What happy times at Sodus High! Yet through our hearts much sorrow rings. The sadness comes when we must leaveg Each to his chosen way must go, Each has his purpose to achieve, And into greater knowledge grow. But still our motto reads Success, So why be sorrowful today? Accomplishment brings happiness, And our success should make us gay. By MARTHA N. CAMP. '35 Class Song THE CLASS OF THIRTY-FIVE Four years ago we started here Determined to conquer life To fit ourselves for a career We began with toil and strife. When sophomores we were so wise Because our start was best Some left because of poor advice The rest of us stood the test. The junior year is cne of fun When we have climbed the hill And many of our tasks are done But we have won by will. The good old seniors are the best And folks will honor us For we have ended the greatest test We began and thought we must. CHORUS Cheer the class of thirty-tive From green frosh to seniors brave Now we are honored by Sodus High After those happy days. By MARTHA N. CAMP 1To the tune of Solomon Levi Class History On a sultry day in July the sun shone through the branches of the trees overhanging the river and fell upon the sleeping figures of two boys in overalls. The fishing poles were dangling in the water and a nibble startled Pete Turner who threw up his arms. Drawing in his line, he shouted to his sleeping friend, Jimmie Stone. Labor omnia vincitf' Jimmie roused from his dreams, brushed his hands over his eyes and said lazily, What? , I said, hollered Pete, oh, never mind. It's Latin and you won't know the meaning anyway. If you said Latin, you mean Miss Hospers. O, Boy, remember the tar mask of Miss Hospers that one of the students put on the back of the Freshman homeroom? Miss Hospers was the girls' Freshman Advisor, wasn't she? Yes, and Mr. Lewis was the boys','f answered Pete. Gee, those days seem far away but one thing we freshmen didn't have to undergo was initiation. We started that in our Sophomore year in the Class of 1936 Who were our Freshman officers? IDidn't we have a Freshmen party? asked Jimmie, rolling over on his stomach. One question at a time, big boy. Marion Yeomans was our President. I can't remem- ber the rest. Sure, we had a Freshman party. Don't you remember Marhlon dancing with the broom? I Wasn't Reginald President in our Sophomore year? I know Bernice Olney was Vice- President because I remember her and Fannie, our secretary, distributing the oranges we won-what did we win the oranges for? Anyway, I remember I had one orange. It was in the Junior year that our salutorian, Martha Patten, joined us, wasn't it? Pete, how come we had two secretaries. and Girls' advisors that year? asked Jimmie. I know, said Harold jumping up. i Vivian Griswold moved away so Reginald took his place and Miss Weatherlow left school so the girls elected Miss Dutcher. Gold old Benjie, whom we saw in Washington, was our advisor and Charles Fox, our senior Presi- dent, kept our moneyf, J Harold, what were our class colors? continued Jimmie, Sodus High School's re- nowned question-asker. ' Oh, Jimmie, don't you remember? Old Rose and Silver and they seemed to be the death of us. We used the Senior class's colors, green and gold, for our Junior Prom. Don't you remember how they asked us on class day if our colors weren't any good because we used theirs? We told them they were Dutch colors. We had a swell Prom with our Dutch scenery and little Dutch maids, ,Edith and Doris, serving the refreshments. We made money on it, too. And then, Jimmie, we entered our important Senior year. The girls elected Miss Andrews, as their advisor and us boys elected Mr. Rude as our advisor. Say, you were vice-president, weren't you? Who was secretary?,' gasped Jimmie. You ought to know. It's funny you would forget when it was Margaret Brown. And also for your information Betty Belden handled the money bags. Look, Pete, the sun is sinking. We've spentnso much time recalling past times that we haven't noticed the time. Let's go home. The two boys picked up their things, linked arms and started down the path singing, Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never bro't to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syneg We'll take a cup o'kindness yet For auld lang syne. So they departed with the notes of that song ringing through the forest. ll Jia..- Junior Class Once upon a time, there were some youngsters who, because they knew how to spell it and thought it seemed a great word, chose the name of a certain brand of milk for their class flower and designated such as a white CARNATION. Since these same kiddies had heard that a motto is in order in such a group, they chose Honor waits at labor's Gates. It so happened as a surprise to all, that these little folks struggled from one subject to another until they were no longer called kiddies but other names-various other names. Then on one great and ordinary day they became that part of the High School firm which does all the work, spends most time in the office, helps the weak but willing first year people, and is considered elegant, sophisticated and substantial by the Seniors-in other words, became the junior Class. Time alone, they say, can tell of greatness and since time is busy fleeting, it behooves this star reporter to relay to you the actions of this meek, modest, but powerful class. From the start the class showed intelligence by selecting Miss Greene and Mr. Thomas as advisors. Then to go with this gallant combination these officers were chosen: Preridefzr .....................,....... jAMEs MYERS lfice-Preridefzf ..., ........ W ILLIAM Fox Secretary ....... . , .ELIZABETH VAN HEE Trearnrev '.... ...................,... A LICE LOCKNER Next, because all dues were fnotj paid and just for a good start, a stupendous party was enjoyed by all. Soon a great spurt of energy and enthusiasm wrapped all of Sodus in wax paper which the juniors sold. Stopping at nothing, they showed the community some real talent when they produced their hit show-their only one and play of the season, ln an Airplane Passenger Station. It was miracu-lous to hear Lawrence Wiest in his airplane and see 'john Herman in his regalia. But read onw-the juniors gave a great garden party on june 7 and once more All ye community's Lads and Lassies tripped the light fantastic. And then feeling sorry for them and sorry about them, the great juniors joined the Great Seniors for a great picnic at Owasco Lake--Great Day! Continue readinga-read until you realize the athletic ability of these sons and daughters -how many of them made Varsity Teams Q Westie was even captainj and how the boys and girls each won the Intramural basketball Championship. And now ceaseArelax--the tale is over-fit's been a great year for the juniors but think of next! --+25 12 ls-- ' Sophomore Class Traditionally, sophomores are in-between peopleeneither lowly frosh nor sophisti- cated upper classmen. But be it modestly said, there is nothing btzlf-may about the class of 1937. It may be in between, but it has a distinct personality of its own. The form of government seemed to be matriarchal, for the offices of the class, with only one exception, were turned over to the fairer sex. The imposing list of female officials is hereby presented for inspection: Prefidezzf ,.......................,,. STE1.i.A BLEMLY Vitae-Premlezzf. . . ...... EDITH YoUNo Secretary ........................... DoRoTHY Kimus Treazi-wer .......,................,.. AILEHN INGISON The one exception was Donald Harris, who served as S. O. Representative for the first part of the year. Upon Don's resignation, Gerald Gallagher was elected to take his place. We understand that Gerald had things pretty much his own way, in spite of being so greatly outnumbered. fWomen sure fall for these guys that croonlj When Dorothy Kraus rose to the rank of a junior in january, Helen Van Heiten was entrusted with the secretaryship. Miss Newton and Mr. Arnott, as advisors, proved to be real friends and supporters of the class. When it came to planning the Initiation program for the freshmen, what Mr. Arnott couldn't think of, Miss Newton could! On November ninth, the sophomores gathered together in the gymnasium for a social night. Comical games were followed by card playing and several kinds of plain and fancy dancing. fMostly fancylj The high point of the year occurred during the week of March twelfth-Initiation Week. Did the freshmen suffer-and did the sophomores love it? For a week before the chapel Get Wise program, all the freshmen had to carry their books in market baskets, to which green bows were attached. They also carried open umbrellas to and from school. The boys looked charming in bracelets and earrings fRemember Bobbie Shaw?j, and the girls very sporty in neckties. Gaining position and prestige is very much like eating Crackerjack- The more you eat, the more you wantf' Having tasted the pleasure of rising to a point where they can look down on the frosh, the sophomores are anticipating their promotion to the rank of juniors where they can have two classes looking up to them. They will be satisfied, they say, if next year proves to be as enjoyable and profitable as this has been. -..ggi Eb..- l i at Freshmen The other day when we were walking down the hall, we saw Rita Duncan and Arland Wllite by one of the lockers, squeezing in a few precious seconds of conversation be- tween classes. Of course, we didn't mean to listen, fwe wouldnt do that for anythingj-- but Arland whispered so loud we couldn't help but hear him say, Rita, dear, why is your face so red? And Rita answered, Oli, Arland, I'm just blushing to think how green I've been all year! ln September, the Freshmen were green, indeed, in the eyes of the upper classmen but they have certainly learned the ways of Sodus High School so rapidly, that Rita and Arland may yet steal the honors away from Elnora and Fred. Although neither team was a winner, the boys had fun playing these games. The Freshmen Girls had a basketball team and they took second place. Freshmen, or rather Fresh Girls, aren't so green after all. The boys also had an indoor baseball team which played with the other inter-mural teams. On March twelfth, the Freshmen were initiated by the Sophomores. The President says it was very successful because they enjoyed doing the things set before them. fCould it be true that the