Miss Frances W. Durbrow ON THE RETIRED LIST In the summer of 1951 Miss Frances Durbrow, chairman of the language department since 1942, retired. During her thirty years at South, she had endeared herself to many South Siders by organ- izing the Inter Nos club, preparing the diplomas ' lor graduation exercises, and directing noon hour study groups. Merely to be in Miss Durbrow's class was a stimulating educational experience. It meant coming in contact with a true scholar, who rep- resented the highest ideals of character and cul- ture. Her classes recognized these sterling quali- ties. They appreciated her high intellectual integrity, her standard of excellence, her breadth of vision, and especially her selfless devotion to them and to all South's interests- And now stu- dents and faculty of South Division extend to her a heartfelt Ave atque Vale for the years ahead. Brown Mr. Bertram Brown, whose thirty years at South from 1911-1941, were spent in teaching history and civics, died November 4, 1951 after a short illness. He was head of the social science department, supervisor of Coblentz hall, and active in sports. Besides being athletic manager at South for many years, he coached football, basketball, and track. Training graduating seniors to get safely down the stage steps at commencement was his most unusual job. At times, however, he was unsuccessful, for as he remarked, They fell so fast that there wasn't anything I could do but pick them up. His keen sense of humor kept everyone in his United States history classes alert and interested. This alumnus of Franklin university became vice-prin- cipal of Pulaski High school after leaving South in 1941. At the time of his death Mr. Brown was vice-principal at Custer High school. Page 23
