HE Soldan-Blewett Baseball Team, under Coach Frankenberger's instruction, began practicing March 1. Inclement weather, however, limited the number of days of prac- tice before their first scheduled games. With eleven returning lettermen, Eugene Jones, Stanley Schwartz, Nate Goldstein, Ronald Suchart, Angelo Lombardo, Al Tow- bin, Bill Haub, Stan Grossman, Leo Catsavis, Tilman Olive, and Howard Bierman, the team seems to have good fielding and hit- ting, but seems to be weak from the stand- point of pitching. The team according to positions: Stan Grossman and Tilman Olive, catch- ers, Al Whitey Towbin, Nate Goldstein, Carl Enloe, Charles DeWitt, Jim Mitch- ell, and Gene Cooley, pitchers, Stanley Schwartz, first base, Ronald Suchart and Nate Goldstein, second base, Bill Haub and Nate Goldstein, shortstop, ,Ernie Williams, third base, and outfielders Angelo Lombardo, Howard Bierman, Marvin Mueller, Jimmie Bagwell, Joe Oppenheim, and Leo Catsavis. In non-league contests the Tigers lost to St. Louis U. High f7-121 and Webster Groves 67-91. In league games the Tigers lost to Cleve- land Q7-145 and Central Q4-75, but then won a game with Roosevelt Q4-35 by scoring three runs in the last inning. HE Soldan-Blewett Tennis Team, under the able coaching of Mr. Bockelbrink and with the return of lettermen Al Siegfried, Bob Baker, Howard Lesser, Aaron Osherow, Melvin Newman, and Paul Morgenstern, ex- pected to bring home the first trophy to the new Soldan-Blewett High School. Hopes for a championship rose as the sea- son progressed and the team proceeded to defeat first Beaumont, and then Cleveland and McKinley by score of 5-0, but these hopes were jolted by their loss to Roosevelt f0-55, after having defeated Central 14-IJ and Southwest 13-25. However, the Tiger net men had a highly successful season- they tied for second place in the Public High League. The team was composed of: Al Siegfried, first singles, Bob Baker, second singles, Howard Lesser, third singles, Aaron Oshe- row, Harvey Goldstein, and Melvin Newman, alternating at first doubles, Paul Morgen- stern and Harvey Meyer, second doublesg and Jerry Zimmerman and Alan Kohm, third doubles. 66 SOUND mind in a sound body has been the motto of the Gym Club since it was formed in 1913 by Dr. Otto M. Koenig. Our present coach, Mr. Plag, has guided Gym Club activities since the death of its founder in 1939. Throughout the year many lasting friend- ships have been formed. Many times former members return to visit Mr. Plag and Work on the apparatus. The aim of the Gym Club's year-round practice is to develop gymnasts to represent the school in the annual Interscholastic Gym Meet, the A. A. U. Meet, and various dual meets. The evolution of a capable gymnast re- quires much time and toil, but many obsta- cles are overcome through squad Work and patient, individual instruction by our coach and the more advanced boys. .. J-'ffw ' In the annual Interscholastic Meet each member of the team performs a required m KAL exercise and optional exercises on the hori- y zontal bar, parallel bars, side horse, and the mats. The exercises are graded on a basis of ten points, points being received on rhythm, difficulty, poise, and continuity of the exercise.