Freshmen enjoy being slaves?J When june has rolled nearly all her days off the calendar, the Freshmen expect to cele- brate ending their hrst year with a picnic which has great quantities of food. They will discard their green cloak and put on the mantle of the jolly Sophomores. They certainly have a reason to rejoice. Not any of them will become embarrassed any more by such questions as Arland asked Rita. Because I-Iallowe'en was the first date on which the class could really justify a party, they waited until then, but made up for lost time on that occasion. Witli whom do you suppose the Eighth Grade enjoyed their Halloween Party? None other than the Freshmen. We can just imagine how dignified the Eighth Grade was! Qfior once in its lifelj And when Christmas rolled around, the class held another party. Sometimes the upper classmen wish they were in the grades again so that they could take part in these holiday parties! Of course, our neighboring high schools have heard of the Seventh and Eighth Grade Boys' Basketball Team. How did this happen, you may ask? Well, the team played the grade basketball teams of other schools and they made an illustrious name for themselves. They owe all their success to their manager, Mr. I-Ieise, who is also the class advisor. This spring Mr. Heise also organized a boys' baseball team of the Seventh and Eighth Grades combined. This team met with the same amount of success that the basketball team had. Can you feature an up-and-coming class without its own class song? The Eighth Grade couldn't, so at the beginning of the year a committee consisting of Clyde Turner, jacob Vanderbrook, Betty johnson and Mary jane johnson set to work and composed a very creditable class song. fbefore The classinj The Eighth Grade has a very good reason for wanting the last of june and the end of the school year to come. Picnics! Wlio does all this? If you go to Sodus High School, you know the answer: the Seventh Grade, of course. Always gathering for a social time! They surely know what fun is, but they know the meaning of activity, as well. Here are a few of the high spots of their calendar for the year: Bobbing for apples and consuming cider and doughnuts at the Halloween partyg Decorating a Christmas tree and playing Santa Claus to each other and to Miss Bonner, the class advisor, at the Christmas partyg and making a Valentine cake for Mr. and Mrs. Rude and delivering it to their home. QMiraculously enough, they ate it and lived to tell the tale.j The class has kept a scrap book of the class events including snapshots of members of the class and clippings from the paper. fIt's too bad we couldn't have some of those snapshots in the Soduskan. Sodus High School's Student Council is based upon, and works in accordance with, this famous principle of democracy that has been characteristic of America since the days of her courageous be- ginning. From every class and every club in the school, one representative is sent to the Student Organization, and it is his business to look after the interests of the group which he represents. In the case of our government, you see, an equal voice in the government is more than an ideal, it's a reality! The student body elects the ollicers of the Council annually. The President presides over Chapel in a most dignified UQ and authoritative manner. The Vice-President reads the announcements, he also looks up the biggest words he can find in the dictionary and stammers over them in his speech. Need we add that Reginald Proseus was president and Curtiss Gaylord, vice-president? George Burnett was secretary and Harold Turner kept the bulging, overflowing treasury in hand. Theres one thing we envy the representatives for, and that's being able to see Reg pound the gavel impressively on the desk to secure order in a S. O. meeting. Rumor has it that Reg rapped on the freshman representatives head by mistake one day, but we should hate to believe such a thing. Each year the organization gives a ticket to the students who pay their dues. This S. O. ticket enables the owner to gain admission to any athletic event at a reduced price. Another phase of the Student Council work is the Safety Patrol program, designed to insure the safety of the children in the lower grades. This year the Council again super- vised the work and appointed high school boys, by a weekly schedule to stand at the intersections at the noon and afternoon dismissals and to see that cars driving by waited until the children had crossed. This program is really worthwhile, and the Student Coun- cil deserves a great deal of credit for its management. Other things which this Student governing body has accomplished during the year are: the planning of the weekly chapel programs, the distribution of awards for sports, music, and the school publications, to be made at the end of the year, the promotion of the cheerleading program, and the organization of a subscription drive for the Soduskan, which helped to raise the total subscriptions over the number set for the desired goal. Could the members of the Student body work together so elhciently and harmoniously as they do without the help of the Student Council? We think