The Gym Club originated in 1913 under the direction of Dr. Otto M. Koenig. Through the years the club has functioned with great success. Mr. Plag. the present sponsor. has guided the club since 1939. Its purpose is twofold: to develop a sound body and train boys to rep- resent Soldan-Blewett in the various dual gym- nastic meets. Interscholastic Gym Meet, and the A,A.U. Meet. Much work is involved in the training: it re- quires much time and toil. The boys work diligently on the horizontal bars. parallel bars. side horse, and mats. One Hundred Two The Soldan-Blewett Gym Team had only one Ietterrnan, Wilford Dotson. returning from ,last year's championship team. The eleven other lettermen either had graduated or were schol- astically ineligible. As a result this year's team consisted mostly of young, inexperienced boys, many in their second term. The boys had the spirit, but the material was lacking. The Tigers, therefore. were unable to uphold previous team's rec- ords. In their opening meet Beaumont trounced the Tigers 390-293: but the Bengals rebounded and defeated Hadley in their next start. For the iirst time in thirteen years the Bengals did not win the Interscholastic Gym Meet. com- ing in third with Beaumont the champion. Although we did not have a championship team this year, the gymnasts are young and should improve with experience.
