Each leaf relates its particular role in the story. Using leaves as a theme, the 1959 Sodurkan will attempt to tell the story of another year in Sodus Central School.' For every aspect of our school life, we must include a leaf. The first leaf will tell of the heritage of our school. enty-five years ago, the class of 1934 produced the first rbook. They, too, were thinking of leaves, leaves which we share with them. Mongst the maples and the loCustS was their Alma Mater, and it is ours. Today the symbol of the maple and the locust leaves has been reborn. Our school seal has these same leaves in its background. Maple and locust trees have been planted on the school campus so that our school once again may bear their shade. Our second leaf must tell of the knowledge that we gather. New learning comes with each grade. As leaves Qwv-together-so we grow as we progress through the grades leaving each grade a new leaf in our uncompleted book of life. In time, we reach high school where we learn how to live in the world. All of our studies, each of our classes, trains us for the years following our formal schooling. We are prepared to build good homes and happy futures. The third leaf must tell of the extracurricular life in our school. In order that we may live a good life, our special abilities and interests are developed. Our extracurricular activities help us to appreciate, to unfold, and to grow. prise our schooling. If one of these is missing, our educa- tion will want. Our culture will lack. With the help of our community and our faculty, our Sodus Central School en- dows us with these things, the background which equips us to meet the challenges of life. Not only have our teachers continued to learn, but also they have continued to serve in the community, travel through our country, and join professional committees and organizations. So, our teachers continued to learn. Mrs. Bellinger, Mrs. Fletcher, Miss Lingle and Mrs. Richards took a course from Syracuse University. Miss Lingle completed courses at Penn. State University and Mrs. Bellinger completed another course at William Smith. Mr. Mastroleo studied at the University of Louisville and 'at Hobart College. Mr. McGowan and Mrs. Kimpland studied at the University of Rochester. Mr. Vanderburg took a Driver Education Course at Oswego State Teachers' College, while Mr. Cooper studied at Brockport. Some members of our faculty received first hand information on important places in the United States. Mr. King traveled through ten states in New England and along the Eastern seaboard. The Hungerfords traveled through New England to Quebec. Mr. Vanderburg visited the Saint Lawrence Seaway Project, and Mr. Meneely took a trip to Maryland. Besides studying, traveling, and teaching, our faculty members somehow found time to belong to professional and fraternal organizations, taking an active part in the Wayne County and New York State Teachers' Associations. They serve on various school committees such as the Assembly, Ethics, Merit, and Faculty Advisory Committees. They are ac- tive in organizations such as the Rotary, Swing Choir, Sodus Recreation Association, Sodus Faculty Club, and various church groups. Thus, our teachers lead well-rounded lives. They are examples of the motto of New York State University: Let each become all he is capable of being. GRADE FACULTY The Grade teachers have not only to teach their pupils the three R's, but also to guide them and channel their thoughts in the right directions so that, as they are very young, they will develop an interest in knowledge and be eager to learn new things. A teacher does this in many ways. First of all, he must continue learning himself. He attends summer school at the college of his choice. He may take extension courses which are offered during the year. A teacher must constantly set a good example. He does this by being a leader and taking charge of various committees. In our school, we have much evidence of this. The Grade Student Council has set up Advisory Committees which are headed by two to four teachers who advise a committee composed of one student from each room. Here, students and teachers work together to improve the atmosphere of the school. Our teachers also serve by working with Girl and Boy Scout Troops. A grade teacher must interest his students in their work. In grade school, a child must explore many different fields of learning to find his special talents. He must have a well-rounded background so that he will be able to pursue in- telligently his specific abilities in high school. It is the high school student who finds that much of his academic ideas, economic stability, and social concepts can be traced to the things presented to him in elementary school by his grade teachers. This year, a new health room with many modern facilities was installed in the school. In addition to the newly furnished health room inthe central building, there is an infirmary in the new grade addition. Medical appraisal of