not. As long as Sodus High School exists and operates to the advantage of every pupil, the Student Council cannot outlive its usefulness. -tl 17 lse- l l Soduskan Dere S!eu'de11.re.' This honor was given to us because of the neatness of the paper and arrangement of the material. Perhaps these two major points were brought about by the printing which we did ourselves. Last September for financial and instructive rea- sons, we decided to do the printing at school. For three or four hours on Saturday mornings, the members of the staff worked at the school and all helped to get the paper ready to be sold on the following Tuesday. We shall never forget how the punchers hurt our hands! We have endeavored to publish an issue of the paper every month but in order to conserve time and money, we printed only six issues, each issue with more than twenty pages. We introduced a new feature into this year's Scroll and that was the Exchange Column. It is really beneficial and advantageous to us to read other papers because we become acquainted with new ideas and we profit by the mistakes found in the paper. Along with the printing of the news, we used our artists to draw cartoons and cover designs. And did we have some snappy ads and cartoons!! GORDON CLAUS The purpose of this club is to learn about France, the French people and the customs so as to further the interest and understanding in the French language. The club supplements our reading in the foreign language and provides a background for our comprehension of French manners and modes of living. The projects and activi- ties of the club broaden and enrich our class work so that we have a stimulus always to get our lessons done. fThis does not work in all cases.j But because the club members are interested in having a good time besides learning about French customs, they indulge in some social activities. In December, the club had a party at which the members played French games and exchanged Christmas gifts. QThere was an elephant iight, I believe., Our appetites were large but our pocketbooks were small so we had to be satisfied with lemonade and cookies. However, we could have eaten much more. As a club project, a magazine, illustrating social, cultural, governmental and educa- tional activities in France, was made. Pictures of France and French advertisements were cut from magazines and newspapers and pasted on sheets of colored paper which were bound together in the form of a booklet. The members have done several French crossword puzzles. The race is on, A six letter word, a two letter word, the pencils fly, the cry, 'Tm iinishedi' and the puzzle is done. Fun? Pardon us, but we were somewhat confused, although pleasantly surprised, by the various displays about the room. Goldlish, plants, flowers, bulletin boards, and posters have all contributed to make the Library a most attractive place this year-in fact, so attractive that we haven't minded studying there at all. fWell, not much, anywayij Miss Newton came this year as a full time librarian and is responsible for these in- novations and for forming the Library Club. This year the club has been taking charge of arranging books correctly, rebinding books and making an attractive display for the bulletin board in the library. That's probably why winter, spring and autumn each frolicked there for a while. The club members have also taken charge of the library and have classified the books and picture files. Each member has been assigned to each of these duties sometime during the year. Although the bookworms are, for the most part, interested in reading and taking care of the library, they sometimes take time out to be sociable and to eat refreshments. Even booklovers crave food. A highspot of the year's social activities occurred on the evening of March 26 when members of the club met in the Home Economics Room for SUPpCl'. Elizabeth Van Hee, as president, Frances Mayeu, as vice-presidentg and Wilma Seager, as secretary and treasurer, have made a great success of the club. A prize was given to Rollie Richardson for the best letter. This letter was written to a company, advertising wives for twenty-five dollars. He wanted to buy a lady who was dressed in a green coat and blue hat. A mock auction was held at another meeting. Because of his ability as a salesman, Rollie acted as auctioneer and was so successful in hammering his mallet and yelling Going, Going, Gone, that he disposed of a great number of erasers, books and chalk. The Club discussed the topic, lf I were an Employer, what would I expect of my Em- ployees? After many ideas had been proposed, Miss Stone related some of her pleasant experiences in an office and gave some practical suggestions. After a keen discussion, the members enjoyed a party in the Gymnasium, with supper served in the Home Economics Room. At the May meeting, projects for the school exhibit were presented and worked upon. These projects consisted of a poster with an attractive arrangement of bulletins for com- mercial colleges and business schools, pictures made with shorthand outlines and a story of Mr. Gregg, the founder of shorthand. Can business and a grand time be combined? The Commercial Club will vote YES any day in the week! -. 