W' W M' '17 THENIE 3 Two views-Senior gl Frosh As the close of my high school career draws near, I look at my experience in two ways. The first thing I see is that high school isn't the conversable jocosity that its facade suggests. Secondly, I feel that in spite of this, it was of some avail. When I arrived on the high school scene I was over- whelmed by its complexities. I felt insignificant and unfit among the great athletes and club members. I was frightened by the enthusiasm of these people. But I said, so what, and decided to give it a try. I didn't believe it. I survived my freshmen year and played three sport with so much spirit that I had trouble finding places to keep it. Thinking I had attained the ultimate in high school existence, Istarted my sophomore year. But then it happened. Nly test scores started to fall and, gasp, I began to miss homework assignments. Due to my terrible adversity, I was forced to quit sports and give up part of my spirit. The next two and a half years were living hell. I actually had to stay up late and work to get decent grades. Had it not been for weekends, I might have gone insane. Naturally, I was disappointed. I had ex- pected a good time and all I got was countless nights of mental anguish. However, asI look into the future, I see that high school has paid me an unexpected dividend. All those long nights weren't enough, and weren't spent in vain . . . I actually learned something! Even though all my dreams didn't come true, I gained knowledge. It will accompany me whereverI go and I'IeeOll6SS to Say, it will be useful. With this in mind,I look back at my. high school days and say, It was worth it. Rob Reipel Class of 1977 4 v1E ws The Freshmen Class of Snowflake High School has some comments as to their feelings towards their first year of upper education. I guess I've changed a lot too this year, like, now I have different values, different needs, different wants . . . I've met a lot of new peopIe. tAnnie Diehll I felt terrible when school started, because the Seniors Seniors were mean. They said, 'Get out of my way.' It was also hard because I couldn't find any of my classes. I didn't really like school then. tJonni Neffl The first week was like a bad storm that hit without knowing. I felt like everybody was staring at me and staring at every little mistake I made. tAlta Begayel I thought it was going to be scary, but it wasn't. tBill Nluderl It has been hard . . . When I become a Senior I will pick on Freshmen. fLoretta lVlcCray7 To me your Freshmen and Sophomore years are your learning years. You learn and grow in these years more more than any other. Uanet Parrackl I feel more at ease. I know more about human nature . . . better campus and more freedom kindof help. fDale Tigertl g g g I think that I have become a more 'mature person. Eleanor Gilroy. She is a great asset to the drama department for she has helped greatly in the making of costumes for school plays and musicals. Also, she has helped with fashion shows for the school and the Women's Club. Her talent with costuming has been highly recognized, for she is a member of the Uniform Committee of Snowflake High School. Nlrs. Gilroy is indeed a great asset to her community. She has taught night extension classes for Eastern Arizona College and Northland Pioneer College. She is a natural born instructor. Going one step further to help others, must be her motto, for she is a special help here at the high school. She has helped out at many school functions like F.H.A, COED, Prom, Etc. She is the sponsor of the Student Counsel and has worked with the F.H.A. Although most of her work is with females, she even went overboard to help the men. She started the Bachelor Survival Classes for any young man eager to learn the food and clothes facts of life. Lastly, her respect for her God is noted in her active participation in the Roman Catholic Church. She has been active with the youth there, as well as at school. Nlrs. Gilroy, your love and respect that you have shown us is more than we can repay. What we could give to you would only be a murmur compared to what you have given us. For your concern for us, we again dedicate this book to you. With love and respect . . . The Students of Snowflake High School. A great person ',, W tt DEDICATION 5 A . The worst thing about the season was that out of nine games played, 6 were away and only 3 were at home. Hopefully, next year fans will not have to travel all over the State to see a game. The lst game was against the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets. The 10-0 win was attributed to tough defense and a lot of desire. Our first home game was against the Show Low Cougars, which as usual was no contest. The Lobos won easily 55-12. Although the 46-14 Round Valley score looked like a push over for the Lobos, it was a great effort by all members of the team when it was needed. Superior was the next game, and the Lobos were really glad to come out of it with a win. They won it by the seat of their pants 7-O in the rain, Next was another away game with the Lobos going to Kingman. The Lobos upset the Bulldogs at their