Nothing useless is, or lowg Each thing in its place is best: And what seems but idle show Strengthens and supports the rest. For the structure that we raise, Time is with materials filled Our todays and yesterdays Are the blocks with which we build Q 3 Truly shape and fashion these: Leave no yawning gaps between: Think not, because no man sees, Such things will remain unseen. In the elder days of Art, Builders wrought with greatest care Each minute and unseen part: For the Gods see everywhere. BUILDERS Let us do our work as well, Both the unseen and the seen: Make the house, where Gods may dwell Beautiful, entire, and clean. Else our lives are incomplete, Standing in these walls of Time, Broken stairways where the feet Stumble as they seek to climb. Build today, then, strong and sure, With a firm and ample base: And ascending and secure Shall tomorrow find its place. Thus alone can we attain To those turrets, where the eye Sees the world as one vast plain, And one boundless reach of sky. Henry W. You are about to enter a very complicated civilization. A little knowledge or understanding of it is not enough. Your watch-word should be pre- pare, prepare, prepare. The really successful leaders in our country are the people who have prepared themselves IN ADVANCE, and were ready to take over when the opportunity arose. Life is an on-going process. Everything, all the time, is changing. Nothing stands still. Hence, one is really never prepared but is al- ways preparing and becoming. The perpetual movement on to something new, changed, and different is the essence of happy living. And so it is, Onward South Cate Graduates, On- ward to Success. VARSITY MEN TAKE SECOND PLACE A very impressive season was pre- sented the student body by the varsity pigskinners, as they went through an unblemished schedule with the ex- ception of the Bell Eagles who liter- ally walked over our boys. A win over the birds would have given the cham- pionship to South Cate. Starting with the first game on the schedule the Rams showed they were going places as they swamped a heav- ily favored Washington outfit l2-O, holding the Generals to minus yardage. The Gaters scored early in the second quarter and held that 6-O lead until the last frame when Dick Caulden, All City center, picked off an enemy pass and went into the promised land to make the count l2-O and the ball game for South C-ate. An exceptional- ly good turn out came to Washington. The first league game saw the Rams still going strong as they stalled a highly touted jordan Bulldog team to 1 the tune of l4-O. Bob Mann starred in this tilt with the most yardage gained in the backfield to his credit. Next came Garfield who scored the first touchdown off the local aggrega- tion. The Bulldogs scored the first marker of the game and went out in front 6-O. The Ramblers came back however in the last minute of the first Y Tom Eads, Right End i521 half as lack Gibilisco fired a long aerial to end Ted Simpson for a score. The Ramblers scored midway in the second half to take the lead and stay there. This game was one of the most exciting games of the year. saddest day at Ramville in a long time lthe scene was at Belll. The Eagles tromped all over the Rams hopes of a championship season by the score of 20-O, the largest score Ramland had been beaten by in over three years. The following week Huntington Park put the Ramblin' Rams back on their winning ways, as they fell l4-O to the powerful South Cate men, in a game that should have been 25 to O. Don Hitchman starred in this encoun- Ter. ln the finale of the season, Neil Campbell topped off the scoring for the season with a long 70 yard jaunt to pay dirt and gave the Ramblers a 25-O decision over the Riis Vikings. T v A ,g - nf IA' xl! BEE'S SNATCH SECOND With the lordan Bees going through an undefeated season and being scored upon only once, that being by the South Cate Bees, the Rambees took second place, with only one win, two ties, and one loss. The Ramville midgets first game was with the Bulldogs and they were downed 20-6, although they outplayed the boys from Watts throughout the game. Making l4 first downs to their opponents 3 and being far ahead in net yardage, they still came out on the short end of the score, because of an intercepted pass made by jordan good for 93 yards and a touchdown, a run back of a kick for 57 yards and an- other touchdown, and a 67 yard TD jaunt on the first play of the game by the Bulldogs. The next game was with the Bull- dogs from Garfield. The mighty mid- gets won this one easily, 6-O, but the score might have been 24-0 with a little luck. Making IO first downs to their opponents one and holding the Bulldogs to Sl yards from scrimmage, while making 204, our Rambees had drives stopped on the 5, ll, and 