23 i l e H Handicraft Club Are your nerves steady enough to balance a teacup at a faculty party? The Handicraft girls can accomplish this feat. They proved it at their May tea party when with the Home Economics classes they entertained their mothers and the faculty. Do you know what smores are? Parties and picnics aren't their only accomplishments, If you want a block-printed luncheon cloth, or favors for a party, or candy for a sale, call on a Handicraft girl and you will be given full details. There are nineteen members in the club represented by the following officers: President, Leo Fletcher, Vice-President, Raymond Cole, Secretary, Charles Burnette, Treasurer, Robert Baker, Reporter, Amiel Vandeveldeg Advisor, C. A. Lewis. The 4H Club members held an exhibit in the fall in the High School at which 4H Club work from all the Clubs in the district was shown. This included handicraft and produce grown by the members in their projects. The Sodus Club earned their share of the prizes and joined in the fall rally achievement meeting at which Mr. Hein Zleman, assistant State 4H Club leader, presided. The boys also took part in the exhibits and 4H Club Program at the Palmyra Fair. In this event, the Sodus boys also proved their ability, earning several prizes. During the year, the boys have practiced knot tying and rope splicing, studied the rules of parliamentary practice and have carried on their meetings in a business like way. They organized a soft ball team with Charles Burnette as manager and have had some exciting games with neighboring 4H Club teams. Each of the members is carrying on a project on his farm during the summer and plans to grow quality products to show at the Fair this fall. He will keep a business-like record of his activities and will gain experience so that he can carry out his motto, Make the Best Better, and develop his projects into a real profitable business. The 4H Club of the school sent delegates to several of the other 4H Club meetings and is trying to develop the spirit of working together in a cooperative way to promote the interests of the club. During the summer the members will form a tour and visit the projects of the other members. They learn by doing and profit by the experience of working together and benefiting by the work of each other. Every Tuesday afternoon until five ofclock, the band members spent their time preparing for the spring contest, the Finger Lakes Sectional Contest and the summer contests and conventions. The Spring Band Concert, that fabulous glory, was held on the evening of April thirtieth, in the auditorium of the High School. Those who attended the concert were very much impressed with the skill which the band has acquired this year. The Finger Lake Sectional Contest took place in Palmyra on the night of May third. We are pleased to say that some of the members played in the solo parts. Although they didn't win any prizes, we feel that the members of the band represented Sodus High School very favorably. The Band performed again on the evening of May sixth at a Chamber of Commerce banquet given in the school gymnasium. That evening was called Education Night in the Chamber of Commerce calendar and the band played to show the work of one phase of the music department. The Senior Class owes them a vote of thanks for playing so willingly at their Senior Supper which was given in December. TizNNYsoN. A few years ago, Miss Alice Shannon, our music supervisor, started the first orches- tra Sodus High School has had. Under her capable leadership, the orchestra has grown and increased in size as well as popularity. Each year a practically new orchestra has to be built up due to the fact that most of its participants graduate each year. If pupils would study instrumental music earlier in school, the above procedure would not be so difficult. This year, the orchestra has produced very fine results even though there are but four of last year's players with us at the present time. We have completed several selections. among which are: Fair zlflaid of Perth by Widdelg an overture, and Izzlernlezzo by George Bizet. Some of the important occasions at which the orchestra has played are the Senior Supper on December twenty-first, the Senior Play on November twenty-sixth and twenty- seventh and the Wziyne County Speaking Contest for girls. The saying is that what starts well usually finishes well. The orchestra started well and we have only to look at their record to see how they finished. At the annual Spring Music Festival the orchestra took a large part. They have also played in some assembly programs. So the orchestra has passed another year. Through the efforts of their instructor, Miss Shannon, the Glee Club has gained its success. Without her willing help and guidance, the club could not have reached its high peak of perfection. eil 29 E+- Boys' Glee Club H1l'lll.l'ft' whirl' geullier on Ike .rpirit lief Timn fired eyelitlr llflllll fired eye.r. After Easter, the club welcomed two new members, XXfilliam lfoley and Marhlon Coleman. The Boys' Club gave their share to the furtherance of the success of the OPCFCIIH, Oh, Doctor! by