scored one touch- down and passed to Specks Christian- sen for the other. johnny Westergard, tackle, stood out with a 78 yard run- back of an intercepted pass. Bell handed South Gate another de- feat, i3-7. A pass from Paul Halopoff to Bob Robinson late in the game gave South Gate its only score. The Ram- blers tied the Huntington Park Spar- tans, 6-6, in their fifth game. Bob Rundell scored for the Bees from the five yard line, but couldn't kick the conversion. Against Riis, the Ramblers rolled, 20-O. Paul Halopoff scored one touch- down and passed to lim Parker for an- other. A pass to Ray Thornton culmi- nated the scoring. ln the last game of the season, South Crate met the jordan Bulldogs. A win would have meant championship tie, a loss, a fourth place spot. After dropping all but one of their practice tilts, which was won in an overtime period, the Rambler Varsity started into league competition. South Gate won its first game by downing the Bell Eagles, 34-27, after building up a 24-6 halftime lead and coasting in from there. Stu Dollinger led the scoring parade with 19 points. The Ramblers had their easiest foe in the Riis Vikings. The Vikings fell, 33-19. Dollinger cleaned up for 12 digits in this outing. The Garfield Bulldogs put up stiff competition in the Ramblers' third game, but finally fell, after building up an 8-1 early first quarter lead, 35- 31. Dollinger garnered 15 counters, although the losers' lim Nelson made 18. The first league defeat was handed to Ramville by the jordan Bulldogs. With the score tied at 3-31, with just one minute to go, the winners sunk two baskets to win, 35-31. Huntington Park provided a thrill- ing contest for South Gate spectators, but lost in the final two minutes, 33- 29, The Spartans had a 25-25 tie with the Rams with the time growing short, but couldn't hang on to it. Bell won the second game from the Ramblers, also in the final minute, 31 - 29. Don Guynn scored 12 points al- though the winners' Charles Faught scored 19. Riis fell, 54-35, after the Ramblers got back on their feet following a three game slump which included two losses. Don Guynn was again Rambler high point man with 16. Garfield proved a stubborn foe again, but South Gate dropped them in a tightly played game, 26-22. Guynn rang up 1O markers in this tilt. South Gate's title hopes went flying high when they bounced back to trounce the lordan quintet, 39-27. Guynn garnered 9, Dollinger, 7. The Huntington Park Spartans fell by a record score in the final game of the season, 57-36, to end Spartans' eight year championship streak and sew up the pennant for the Ramblers. Stu Dollinger scored 19 points this time, while George Pope scored 10, and Paul Griffin, 9. Stu Dollinger and Don Guynn were chosen first string All-League, and Dollinger third string All-City. Stu was high point man for the season with 109, and Don was runnerup with 89. Coach Garner's Bee squad was good during the 1946-47 season, and turned in some fine performances. The midgets lost two games to an excell- ent, undefeated, championship Gar- field squad, split a pair with the Bell Eagles, and downed every other foe to wind up with a second place tie in the final Eastern League standings. ln the first game, South Gate de- feated Bell, 2O-18, when the time limit of 55 minutes ran out. Time outs and too many fouls caused this to happen. The next victory was over the weak Riis Vikings, who fell, 29-7. lt was a build-up for a letdown, however, as 1541 the Ramblers lost the very next game, 35-15, to the Garfield five. The most exciting game of the year for either the Varsity or Bee teams was the narrow 26-25 victory for South Gate over jordan. A skin tight game from start to end, the score stood tied at 25-25 when the final wihstle blew. The overtime period which followed was nearly a riot, and a foul on Cill Ditto of the Rams gave him a free shot, which he made good to win the game. The next two games brought a win and a loss, respectively, to the Ram- bees. Leading all the way, South Gate scored a 26-20 victory over the Hunt- ington Park Spartans, only to take a 33-2O defeat at the hands of the Bell quintet in their rematch. Another win and loss come in the Riis and Garfield tangles, respectively. Riis fell, 39-12, and the Bulldogs from Garfield had a tough time down- ing the Ramblers, 31-26. The jordan-South Gate fray was an- other close affair, the Rams winning again, 35-32. ln the finale of the season, South Gate won a one-sided victory over the Huntington Park Spartans again, this time, 33-22, Coach Gus Gerson's Cee and Dee basketball teams had very little luck in the 1946-47 season. Both teams were with very little talent, and most of the boys were pretty green. The Cees won only one game all Seagon long, and the Dees did a little better, winning three, All in all, however, most of the players were underclass- men and learned a lot of basketball to help them in their future casaba ga- reers. The lineup for the season was changed from time to time, but mostly it was Ewel Grossberg, first singles, Clayton Fowler, second singles, Tom Byron, who, by the way, never lost a match in two years of competition, third singlesg Stu Dollinger, fourth singles, and Don Chase, fifth singles. The doubles lineups were as fol- lows: the first doubles were Howard Maltby and Perry Paul lwhen they weren't fightingl, and the second doubles were Ray Pearson and Don Griffin. Q Dolllnger one of net team's most colorful players 5 U 1 - Tom Byron has lost no singles match in two years' competition. 1 G.A.A. is the Girls Athletic Association of South Gate high school.