20 yard lines. jim Parker was a standout in this game. The Eagles of Bell were next on the list of the midgets, This was the best game of the season for the Rambee line, as they stopped everything the Eagles had through the line, but the Ram pass defense was rather weak and it kept them in hot water all day. The score ended in a 0-0 deadlock. For the second game in a row, the midgets ended in a tie, as they fought the Spartans to a l2-l2 draw. The Rambees started off fast but ended up slowly, to lose a I2 point lead they held in the first quarter. ln this tilt, jim Parker also had a field day as he found a hole in the H.P. line and ran 76 yards for a TD, to help him in his total of 96 yards for the day. At the end of the season the Ram midgets had gained 663 yards to the 503 gained by their opponents in four games. No team made more than 90 yards from scrimmage against our midgets but in the pass department H.P. made l7Z yards of their total ot l82 through the air, The Rambees made 34 first downs to their adversar- ies 20 but came out on the short end of the total points, scoring 24 to 30 made by opponents, the 30 digits being made in two games, the other two teams being held scoreless. rfnlxl X Gibi Gets One Off-Eads Goes Down 53 54 ,CX ,. 1: A . Dude Smith Drives Through Garfield's Line 1946 Varsity Basketball-Leland Ryder, Captain CASABA MEN GRAB THIRD Although the varsity casaba season was not especially outstanding as far as winning games was concerned, the quintet had plenty of fight and really put out all they had when they were in the game. ln the final league standings, the Rams finished in a tie for third place. During the course of the schedule, Coach Garner changed the first string around many times to find a right combination. The main trouble was, although the fellows had plenty of height, they couldn't work together. The final team that finishe'd the sea- son consisted of lack Stanleyflack Kintz, Leland Ryder icaptainl , George Pope, and Don Benson. When the official league season had terminated, the Ramblers had won four and lost six. This record gave them a tie with the jordan Bulldogs and the Riis Vikings. The Ramblers had their most exciting games against Garfield casabamen. Both games were won by the close margin of one point, with the Rams being on the top of the score both times. For the entire season Leland Ryder was high point getter with a grand total of 66. Don Benson was close behind with 47. Don was also the only Ram representative on the All League team, as he was chosen for the second string guard position. At the end of the season, Mr. Gar- ner told the fellows he liked their fine spirit during the year and had enjoyed coaching the team. Don Benson Pack Stanley lack Kintz I55 BEE'S CHAMPS FOR 1946 ln one heck of a scrambled league, the Rambee basketball team, came out Eastern League Champions with a record of seven wins and three losses. Although the casabamen lost two hard fought games to Bell, they won the league because Bell lost four contests. Ramvilles B courtmen started things oft right when they downed the Spartans 31-Zl. However, their next game was with the Eagles, and they lost a heartbreaker, l6-l4. This tilt was highlited by some very rough play. The Rambees then proceeded to smother Riis and Garfield in succession by scores of 35-l5, and 36-I2 re- spectively, and went atop the league, The Bulldogs, over Watts way, then downed them 27-21 in an evenly fought game. After downing H.P. again 28-I9 they met their downfall again in a rough and tumble game with Bell. The Eaglets came out vic- tors l5-l2 in this game where no one could hit the basket. Then the Bees came out ot the rut and downed Riis, Garfield, and lor- dan in a row by scores of 27-I5. 3l-28, and lastly 3l-l5 in a game that meant the Championship. Dutch Hartzheim 'and Stu Dol- linger proved to be the stars of the Championship team, with Hartzheim garnering the scoring title and Dollin- ger proving the defensive star, while scoring planty of points also. Mr. Hartzheim peppered the pot for 96 digits during the season to take the title, scoring l4 points in the Garfield and Mt. Carmel encounters. Bell, Gardena and San Pedro tell to the Rampagin' Rams. The All City Preliminaries were the big let down for the Ramblers as every thing went wrong and a number ot our fellows who were expected to place, just didn't. As it turned out, the only Cater to enter in the city meet was Edgar Bur- cham, who nabbed a fifth on the long horse. The Ramblers topped off the season with an impressive showing in the league meet by hoarding GOVZ points more than all the other schools com- bined. The runnerup position was gar- nered by wins over Garfield, Bell, Huntington Park, and a practice win over Cathedral. During the league