Crchestra Mnrir zvloirh gefztlier on the .rpirit liar Than fired eyelidr 1117011 tired eyef. TizNNYsoN. A few years ago, Miss Alice Shannon, our music supervisor, started the first orches- tra Sodus High School has had. Under her capable leadership, the orchestra has grown and increased in size as well as popularity. Each year a practically new orchestra has to be built up due to the fact that most of its participants graduate each year. If pupils would study instrumental music earlier in school, the above procedure would not be so difficult. This year, the orchestra has produced very fine results even though there are but four of last year's players with us at the present time. We have completed several selections. among which are: Fair zlflaid of Perth by Widdelg an overture, and Izzlernlezzo by George Bizet. Some of the important occasions at which the orchestra has played are the Senior Supper on December twenty-first, the Senior Play on November twenty-sixth and twenty- seventh and the Wziyne County Speaking Contest for girls. The saying is that what starts well usually finishes well. The orchestra started well and we have only to look at their record to see how they finished. At the annual Spring Music Festival the orchestra took a large part. They have also played in some assembly programs. So the orchestra has passed another year. Aiming at success, they have progressed a good share of that path. -T-al 28 lif-

Horns, trumpets, drums, cornets, trombones!! What a mixture of instruments! Yet, strangely enough, from that jumbled mixture comes a series of sweet, harmonious sounds. We are very proud of this active band which, under the direction of Mr. Glenn Waldorf, has played at fairs, band concerts and contests. The ofhcers of the band are: Preridenz .......................... HAROLD TURNER Vire-Pmridefzl ..... .... M ARHLON COLEMAN Secretary-Treflrlner' ........,...... CASTELLE DE HULLU Early in the year, September to be exact, the Sodus Band played at the Palmyra Fair. Inasmuch as that gave the school a half-day holiday, we will give three cheers for the band. All the people who were listening did too! During the fall and winter months, the band kept very busy. Every Tuesday afternoon until five ofclock, the band members spent their time preparing for the spring contest, the Finger Lakes Sectional Contest and the summer contests and conventions. The Spring Band Concert, that fabulous glory, was held on the evening of April thirtieth, in the auditorium of the High School. Those who attended the concert were very much impressed with the skill which the band has acquired this year. The Finger Lake Sectional Contest took place in Palmyra on the night of May third. We are pleased to say that some of the members played in the solo parts. Although they didn't win any prizes, we feel that the members of the band represented Sodus High School very favorably. The Band performed again on the evening of May sixth at a Chamber of Commerce banquet given in the school gymnasium. That evening was called Education Night in the Chamber of Commerce calendar and the band played to show the work of one phase of the music department. The Senior Class owes them a vote of thanks for playing so willingly at their Senior Supper which was given in December. The Band has been very successful this year and our only wish to them is that they may be just as successful, and even more so, next year. We are sure that this organiza- tion is very worth while and necessary to the school and we think any member would tell you that he is proud and honored to belong to such a talented group of young people. --'iii 27

Girls' Glee Club Murir ir the art of Proplaetr, the only nrt that mn calm lhe fzgitaliwzr of the fairly it ir one of the mort zzzagniffefll and delightful prerelztr God har given nr. LULNER. When sixty girls get together and sing, they really sing and make some pleasant music. If you don't believe us, just go and listen to the Sodus High School Girls' Glee Club. The Clubls participation in their two big public appearances, the operetta, Oh, Doc- tor! and the May Musical, held on May 29th, added a large link to their chain of successes this year. The response of the public to both of these events proved that both the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs are very popular and successful organizations. At the Musical 'the girls gave a fine rendition of these selections:-'lRain,', A Tiny Seed Became a Shrine, By the Bend of the River and l'Within a Dreaming Harbor. The glee club on December 21 sang Christmas carols after the Grade Operetta which was entitled Cinderella The girls were dressed in white dresses and carried red lighted candles. Some of the boys and the girls from the two Glee Clubs also put on a tableau of Christ's birth. The music was beautiful and the costumes and scenery made the tableau seem much more impressive. Everyone went home that night with a picture of the scenes of Christ's birth and the singing girls in their minds. The President of the Music Department was Floyd Philo. William Foley represented the entire Musical Organizations in the Student Council. Marion Yeomans was the secre- tary and treasurer of the Girls' Glee Club and Guy Burgess was Secretary and Treasurer of the Boys'. The members who completed two years of successful work in the club were awarded a pin at the end of the year. The shape of these pins was a music staff with S.H.S.G.C. on them. Through the efforts of their instructor, Miss Shannon, the Glee Club has gained its success. Without her willing help and guidance, the club could not have reached its high peak of perfection. eil 29 E+-
