Barr, prin- cipal of our beloved alma-mater, Soldan- Blewett. He has rendered invaluable service to us and to countless others who have previously attended this school. His administrative qualities, sense of humor, and ability to get along with teachers and students alike is greatly appreciated by all of us. Under his leadership two fine schools were merged into one great one, Soldan- Blewett. The greatness oi our school and the men and women it has produced make it the great tradition, to strive for and to achieve. Towards this end, Mr. Barr has worked unceasingly dur- ing the many years he has been associated with our school. Thus, it is fitting that We dedicate this yearbook to our respected and revered principal, Mr. Barr. Five F011 Wllltll Six The last few months have been busy ones for the REFLECTOR staff. We have been preparing many articles and pictures and organizing them into an interesting and informative yearbook ready for publi- cation. We think that the articles, pictures, and other features in this edition will call to mind in later years the many cherished memories of the school year 19524- 1953 at Soldan-Blewett. What are we to do To justify the faith And fulfill the hope? We have been taught The many subjects in the curriculum of youth. We have received the knowledge and absorbed it, We have delved into the wonders, The wisdom, the sciences, and the culture of the ages. All has been given to us And given freely. We have learned to love freedom, our fellow man, the Arts, sciences, and history. We have learned to learn. And in attaining this, Have entered the portals of wisdom. Twenty-four What shall be do with our knowledge? Shall we keep it to ourselves and say, We have learned all? Shall we remain in our towers of ivory- Smug and self-satisfied? No! This we shall not do. We have not been made into monuments of knowledge That are to become engulfed in selfish minds, For this wisdom must be used for the benefit of all mankind. We must come forth with utmost effort, To bring to all brotherly love, The joy of happiness in freedom, Of freedom in life, Of freedom everlasting, Thus, Youth of today, shall be the Guardian of peace -W,-J -,qP,,y.Y, - Uf icerri une 1953 Iohn William Holt, Ir. Forty-one Forty-two We at Soldan-Blewett are proud of the variety and strength of our student activity program. While the regular curriculum provides the backbone of our learn- ing for our practical and scholastic future, activities teach us the invaluable lessons of getting along with our fellow students in work and play. ln some instances these activities approach the problems and solutions of future pursuits. Above all they make the school alive and have importance away from the classroom. So, school activities are those extra-curricular abilities which are creative and make us the balanced and normal individuals that We hope to be. if if Winn' mm Ns00mv Qiwvw Mil '55u,.-4 N9 ... OFHCERS FALL TERM President Bob Schliesser Vice-President Ed lndelicaio Recording Secretary Barbara Browne Corresponding Secretary lanice Cooper Treasurer Harry Markley F orty-four sgjfuclenf Counci The Soldan-Blewett Student Council was formed in the fall term, 1950, after repeated requests by the students were approved by our princi- pal. The first president was Robert Dieckman, who has been followed by five excellent successors. The formation of the Student Council was the culmination of a long-time desire for a student representative body in which the wishes of the students could be expressed. One of the first accomplishments of the Student Council was the combination of the lunch rooms. For years, there had been a girls' and a boys' separate lunchroorn. Now, we are able to eat in either lunchroom. Another of the first works of the Student Council was our school appearance in Prom, the teen-agers magazine. This had been .gzwlenf Counci opposed until the Council's hard work gave us a chance to appear. Then followed a series of dances, drives for sports' ticket sales, and spe- cial aud. sessions. The formation of Good Cite izenship Week, during which Student Council elections are held and good citizenship is espee cially observed, is now one of our nicest tra- ditions. This past term, a new Soldan-Blewett tradition was begun. For the first time, we played a Homecoming Game, sponsored a lfomecoming rally and dance and crowned our first this The and and football queen, Betty Duncan. We hope will be a lasting tradition, result of the Student Councils formation work has been an increase in friendliness spirit throughout the school. And after all, that is really the most important aim to accomplish. ln the Limelight OFFICERS SPRING TERM President, Cornell Bowen Vice-President Betty Woods Recording Secretary Barbara Goldberg Corresponding Secretary Bettie lo l-lawkinw Treasurer Harry Monteith FIRST BOW: Feinstein, O'Neal, Hawkins, Goldberg, Bowen, Woods, lvionteith, Frank, Rosen, Gelhiian, Mullen, Ellgaiim SECOND BOW: Cohen, Rothman, Thomas, O'Dell, Puskar, Keller, Berger, Davis, Kiortses, Miller, Stolar. Agora consists of one member from each advisory in Soldan-Blewett. Their chief duties are to sell the school newspaper Spotlight, the school