Led by co-captains Jeff Adler and Jon Pilkington, the Sentinels fought their way to a victorious season. Losing only two league games. The game against Lincoln would come to decide the class BB title. The relentless play of All- Stater Tom Bennett just wasn ' t enough to hold back Lincoln. The season would never have been a success if it wasn ' t for the superb coaching of Jim Dunn, and assis¬ tant Tom Burhough, the solid play of seniors, J. Pilkington, J. Hart, S. Potter, S. Jarvis, K. Porter, F. Da- vey, S. Bernardi: all division choices T. Gerlach, B. DiMuccio, J. Adler, and T. Bennett contribut¬ ed to a surprisingly successful season. S.H.S. Boys ' Cross Country The 1982 X-Country season was an unqualified success in the opinion of coach Joe Bennett. We had runners committed to improving their performances and to contributing to the suc¬ cess of the team. While the con¬ crete highlights of the season were the naming of Dave Paren- teau, to the 1st. team All-Class, and, Mike McMaugh ' s All-Class Honorable Mention, the true measure of achievement is the fact that everyone improved consistently during the season. Dave Bogus scored a major tri¬ umph with his 4th. place finish in the O.L.P. freshman invitational. Captains Joe D ' Agostino, Mike McMaugh, and Bill Bennett, will be missed. However with outstand¬ ing runners, Parenteau, Bogus, Bis- sett, Campbell, Clark, Gallagher, Linehan, and Martin returning, next fall looks promising. The 1981 Cross-Country Team Captain Joe D ' Agostino, and Coach Joe Bennett Senior runners Joe D ' Agostino, Mike McMaugh, and Bill Bennett 82 83 Girls ' Cross Country With only five returning veter¬ ans, the season may have been bleak if it were not for the top group of freshmen runners ever produced at Smithfield. The team took its first Northern Division Championship ever, and added the Class B Title as well. A 3rd. place finish in the State Meet, and a 7th place finish in the New Englands concluded a successful ' 8f season. Senior Cindy Roan, and junior Donna Brown were selected to the 2nd team All-State and 1st team All-Div. squads. Joined by junior W. lannuzzi and freshman J. Allen, who were also voted to the All-Div team. Losing co-capts. Cindy Roan, and Linda Catuogno, and fielding eight freshmen this season, makes the future look bright for the female Sentinels. Lynn Charron, Debbie Hardman, and Cheryl Hawkins as tri-capt. led this dedicated and truly skilled varsity team to many ex¬ citing games. Michaela Walsh, Deb¬ bie Hardman, and Theresa Schlem- mer were chosen for the first team All-Div., while Kira Provost was select¬ ed to the 2nd team All-Div. Without your team being one of the play-off teams it is very difficult to become acknowledged as a good field hock¬ ey player in this state. Sue Szylin, Mi¬ chelle Buteau, Rachel Bridgehouse, Lyn Banville and Lori Catuogno made up the remainder of the squad all of which turned out super perfor¬ mances the entire season! However, with the skill and improvement that has been achieved by the j.v. team, many of them will see a great deal of varsity play for the 1982 year. Seniors Bob DiMuccio and Frank Davey both held outstanding seasons for the Sentinels. Both were all-league and all-star selections and Bob DiMuccio was also a first team all-state selection and second team all- New England selection. Also selected for all league was fresh¬ man Chris Davey. Also making a fine contribution to the team were seniors T. DeCotis, D. Placido, T. Geremia, and juniors L. LePere, S. Geremia, and juniors L. Their series of losses was attributed to the fact that a young freshman team with not very much experience in league competition compared to other division teams. The potential of freshmen Elizabeth Roberts, Dawn Cattelle, and Lynn Chevoya will be of major importance in creating a strong team in the future years. Captain Michelle Harnois Oopsl Perfection! Not sol says. Coach Benoit. Take into consideration the fact that the Sentinels suffered a complete wipeout of first string¬ ers except this year ' s Captain, and only Senior Bill Bennett, the odds were the Sentinels would finish the season in last place- they proved the critics wrong again. There were bright aspects for the basketball season such as Billy Bennett who was an out¬ standing performer throughout the year. Other strong points the team had were overall quickness and ballhandling. Coach Benoit also praised the boys for their sportsmanship, patience and their fine team play. Lynn Charron, an outstanding all around player, who dislocated her shoulder in December and was out for the season. Some promising notes for the future include: most of the start¬ ers are only sophomores and one was a 9th grader. The team ' s leading scoreer and rebounder, Kathy Fugere, is only a sopho¬ more, the J.V. I hope Anvil ' 82 brings back many happy memories and a lot of laughs. Also special thanks to Kathy Reilly, Judy Lanfredi, Sue O ' Neil, Nancy MacDonald, and Carol Brodeur for all their hard work in making our yearbook a success. I hope you enjoy this yearbook as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Cheryl Hawkins Editor An Advisor ' s Afterword . . .