lending their members to be ranchers, doctors, conspirators and robbers. At the May Musical, the club had the opportunity to show to the audience what a year's time of work and practicing can do for the development and improvement of a group of people studying music. Their numbers which were pleasantly received were The llwlmle. Three fm' flick. Slap Dat ll lvimf2ef'i11'. The mixed chorus, the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs combined, sang these numbers-Goin' Home and O11 llve Levee. The mixed Chorus sang these selections in the musical assembly program which took place on Friday, May 24th. The Boys' Glee Club gave their individual numbers in addition to those given by the Girls' Glee Club. The boys feel that they have accomplished a great deal this year and we certainly agree with them. They are certain that they owe all their success to their director, Miss Shannon. We hope that they have as successful a year next year as they had this last year. Girls' Octette Eight white dresses in a row-Eight pretty faces smiling at the audience-That's the octette. These famous girls have toured the entire New York State, so it seems. They have sung at two Chamber of Commerce meetings, several different schools in Wayne County, the Finger Lakes State Teachers' Conference and the Music Festival at LeRoy. The octette was said to have been one of the best music groups of the smaller schools. After they have been to so many large places, we feel honored to have them sing to us as well as to claim them as Our Octette. They sing both popular and classical songs. Shadow March and Little Papoose are their two favorites. The melodious voices cast a charm upon the audience which sits as though fascinated and gives a huge sigh of disappointment when the voices cease. Oh, famous group of Sodus High, we wish you well through all the years. Boys' Quartet Four handsome young men standing in a row with their mouths wide open! What are they doing? Catching flies? Oh, of course, singing! Those boys are the Sodus High School Quartet which consists of Curtiss Gaylord, Raymond DeWolf, Floyd Philo and our star, Gerald Gallagher. Miss Shannon directs them, of course. Everyone that attended the Wayne County Speaking Contest heard these boys sing Shorten' Bread- Put on the skillet -you know how they do it. Were you there? - That's not a question requiring an answer from you but the name of one of their songs. You didn't know the boys have taken to farming, did you? Whether they have or not they sing Pastoral, The boys also sang at the Finger Lake State Teachers' Conference, the Music Festival at LeRoy and the Chamber of Commerce. If you haven't heard Gerald Gallagher sing Solitude you've been missing a great deal. Let's cheer for the boys as they sing for us. You'll have to cheer very loud and fer- vently in order to make yourself heard, for those Quartetters have real volume. - 5f31l'3 - Dance Club The Dance Club has obtained a great list of accomplishments this year. The members, including such stars as Louise Pearce, Odessa Boise, Marian Lawrence, Virginia Atkinson, Alice Lockner and Virginia Thayer, have mastered the steps in folk, tap, ballet and ball- room dancing. Some day, we expect that they will be future Follies girls. In September, about ninety girls turned out to the Dance Club meetings. After Thanks- giving, Miss Greene had try-outs to decide a smaller group for a real club. Thirty girls passed the test. Election of officers was then held and the places of honor were given to the following girls: Prerideuf ....... ...... A uciz LOCKNIER Vive-Pi-e.fide11t ...... ..... E LIZABIETH VAN I-Iisif Secrelary-Treai'l11'er' ............... MARY JANE JOHNSON Members of the club have learned numerous dances, as a group, and some individual dances. Some very enjoyable parties have been held during the year, through Miss Greene's work and planning. Eight girls from our club participated in the operetta dances and much credit is due to them. On june first a dance recital was held in the gymnasium to which all the mothers were invited. Group dancing and individual danc- ing constituted the program. Afterwards, refreshments were enjoyed by all. We take off our hats to the dancers, but we would all like to present a few banquets to Miss Greene. She has worked very diligently all year trying to make good this new club. The members have benefited much from her teachings and they have her to thank for their success. It is a very simple thing to distinguish the members of this club. Whenever they walk through the halls, we can spot them right away because their graceful bodies just seem to float in the air. We hope that their dancing will not make them so light and airy that they will suddenly rise from the ground and leave us. -..jx Hy... Sports Club And there suddenly appeared in our midst a new, enthusiastic, and energetic group terming themselves the Sports Club. Although the Club did not get started until after Easter, it set to work making up for lost time soon afterward and tried to crowd in a great deal of activity before school ended in june. This Club came about in a very ordinary way one day when a group of girls said they would like to go roller skating. So lo and behold that same group-after robbing young- sters of roller skates-spent a most enjoyable evening in falling and stumbling and skat- ing a bit on these pieces of iron fastened to four wheels. This is a purely leisure time activity and has no olicers and no dues-a fact which may help account for the forty members. The date of a meeting is planned by the girls' deciding just when the majority will have the time and that free time becomes the date. There are two more outstanding events yet to be held this year. One is to be a plain hike on foot, and the other is to be a bicycle hike.