Mn. Fmtmcsnssncsrt, ccwchl Materia!! Before the Soldan-Blewett basketball team en- tered into league play this season, they played several games with county and private schools. They opened the season by suffering a loss at the hands of a fast Principia team KSU-453. Deutch, Siegfried. and Towbin were high scorers, Towbin leading with twenty-three points. The next game was lost to Brentwood C61-283. The team then recovered, scoring a victory over McBride t42-38.2 It was commented that this was the first occasion that the team's offense and defense both clicked at the same time. The next game. against a strong C.B.C. team resulted in another victory for the team K38-313. Then came disappointment with a loss to DeAndreiS 143-311. During the Christmas vacation. the Tigers played some thrilling games in the Normandy Tournament. In their first game they beat Webster Groves by a close score C57-SSD. As the hyphenated-eleven entered league play for the 1949 season with two defeats against them. they were determined to win. and Coach Hatfield especially enjoyed seeing them trounce the Southwest Longhorns 25-12. The game was highlighted with brilliant playing on the Tigers part during the whole encounter. as they com- pletely outclassed the Southwest eleven. Ronald Suchart gave evidence oi this as he raced eighty yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes ot the game. Strengthened by their last victory. the team then proceeded to smother the McKinley eleven on a rain-soaked attemoon in rnid-October. The score was I9-0. Ronald Suchart and Angelo Lombardo contributed to the scoring. the latter racing sixty yards for a touchdown in the second quarter ot the game. Monday night. October 24th. saw the Bengals, now regarded by some as a definite threat to the crown, encounter Beaumont in a thrilling spectacle, which might have seemed even more exciting. had our boys come out on top. Never- theless. we did manage to tie the Bluejackets 6-6 in a game marred by numerous penalties joofdaf Roosevelt practically smashed any Soldan- Blewett hopes tor a football championship this year. as they bucked our poor line defense for two touchdowns. The only sparkling action of the day was Ronald Suchart's 92-yard runback oi a kick-off. for a Bengal score with less than two minutes remaining in the last quarter. Central then made quick work oi the demoral- ized Tigers, scoring in every quarter but one. 18-9. Iay Dee Hart received All-District honors from one of the local papers and Ronald Suchart received honorable mention from all three. Others receiving honorable mention tor their fine work during the season were Angelo Lom- bardo, Bob Diekmann, and George Anastas. The twenty-two players who received letters tor this past 1949 season are Angelo Lom- bardo. Ronald Suchart, Paul Ashby. lim Iones, Ioe Noce. Ierry Raskas, lay Dee Hart, A1 Scholar. Ed McMannes. Wayne Lowe, Eddie Rosen, lean DuBail. Bob Coter. Bob Diekmann. captain for '50, George Baker, Dean Melton, lack Krekeler, Frank Luzenske, Tom Bianchi, Ioe Wooden. Z?a5LelAaf than one minute to play. In these last seconds, Soldan-Blewett got the ball, Ioe Oppenheim made the basket. his first ofthe season, winning the game, and the crowd went wild. The next night, the team beat McBride Q50-441 and reached the semi-finals, but were defeated by Southwest, t42-37l. The team then entered league play, defeating McKinley C52-34l in their first game, losing to Southwest t48-39? in their next one. The boys scored another victory for the Alma Mater. defeating Hadley Tech. by a margin which should have been larger 132-275. With gradua- tion approaching, the lanuary seniors did not play in the rest of the games. This loss of men definitely, hindered the team. In their next game, they were defeated by Roosevelt C42-353, and then hy Beaumont 179-353. their worst defeat cf the season. At this game, the services of Al Towbin were lost because of a leg injury. There were defeats by Central Q52-581 and by Cleveland K56-313, The team finished the sea- son in sixth place in the Public High League. After the league season was over, Soldan- Blewett entered the University City Regional Toumament and took third place. In this tournament they beat a strong Affton team C27-255, lost to University City t54-361, and heat Hancock 448-431. Of the twenty games that the team played, eight were won and twelve were lost.
