Cldegdf The l953 Soldan-Blewett baseball team, unlike most of the other schools teams, has quite a few experienced players from last season and the results are already showing. Vilith Mr. Walka's hard work and such players as Mark Herman, Marv Andrews, Don Carafiol, Chuck Lahay, Bill Funkhouser, Ed Stein, Charlie Yancey, Clyde Sells, Dave Grossman, and Cor- nell Bowen, returning from last year's team, the boys should really go places, lf the first few games are any criterion, the team will have an abundance of hitting power and if the pitching is kept up by Herman and Yancey, the team will be very hard to beat. At present the boys are in second place in the public league. We hope the team will con- tinue its fine play and bring us home a trophy by finishing the season on top. FIRST ROW: Yancey, C., Caraliol, Stein, Bowen, Funkhouser, Herman, Shelton, Grossman, Lahay. SECOND ROW Mr, Walka, Ashby, Sells, Andrew, Coffman, Benassi, Waldman, Averbuch, Long, Baker. THIRD ROW: Carnaghi, Eaton Richey, Keathley, Slayden, Rosenbloom, Yancey, F., Hoffman, Knowles, Goldman. Seventy-eight
SoldanfBlewett, once a power in city athletics, but now only a shadow of its past glory seems to be making a comeback in many of the fields of athletic endeavors. One of the most striking examples is its young and powerful track team which most likely will contend for top honors in city wide competition. l-lugh Wilson and Max Schwartz, returning lettermen, have both shown excellent time in the sprints. Ouarter milers Mullens, Benkelman, and Schaap all seem to be up around their peak in condition and per- HTLC will be adequately taken care of by veterans Mayer, Fitzgerald, Huffman, and l-licks. ln the hurdles Soldan4Blewett is fortunate to be rep' resented by Weber, Kellar, and Bach as they should add many points to the team's record this year. Coach Delfilio deserves a big hand for the diligent work he has performed on be half of the track team. The highlights of this year's competition as usual will be the main event, the field day meet.