Home- coming 37-0. The win was a great team effort with outstanding performance by Brian Aldridge, who scored 5 TD's. The lst loss came as a heartbreaker against the Flagstaff Eagles. The Lobos went in at the 1st half leading 23-7. The Eagles came out in the 2nd half, tn' -W 'MA Q Y W7 ' - lr M ,,,, , ,L ,l,,. -I iv . e- ,A 3,4 u - 4 . Rob Leistiko, Livinston Nez, Tom Yazzie fired up, and beat the Lobos 24-23. The officiating was poor and the Eagles won it by sheer luck only. The next game was to decide if the Lobos had a chance of going to the State playoffs. It was Winslow at Winslow. Poor weather proved to be the key factor of the game as the Lobos couldn't get their running or passing game going. The Bulldogs were the largest team in the conference and they beat the Lobos 20-7, However, it was a close game until the 4th quarter when the Lobos defense let up and the Bulldogs put their offense together, The Lobos decided to get back on the winning foot again by beating the Coconino Panthers for the schools Home- coming 25-14, RSITY FOOTBALL , 1 I 1 , .. 7 , --1, '. f Q. The Snowflake Varsity Basketball team showed great courage and poise this year by sticking out the whole season without quitting. I think all should be com- mended for this fine effort. The teams finer points of the year were beating Flagstaff 3 out of 4 times. However, this was still over-shadowed by the newly established record of the Varsity Wrestling team losing to Showlow. The Varsity BB team tied this record, late in the season, by losing to the Cougars at Showlow. Despite threats made to the players, all survived the season. A to .. srssr ' L NI. Thompson J. Coleman WREST LING 27 The average day of a Snowflake High School wrestler begins at about six 'o clock, with a noisy alarm trying to get through to a tired mind. Little or no breakfast is very common to most wrestlers, since most are usually over weight. While trying to wake up he finds what he will wear to school that day and gets dressed. Next is the agravating task of starting his car or truck, which during wrestling months is quite often frozen throughout. Even after a wrestler gets his car started and gets to school, he often finds that the does get there. He also finds that the coaches car didn't start and he's stuck out in the cold until the coach does not get there. Finally the coach drives up to the school, and opens the gym door. Have you ever tried to slip into a frozen, sweat soaked, practice uniform? I promise if a person isn't awake by now he will be before he gets that thing on. And I can't understand why someone doesn't leave the heater on in the wrestling room either. The mat's are practically as hard as the gym floor, the heater takes ten minutes to get going, and then another twenty to get the room warm. After practice, wrestlers have about five or ten minutes to shower and they are consequently caught combing out the tangles in their wet hair when the bell rings. Then when he dashes in thirty seconds be- fore the tardy bell, the teacher usually makes some crack about the way he presents himself in public. A dedicated wrestler simply has to swallow his pride and let it slide by, because to get on the bad side of the teacher could mean having to give up wrestling, the next time report cards came out. Through out the day it is fairly easy to pick out the wrestlers while walking through the hall. They are the ones with no color left, that just stare into space as they walk by, or lean on strong girlfriends or lockers. If a wrestler doesn't seem as friendly as he did before he started wrestling, one should try and understand that he probably can't hear you, nor because he's ignoring people, but because his concentration is almost constant and is very deep. Wrestlers are not only tired from hard practice and little food, but also from restless sleep, as hyperten- tion often keeps him from a good night rest. Teacher's can't pay as much attention on class as previously, before he or she lables the student as lazy or irrespon- sible, and almost naturally grades drop after the sec- ond term. A wrestler goes through the day doing the best he can in classes, and the brave ones even try and maintain a good position on the social scale. After school a wrestler prepares mentally for total exhaustion and fatigue while dressing out. The method of this preparation could be deceiving to someone not familar with what is soon to come. This method is the last laughter before death, and comes about through, for the want of a better word, horseplay. From ninety,-eight pound freshman to a two-hundred twenty- five pound heavy weight, wrestlers share a common bond. This is expressed throughout an occasion slap on a bare nonvital part of the body to the spreading of heat balm in a very vital piece of under clothing. But all good things must come to an end, and so to with this fun. For after about ten minutes in the hot wrestling room, people begin to sense the seriousness of the situation, and the fun really begins. Dedicated coaches have planned and schemed all day, how they can most effectively get their boys in shape in the least amount of