yearbook, REFLECTOR, and passes for football, basketball, and other athletic activities. There are seven teams this year under their own individual team captains. At the beginning of each second period the members of these teams deposit the money they have collected from their advisories with their team captains, who in turn write out a receipt for each depositor. They then deposit all the money they have collected with the teller. When this has been completed the teller then turns the money over to the file clerk to finish the business of the day. The head staff member and foreman of the production is our sponsor, Mr. Forsman. The steps of production, though able to be stated in a small space, take the full school year to complete. The first evidence of our work is the fall picture schedule, These pic- tures are taken, sent to the engraver, and iden- tifications sent to the printer. We must now select layouts that will be new and attractive, Always in the back of our thoughts is the idea of some innovation in the general layout of the book. Also we must keep in mind the purpose of a yearbook -to bring the students the schools major events told mostly in pictures. Spring must stimulate work because then the staff members realize that the deadline is near- ing and the work not yet nearly completed. Another picture schedule is posted and the same procedure is gone through again as was done in the tall. By now irost articles are in and the dummy is shaping into a completed yearbook. A came paign for subscriptions is held and hopes are high for a record breaking response. The student body now anticipates the coming ot the yearbook just as much as the staff. When it does arrive in the nineteenth week, it is a matter ot custom that each one exchange his REFLECTOR with another to Write some catchy saying in it, The statt sincerely hopes that you enjoy your copy ot the l953 REFLECTOR. Its main object is to instill in its members the feeling that they are actually reporters work- ing in a real newspaper office, publishing the school paper, SPOTLIGHT. The Iournalism Class is divided into two groups, the staff members and the cubs. The staff members have had one term of journalism ex- perience, among whose duties is to gather news, write editorials, proof read, type, make headlines, and endeavor to help the cubs with the responsibilities of a newspaper. Near the end of the term, the cubs receive the opportunity to show what newspaper knowl- edge they have gained by putting out their own edition. The course provides valuable training for stu- dents who plan to make journalism their life's work. lt is also an asset for its English training. Miss Helen C. Discussions were held which touched upon imminent problems facing the world today. Each member taking part in these discussions was given the oppor- tunity to express his views besides being given valuable practice in the art of debating. Quiz programs with catchy answers were thoroughly enjoyed. All these programs were prepared throughout by members oi the various commit- tees. During the term Mr. Biegelsen taught the organization folk songs and folk dances. Ha Ivria was given permission to use films from a television serial for use during club meetings. Wudic Music is the key that opens the door to a happy life. lt is the ultimate goal of the musical student body of Soldan-Blewett to become well-versed in music appreciation and performance. This goal is a reality of most of these students be- cause of the able leadership of Miss Thym. Each year more than 300 students are placed in various groups and become part of the music family. The ambition of all these students is to reach the A Cappella Choir, which now has seventy members. The Choir is the senior music group and represents the student body throughout the city. An example of this would be the fine caroling done over the Christmas holidays and television programs as well as programs for civic groups such as college club and Womens Club of Richmond Heights. Charninade, named after Madame Chaminade C1861-l944l because of her recognition as the first woman composer, is divided into two groups of girls. The most advanced is called Senior Chaminade which has sixty-eight mem- bers. These girls work diligently and particif pate in many school programs, Also there is lunior Chaminade which strives to teach nec' essities in correct singing. After they achieved this they may advance into more experienced groups. Another music group which is considered outt- standing is the Boys' Glee Club with twenty seven members. These boys have fine voices which have been developed after a few terms. Vocal Ensemble is a mixed group composed of students who wish to become more profi cient in tone blending and parts Not only is singing done but records are played. Well known alumni often visit and perform for them. lunior Chorus is strictly for freshmen, Here students come three times a week in order to qualify later for more advanced groups. The members become acquainted with Soldan Blewett's Music Department. The students feel that it is auite an honor to belong to the music family, They believe that each member is an honest, straight