MR. MCEACHRON MR. HATFIELD With approximately seventy-five boys turning out for the 1949 football season. Coach Hatfield had much material to work with. as he narrowed down the players to a workable iorty. Returning lettermen. Captain Angelo Lombardo. and Ronald Suchart. took over halfback and quarterback slots. respectively, while lim lones and Paul Ashby alternated for the other haliback position. To fill in the rest of the back- field, Coach Hatfield interchanged Ioe Noce and Ierry Raskas as the other fullback. George Anastas and Bob Diekmann went back to their original positions at guard and end, respec- tively, while Iay Dee Hart switched to center where he performed very favor- ably. Soldan-Blewett started the season's play at University City. where they were handed a 20-6 defeat on September 20th by a strong, highly-rated eleven. The Tigers bolstered a good passing offense, but it looked rather weak be- side University City's strong ground attack. Ninety-tour joofdaff Things did not get any brighter, how- ever, when the Tiger eleven were handed their second straight defeat by East St. Louis in a close game, 13-S. Our boys fought hard and took heart when they grabbed a seven-point lead in the second quarter. thanks to a brilliant thirty-five yard run by Angelo Lom- bardo.