time, and even though in a little pain to make them tough. After about an hour with the heater going constantly and approximately forty bodies bodies panting violently, the oxygen is simply used up. ik K Q Y is Sports and games I 2 si V ,T ,,,,, V,Vk W I A ,AL ,, . fg . ., , 1 5 Wa V , V LV 1 , ,,,1 L VhE ,iVl:V A-nA ff' 'W Q : i 'H CANDIDS 29 Bottom Cheers Kewl or , wg ,AAV The Mat Maids tried their best to promote Spirit and enthusiasm throughout the wrestling season. During the season they encouraged the wrestling team by making posters and signs for spirit, throw- ing parties, and cheering the team on to Victory. If ever the team was down, the Mat Maids were al- ways there to back them up. With all the long hours of selling honey, planning assemblies, and prac- ticing cheers, they felt it was a very successful and fun year and was well worth their time, f' 'H' K ev.: Q in 1 X it H 3 Linda Lee, LouAnn Johnson, Sherri Palmer, Nancy Hatch, Sherri Brewer, Lisa Click Miss Thompson Advisor ,N ,Y J, X i , , ,...XN ,l V Ql lr N i 30 MAT MAIDS ,iz gf, X M V f 5 , , ,ya A Linda Lee, LouAnn Johnson, Sherri Palmer, Nancy Hatch, Sherri Brewer, Lisa Click Lb 'E Linda Lee LouAnn Johnson .0- 414,427 A ii Q, Nl 19,-9' Sherri Brewer Lisa Click Y' 1 1' fi, fl , .WW Q E li? The primary function of student council is to keep the Snowflake High School student in- formed as to the happenings of the school. Student Council meets once a week under the direction of its president and under the spon- sorship of its advisor, Mrs. Gilroy. Decisions made by the council are then sent to the administration for their approval. If approved, an activity is granted to the asking organiza- tion. Thus, by following this process, an organization or student may be heard. STUDENT COUNCIL 65 Neff, Karen Parrack, Elaine Call, Lori Call, Nlrs. Active Active! Active! Active! FHA has been busy earning money this year towards the convention in April. We started off the year with a slum ber party to get the new members interested and to plan money raisers. We made and raffled off a football quilt and sold Val-a-grams for Valentines Day. The FHA and FFA went together on the float. It was a volkswagon con- verted to a top hat. It did not turn out quite like we expected but it was fun. For Christmas we invited the FFA to our Christmas party and they invited our officers to their annual officers fondue party. Finally the state convention came around. Our annual mothe daughter banquet and installation of officers finished up our year. Y What's new with the FFA? This year they tried a few activities with the FHA. For Homecoming the two clubs worked together on a float for the parade. For Christmas the FHA invited the FFA to their Christmas party and in return the FFA invited the FHA officers to their party. They planned to have the FHA work with them on the Sweetheart dance, but that fell through. Last fall the FFA went to the State Fair and attended the Arizona National Livestock Show. Over the year they attended several field days. Only one activity request was passed, but the members forgot about it until it was too late to do anything. The Club alS0 made a tape for the time capsule. GIRL'S CHORUS 81 Members Lisa Click, Mark Rogers, Phillip Langston, Terri Whyman, Janette Shumway, Margret Brinkerhoff, Reid Rogers, Bev Sherman, Gayle Shumway, Dallas Peterson Jill Brewer, Nora Bigler, Alan Dewitt, Mike Cole, I've thought for weeks on what to put in this square space, but what can you say about something that means so much? Accomplishments? Well, there was the privilege of singing for Dr. Charles Hirt at Madrigal Festival in Flagstaff, and the superior ratings at solo and ensemble at Flagstaff, and the large group at Thatcher. No, I'd guess I'd have to say the greatest accomplishment of the Madrigal was the unique opportunity for 21 students and 1 special teacher to learn and grow together. We strived to overlook the faults and mistakes, yet behind each of them we found some- thing extra that made them worthwhile. We had our share of bad times, but through the good times we discovered that music has a beautiful power . . . the power to bring people closer to each other. We found that by lending ourselves to the music, the music could in turn serve us. Through music we could made ourselves just a little bit better than we really are. Terri Whyman 2 'Q 1 2 54 NOV 7 S? The stage is brightly lit and the sound of voices can be heard laughing and talking. The sounds subside and all listen to the speaker and to his memo- ries of times, times that they were once part of. Using time is the important thing . . . time cannot be stored for it goes on and on, waiting for no man. We are but minutes, little things,l each one furnished with sixty wingslwith which we fly on our unseen trackland not one of us ever comes back. Yes, time is our most precious commodity. To use it know your selves, learn to wait, and live in the present. lexerpts from a speech given by Rob ReipelJ Applause, The crowd murmurs and the graduates receive their diplomas to the flash of cameras to cheers. 94 GRADUATION Ttslfl 4, iff ww, qw ? all A A 3 E , ..