forward person able to set an example for the rest of the school, Everyone is invited to try out with Miss Thym, and become a member of our music family. Although we didn't win a single game all year and scored only two touchdowns, the team played in such a way as to make everyone proud of them. We lost our first game on September 19, be- fore an enthusiastic crowd, as the U. City Indians won 19-0. We then journeyed to East St. Louis and lost by an overwhelming score, 53-U. But the line played very creditably as East Side had to score all but one of their touchdowns through passing. Entering league play, the team lost a close one to Cleveland 12-U. We were often deep in their territory, due to fine passing of Duke and Holt, but weren't able to cross the final stripe. The following week we were badly beaten by Beaumont, and it was only due to the fine playing of Tony larnes, that the score wasn't larger than 39-O. Then followed a non-league game which was lost to Kirkwood 26-U. We then met powerful McKinley and played very encouragingly but lost 21-U. The Tiger offense was good due to fine running by Cor- nell Bowen. In the Roosevelt game which followed, Ed Stein, helped by the fine playing of his brother loe, kept us from another shutout as we lost 466, The high score indicated the injuries of such f..i. s rs Q players as Mullen, Becker, lames, and English : X j N 55 ,Joey , ss ,. The 1953 Soldan-Blewett gymnastic team had a tough job on its hands, trying to equal the performance of last year's city, state and ln- vitational Champions. But the season opened successfully as the first team, Cejudo-Alva, Indelicato, Iones, Kodner, and Londe easily Won the Invitational meet which Was held De- cember 28, at the North Side Y.M.C.A. The meet saw Londe, who had recovered from last year's injury, successfully defend his all- round title, closely followed by lndelicato, who placed second in the all-round and Iones Eighty who was third - Kodner and Cejudo-Alva also performed creditably, Kodner placing seventh. The team Won the first place trophy followed by Hadley and Sumner. The city meet was next on the schedule and Mr. Seitz's boys were picked to win easily. But with the loss of several regulars the team placed third, the only bright spot being lndeli- cato's win of first place title and Iones' eighth place. The team is now Working out for the Ozark A. A. U. meet and is hoping for better luck. . The club was originated in l9l3 by Dr. Otto Koenig. Then in 1939, the club's direction was taken over by Mr. Plag and since 1951 has been under the supervision of Mr. Seitz. The members of the club practice many hours on the parallel bars, horizontal bar, side horse, long horse, and rings. The club practices every morning before school and twice a Week after school. Here's hoping the club continues to function successfully in the future years and continues to produce championship gymnastic teams. Paced by last year's lettermen, Gahen, Wolff, and O'Neal, this year's Soldan-Blewett golf team swung into action against Beaumont. The early form of this year's team composed of I-lolt, Lewis, Gahen, O'Neal, Spence, Litzman, Gilbert, Spiegelglass, and Wolff, showed many hours of diligent driving and putting practice. The schedule this year shows the boys meeting the public high school teams as well as many county teams. They are, however, without any league organization this year. Coach Plaq, who keeps a watchful eye on his hill and dale men, feels confident of a successful season. The entire school will look forward to the golf team adding its usual number of laurels to the name of Soldan-Blewett. Eighty-two FIRST ROW: Holt, Lewis, Gahen O'Nea1. SECOND ROW: Spense Litzinan, Gilbert, Spiegelglass, Wolff, Mr. Plag. A few weeks after the beginning of the new semester, on September l5 that group of racket swingers who make up our tennis team started practicing on the beautiful Forest Park tennis courts. lnstructed by Coach Plag and their able captain, Sanford Astor, the only returning ennid letterman, the team really worked hard but without the success of the teams in the pre- vious years. The netmen playing seven meets in all won only one against McKinley by a score of 3-2, thus ending the season in fifth place. The team consisted of Sanford Astor, who played first singles, Lloyd Goldman, the assis- tant captain, who played second singles, and Neal Goodwin who played third singles. Veterans Stanley Rosenbloom and Marty Migdal, the distance men, Bob Schaap, individual medly swimmer, and Ken Rothman and Hugh Wilson, the backstrokers, formed the nucleus ot an ex- perienced and well-balanced team. Up and coming freshman Al Lever appeared to give the team the necessary strength for a successful season. The team dropped its opener to St. Louis U. High but came back to beat McKinley in its inaugural league meet and looked forward to constant improvement as the season prog- ressed. The fellows eagerly awaited to com- pete in the annual state meet at Wilson Pool, Washington University. The competition was extremely rugged inasmuch as some of the best swimmers throughout the state were pres- ent. While many came close to placing, no firsts were taken.
