HE Soldan-Blewett Gym Team has start- ed to carry on where the great Soldan and Blewett Teams of the past have left off, by winning the twelfth annual Gymnastic Meet. The team was under the watchful eye of Mr. Plag. Although the team was strong, it was not at its best because of injuries. Merle Dudley was injured a week before the meet, and Ed Weber and Wilford Dotson both had under- gone operations for appendicitis. The opera- tion didn't seem to trouble Ed Weber, for he walked away with first place in the meet, while Oliver Byerly and Tom Bresnahan tied for third. Bob Mueller took fifth, with J. C. Taylor right behind him. Other outstanding men of the team were Don Knickmeyer, Nor- man Schlag, and Arthur Shevitz. The boys on the team were encouraged greatly by the large turn out of the student body at the meet. The team will be weakened by graduation, but we are hoping for another championship next year. In the dual meets with the other schools our team also made a good showing and beat the North Side Y team, too. Graduating lettermen: gm Bam Ed Weber, Merle Dudley, Bob Mueller, J. C. 66 SOUND mind in a sound body has been the motto of the Gym Club since it was formed in 1913 by Dr. Otto M. Koenig. Our present coach, Mr. Plag, has guided Gym Club activities since the death of its founder in 1939. Throughout the year many lasting friend- ships have been formed. Many times former members return to visit Mr. Plag and Work on the apparatus. The aim of the Gym Club's year-round practice is to develop gymnasts to represent the school in the annual Interscholastic Gym Meet, the A. A. U. Meet, and various dual meets. The evolution of a capable gymnast re- quires much time and toil, but many obsta- cles are overcome through squad Work and patient, individual instruction by our coach and the more advanced boys. .. J-'ffw ' In the annual Interscholastic Meet each member of the team performs a required m KAL exercise and optional exercises on the hori- y zontal bar, parallel bars, side horse, and the mats. The exercises are graded on a basis of ten points, points being received on rhythm, difficulty, poise, and continuity of the exercise. HE G.A.A., or the Girl's Athletic Asso- ciation, is an organization open to girls of Q.!d..!4. all terms who are interested in acquiring a better knowledge and practice of sports. The club, one of the largest in our school, provides an afternoon of fun a week for the girls, and also rewards them for their - AA4- achievements. A girl earns points in G.A.A. in many ways. Posture tests, perfect attendance, achievement tests, and tournaments are all part of a plan for earning points. When five hundred fifty points have been acquired, a girl receives a small letter, eleven hundred points earns her a large letter. A gold pin is awarded to those girls who have earned a large letter, have a G average, who pass a physical examination, and have proved themselves good citizens of the school. Page One Hundred Twelve