season records were broken like glass with Dan Donovan breaking the two lap rccord a number of times. The most molested record was the torrid 440, with dynamite lack Gibilisco shattering it twice and Bud Curry topping both of these efforts with a 51.5 jaunt, at the time this story went to press. Coach Carner's clan probably got just as much joy out of whipping the Bell Eagles 64 to 40 as they did win- ning the Huntington Park meet, since most of the outstanding thinclads made up the varsity football team which went down to defeat at the hands of the powerful Eagles. High point man was lack Cibilisco with 48 markers counting the prac- tice tilts and omitting the relay points. Dan Donovan holds down the second spot, being undefeated in league com- petition. Since the city meet will be held after this is written the staff of the annual wish Dan Donovan, Bud Curry, jack C-ibilisco, Tom Brown, and the relay team the best of luck in the league and city meets. These fellows are all strong Cater bids for points in the annual Coliseum relays and should give South Gate her best showing in a good many moons. Gibilisco and Smith hitting the tape in front 59 Melvin Wins Century for Third Place Cees Bee's Take Third Finishing the season with a batting average of .SOO the South Gate Bee track and field team wound up in third place with wins over the Bell Eagles and the H.P. Spartababes. The Rambees barely got by the Bell mid- gets, as they ran up enough points to win despite losing the relay. The final count was 48 to 47. Leading the Bee squad and with All City potentialities was low and high barrier man Melvin Wright. Mel hit 9.4 in the highs which is 4 tenths oft the school standard. Although the Rams didn't win all their meets, they put up plenty of fight all through the season and were really beaten badly only by the jordan Bulldogs, who are plenty tough in the Bee department, besides having an cxceptionally strong varsity. The Ramblers were strong in re- serves in the hurdles also. with Walt Smith and Paul Halopoft nabbing sec- ond and third with regularity. lim Curcie, Lynn Stover, and Leland Bar made up a mighty potent shot put trio with all three fellows making their letters. The baseballers were in a losing skein of three straight games. The main trou- ble was not enough practice. The fellows muffed the ball on an average of six errors a game. Exactly who is leading in this field is unknown, since all the fellows were trying so hard to have the most errors. ilt was a plenty close contestl . At the end of the third game, Don Hitchman batting the pill at a .444 clip lead the pack in the batting de- partment, with four bingles in nine jaunts to the platter. Second were Al Long and Lefty Robinson who were deadlocked at .333 apiece. As a whole the team was in a bat- ting and fielding slump which certain- ly won't win games, since the two most important phases of the game are batting and fielding. In the first league game the Rams were downed by the Franklin Panthers, which was by far the best game the Gaters played all year. The final tally read Franklin 7, South C-ate 5. Roy Chapman was the batting hero with a triple and a four master. In the second game the Poly Parrots downed the local aggregation 8 to l as the Rambler infield fell apart at the seams. The Rams were held to three hits, two of them bunts. The last game was a repetition of the second tilt up until the final two stanzas, when the Gates rolled up six runs trying desperately to overcome the nine run lead enjoyed by the visitors. For the rest of the schedule the sports staff wishes the team a much brighter outlook than their previous showing. i i W.TgTuE?? ffSggW?wEg ,.v gps . g ZWQ wa W I '53 D ,.., , V ,.-xglixkx S 1 ?sg.4sggf5? ' S Diamond Mentor Hastings One of the best tennis seasons in the history of Ramville was had this year, as the Ramblers split the title with our old standby Huntington Park. With the Rams and Spartans being undefeated up till the first clash be- tween the two teams, the Gaters sur- prised the men from Sparta by down- ing them 4-3 on the fine work of our doubles team, giving the Huntington Park team their first defeat in a long time. Both squads kept up their win- ning skein until the next encounter when the Sparta netmen downed the locals 5-2, to even the series. The Ramblers downed the Bell Eagles 7-O two times in succession to help even things up for the humiliat- ing defeat at the hands of the Bell football squad. Leading racketeer for the Ramblers was Tom Byron, who went through an undefeated season, with most of his victories being of the whitewash variety. The Gaters batted about .500 in practice games, downing Cathedral and jefferson twice. At the climax of the season, the Ramblers ranked as follows on the tennis ladder.