each student was given by Dr. Hobbie, the school physician. This was followed by visual screening of each student. All students' teeth were cleaned by Miss Taylor, and hear- ing tests were conducted by Mrs. White. Miss Taylor, dental hygienist, examines and cleans the students' teeth. MCGOWAN August 24, 1941-April 5, 1956 We remember Eddie because, during his short time with us, he was one of us. We remember his good nature, his ready wit, his love for his home, his school, his church. We remember his courage. But most of all, We remember Eddie because he was touched by God. The Dij family of Beneden Knype, Triesland. The Grootegoed family of Zetten and Ann. A.F.S. The American Field Service foreign exchange program, in its fourth year in Sodus, this year brought Helle jerlo from Denmark to become a member of the Kenneth Smith family and the S.C.S. senior class. Last summer Ann Linscott sailed to the Netherlands where she lived for six weeks with two Dutch families. During this year Helle and Ann shared their A.F.S. experiences with many organizations in Sodus and the surrounding area. Sodus March 17, 1959 Dear Teachers and Fellow Students, My year in Sodus is drawing to its end. I will soon have to leave, but, before I say, Goodby, and board the airplane, I want to thank all of you for things that you may not realize you have done because they were natural for you. In the beginning of the year when everything was new to me, I remember how you explained and made me under- stand what was going on around me. You opened the door to your many and wonderful activities which I have enjoyed so much. When I walked down the halls, there were always cheering hi's and-hello's. Little things meant so much. You have represented the American people in a way I will be proud to spread to my country-folks. Living with people, learning their ways, traditions, cus- toms-this is how you promote understanding. It is the way to peace-The American Field Service way. Always, Jim r ,, -2, X 4 Q . , O e Q -J . QL , ,,... N ' 1 'k g ' 4 Ax A A LV I. . A, .,,. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The F.F.A. was a very active organization this year. At the Palmyra Fair, their apple exhib- its won most of the awards. At the school open house, the F.F.A. members set up exhibitions of life history and control of in- sects' diseases. When the basket- ball season started, they bought a popcorn machine and sold popcorn at the games. In jan- uary, they exhibited apples at the N. Y. S. Horticulture Society Meeting, where they won cups for exhibiting, identifying and judging the fruits. They placed second in the insect and disease contest and third in grading fruit. In the spring, they pre- sented assemblies for the P.T.A. and the student body. On May 9, 1959, they attended the F.F.A. convention at Schuylerville. Lee McDowell was President of the Sodus FFA chapter. He was elected Vice-President of the Wayne County F.F.A. Besides these honors, he was a candidate for the Empire Farmer Award given in May at the Schuylerville Convention. Don Brown was Vice-President, Gary Stevens, Secretary, Charles Dun- can, Treasurer, Ivan Brennessel, Reporter, and jack Stone, Sen- tinel. The Homemakers of Tomor- row had two main aims this year, preparation for their own careers and community service. They prepared a basket for a family at Thanksgiving and made Christmas favors for the Myers Community Hospital. Be- sides the faculty teas, the F. H. A., on, Mother's Day, prepared and served a dinner for their mothers and at a later date pre- pared a foreign meal for the en- tertainment of the A.F.S. ex- change students in Wayne Coun- ty. Their most impressive number was the Finale from the G Minor Symphony by Kalinnikov. They also marched in the Memorial Day parades in Sodus and Sodus Point. A new band called the Intermediate Band was organized this year. A stepping stone between the junior and Senior Bands, this band helps to determine whether or not a person is ready for the Senior Band. The junior Band has steadily grown this year. They had a very rewarding year. At Christmas 'they presented the traditional Feast of Lights. They participated in the Wayne County Chorus Festival and presented the annual Spring Concert. Three of the new numbers which they offered the public were Day of judgment, Oh Holy Lord, and Every Time. The Swing Choir is known throughout Sodus and the neighboring communities for its high level of entertaining music. Composed of musically talented students and faculty members, the choir sang for various church and community. organizations. This year they presented concerts for such organizations as the Williamson Parent-Teachers Association, The Wayne County Farm Bureau Association, and the Sodus Rotary Club, Another popular group is the Five Tones. They combine dramatic and vocal abilities to produce amusing and serious musical skits. They travel both with the Swing Choir and by themselves to present their programs. FIVE TONES S. Bissell, T.
