Additionally, SOUTH CAROLINA was assigned duties as carrier and amphibious readiness group escort. Cgm ll MICHAEL G. GAF FNEY aptain Gaffney was bom in Washing- ton, DC on June 28. 1949. He grew up in Lee's Summit. Missouri. He graduated from the U. Nat al Academy in June, 1971. After cotnpletion of nuclear power training, he joined the USS CALI- FORNIA DLGN 361precotntnissioning crew. Upon connnissioning the USS CAl-l- 1'fORN1AtCON 361. he serx ed as the RC Division Officer and later as the lilcctrical Officer. 1 roniSeptetnher 1975 until June 978. he served as the Auxiliaries Officer of USS N1Ml'1'ZtC'VNo8i. llc then ioincd the staffofthe U. S. Natal .-Xcatleiny as a Coin- aany Officer. After coitipletion ot the llcpartinent 7-'lead course at the Sttrface Warfare School 1Q'ointnantl in Next port. U. S. Atlantic Fleet. From December 1986 until November 1988, he served as Executive Officer of USS MIS- SISSIPPI QCGN 401. Captain Gaffney commanded USS MOINESTER LFF 10975 from April 1989 until February 1991. He then served as the Head ofthe Surface Nuclear Power Branch at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Wash- ington. D. C. until January 1993. He gradu- ated froin the NATO Defense College in .luly 1993. Captain Oaffney's decorations include the lNleritorious Service Medal with three gold stars and the Navy Commendation Medal. He is authorized to wear various other service rihhons. Captain Gaffney has two children, Michael and Maria.
