MR. MCEACHRON MR. HATFIELD With approximately seventy-five boys turning out for the 1949 football season. Coach Hatfield had much material to work with. as he narrowed down the players to a workable iorty. Returning lettermen. Captain Angelo Lombardo. and Ronald Suchart. took over halfback and quarterback slots. respectively, while lim lones and Paul Ashby alternated for the other haliback position. To fill in the rest of the back- field, Coach Hatfield interchanged Ioe Noce and Ierry Raskas as the other fullback. George Anastas and Bob Diekmann went back to their original positions at guard and end, respec- tively, while Iay Dee Hart switched to center where he performed very favor- ably. Soldan-Blewett started the season's play at University City. where they were handed a 20-6 defeat on September 20th by a strong, highly-rated eleven. The Tigers bolstered a good passing offense, but it looked rather weak be- side University City's strong ground attack. Ninety-tour joofdaff Things did not get any brighter, how- ever, when the Tiger eleven were handed their second straight defeat by East St. Louis in a close game, 13-S. Our boys fought hard and took heart when they grabbed a seven-point lead in the second quarter. thanks to a brilliant thirty-five yard run by Angelo Lom- bardo. But the Flyers quickly retaliated, scoring on a fumble, and finally forging ahead in the third quarter. BATTLEGROUND HlKEl TWO DOWN. MORE TO GO

As the hyphenated-eleven entered league play for the 1949 season with two defeats against them. they were determined to win. and Coach Hatfield especially enjoyed seeing them trounce the Southwest Longhorns 25-12. The game was highlighted with brilliant playing on the Tigers part during the whole encounter. as they com- pletely outclassed the Southwest eleven. Ronald Suchart gave evidence oi this as he raced eighty yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes ot the game. Strengthened by their last victory. the team then proceeded to smother the McKinley eleven on a rain-soaked attemoon in rnid-October. The score was I9-0. Ronald Suchart and Angelo Lombardo contributed to the scoring. the latter racing sixty yards for a touchdown in the second quarter ot the game. Monday night. October 24th. saw the Bengals, now regarded by some as a definite threat to the crown, encounter Beaumont in a thrilling spectacle, which might have seemed even more exciting. had our boys come out on top. Never- theless. we did manage to tie the Bluejackets 6-6 in a game marred by numerous penalties joofdaf Roosevelt practically smashed any Soldan- Blewett hopes tor a football championship this year. as they bucked our poor line defense for two touchdowns. The only sparkling action of the day was Ronald Suchart's 92-yard runback oi a kick-off. for a Bengal score with less than two minutes remaining in the last quarter.