-so beware ye bicycle owners in Sodusl Miss Greene has lent her enthusiasm and energy to this group, and the members couldn't help but catch some of her spirit. No wonder it's called a Sports Club if she is its leader! Another year the Club will start in October and thereby have time for many more meetings-that is, if some leisure time occurs! Although the youngest organization in school it is very popular and very ambitious and so we say, So long until next year and if you aren't a member be a sport and come to Sports Club. Girls' Basketball The girl's basketball team completed a most successful season, winning six and losing six games. Under the coaching of Miss Greene, the team rapidly improved as the season neared its end. Starting practice late in October with twenty candidates, the squad remained the same the entire season. Due to Sodus' not having a very representative team last year, no one of the girls had ever played inter-scholastic basketball and thus confidence and morale had to be gained as well as the game techniques. After the games, the home team provided delicious suppers for visitors and finished the evening in social activity. Wlien Sodus entertained, the squad donated the food and then the varsity did the clean-up work since the others prepared the meal. This, as well as playing the two-court type of game, was a new experience for the girls this season and proved very enjoyable from all angles. The parties were the highlight of the basket- ball season for this social contact promoted the finest in sportsmanship and gave girls opportunities for making new friends in the various High Schools in the county. Martha Lucas and Louise Palmer are playing the doubles. Since spring weather has made the scheduled out-door practices irregular, the girls have had to spend much time in the gymnasium which has not been too effective in their gaining skill. Because this is so often true of spring conditions, it is hoped that tennis matches can be arranged in the fall next year. This will give the girls time to improve during the summer and should be a great factor in making their matches more interest- ing as well as being able to more nearly complete the schedule since so many matches have had to be cancelled this year. Sodus played two tie games with this team and it looks as if we would have to wait until next year before we decide who has the better team. The team next played Williamson and lost 4-2 in a hard fought game. Sodus began to show some improvement. The remaining four games played were won or tied. Sodus beat North Rose 5-35 Marion, 4-Og tied Wolcott 1-1 and beat Williamson, 3-1. The last game was sweet revenge for the Sodus booters. Williamson was claiming the cham- pionship all by itself until Sodus paid them a visit. As the schedule ended, Williamson and Wolcott were tied for first place with Sodus in second place. Charles Miller and Edward Mills were given a place on the All County Soccer team. Since only a few had ever played before, the first task was to learn the fundamentals of basketball and then use them to their best advantage. Game experience was lacking in most of the play- ers. Charles Millet, the high scoring center of the team, Guy Burgess, and George De Brine had seen league competition the previous year, while the others were newcomers in the game. Gordon Claus, Lawrence Wiest, captain, and Harold Turner proved to be good players before the season ended. Guy Burgess, Donald Harris, and George De Brine were the strongest defensive men on the team. Richard Hulzing broke into the game later in the season to make himself a valuable player on the team. The team's record of victories and losses does not tell the true story of the ability of the players. Many games were lost by only a few points. The added punch that comes from experience was lacking but next year things should be different. Rodman Ludwig, with Edwin Walbourne as his assistant, did a very fine job of man- aging the team. Witli tlIe loss of George Bodine, last year's ace righthand pitcher, a capable successor has not been found. ln the first League game of tlIe season, Clyde defeated Sodus, nine to three at the Clyde held. After more practice and more experience, a much better showing of the team is ex pected. Lyons beat Sodus 9-2 the following week. Harris allowed thirteen hits but most of the runs were unearned because of so many errors. C. Miller made three hits at three times at bat, lt was the first game of the season that he had reached his old time form. Newark also proved too strong for the Sodus team.
