HE Soldan-Blewett Swimming Team, un- der the coaching of Mr. Bockelbrink, began the season with ten returning members, Bill Schwartz, Mel Miller, Fred Ungar, Bill Mor- rison, Lawrence Hazelip, Bob Lefton, Frank Seever, Leo Pashos, Arthur Ash, and Bob Kelly. However, four new members, Ber- nard Herman, Pat Perez, Dick Fisher, and Charles Fisher, were soon added. In their first meet they defeated McKinley 140-355 , but they lost the next three encoun- ters to Cleveland 117-583, Central Q28-475, and Roosevelt Q27-485. They recovered from these losses to defeat Hadley C46-285, but then lost to the team which later won the State Championship, Beaumont, by a score of 68-7 . With a record of two wins and four losses in league competition, the Soldan- Blewett natators placed fifth in the Public High League race. The team placed fifth in the Public High League Swimming Carnival at Wilson Pool and eleventh in the State Swimming Meet. With most of the members of the team returning next year, Coach Bockelbrink looks f l . gaffefdaf FIRST ROW: Melton, Sucliart, Cofer, Catsavis, Hannagan, Goldst Henson, Towbin, Baker, Enloe, Deutch, Kile, Oppcnheim. HE Soldan - Blewett Basketball Team opened its Public High League season by losing to Cleveland C51-305, after leading at the end of the first quarter by a score of 12-4. After defeating McKinley by a score of 48-40, the Tigers were downed by a strong Southwest five 157-309. Recuperating from this defeat, the Tigers defeated Hadley C38- 18J and then lost a hard fought game to Roosevelt 144-385. Joe Oppenheim showed his ability in this game as he paced the Ti- gers with seventeen points. Playing against superior height, the Soldan-Blewett cagers matched a highly-rated Beaumont team for almost three quarters of the game. only to fall behind in the last quarter C46-305. The Soldan-Blewett team ended its Public High League season by defeating Central Q53-451. Eddie Deutch scored twenty-one points to lead the Tigers to victory. With a total of three victories and four losses in league play, the Tigers tied for fourth place in the Pub- lic High Basketball League. The mainstays of this year's team will return next year and Coach Frankenberger hopes for a more successful season. HE Soldan-Blewett Tennis Team, under the able coaching of Mr. Bockelbrink and with the return of lettermen Al Siegfried, Bob Baker, Howard Lesser, Aaron Osherow, Melvin Newman, and Paul Morgenstern, ex- pected to bring home the first trophy to the new Soldan-Blewett High School. Hopes for a championship rose as the sea- son progressed and the team proceeded to defeat first Beaumont, and then Cleveland and McKinley by score of 5-0, but these hopes were jolted by their loss to Roosevelt f0-55, after having defeated Central 14-IJ and Southwest 13-25. However, the Tiger net men had a highly successful season- they tied for second place in the Public High League. The team was composed of: Al Siegfried, first singles, Bob Baker, second singles, Howard Lesser, third singles, Aaron Oshe- row, Harvey Goldstein, and Melvin Newman, alternating at first doubles, Paul Morgen- stern and Harvey Meyer, second doublesg and Jerry Zimmerman and Alan Kohm, third doubles.
