Coach Jim Dunn and the Sentinels hammered their way to the Class B-Large Championship and the Schoolboy Superbowl. Early losses to N. Smithfield in the Injury Fund Game and to St. Ray’s in the season opener were forgotten as the Sentinels marched over their next five opponents by a combined score of 145 to 0. On Oct. 27 they found themselves facing undefeated Lincoln High in a showdown for the championship. Leading scorer and co-captain David LaFazia led the Senti¬ nels with a touchdown and over 100 yards in rushing. The offense played with preci¬ sion and the defense with raw emotion and the Sentinels upset the Lions 15-6 in the most important game ever played at Smithfield High. Smithfield then defeated their next three opponents, including a 6-0 win in the an¬ nual Thanksgiving Day Game with N. Providence. The Sentinels faced the Warren Redskins in a bid for the Class B Title in the R. I. Superbowl but were defeated, thus end¬ ing their nine game winning streak. Players honored as All-Division choices were Senior co-captains Gerald Adler and David LaFazia; Juniors Matt Agnes, Paul Cugno, Ernie Dimuccio, Joe Mattera and Greg Smith. Senior Paul Potter, who saved many a game as Smithfield’s top lineback¬ er, was named to the All-State Team. Besides five All-Division Juniors, the Sen¬ tinels have Kevin Roberts, Nick Caspoli, Mike Andresino, Tom Bennett, and Bob Dimuccio returning to starting positions. The Sentinels look like a good bet to re¬ peat the long road to a championship in 1980. S.H.S. 6 N. Smithfield OPP. 7 0 St. Ray ' s 9 19 Griswald, Conn. 0 29 Classical 0 2S Central 14 13 S. Ill Boys’ Cross-Country The Smithfield High School cross country runners enjoyed a 500 season in league competition this year and placed senior co-cap¬ tain Joe Bennett on the All-Divi¬ sion first team. Bennett, along with the co-captain Adam Bian- chini and senior Lyle Morse com¬ pleted four years of outstanding running at Smithfield. This year they, along with junior captain- elect Todd Stiles led a relatively inexperienced team to a rather gratifying season for Coaches Bob Salisbury and Carl Buglio. Sophomores Bruce Beaumier, Joe D ' Agostino, and Todd Sevey formed the backbone of the un¬ derclassmen on the varsity and supplied that added depth neces¬ sary to compete in the tough western division. Lacking on this year’s team was the presence of a strong fifth runner needed if the Sentinels were to repeat as league champions. If junior Jim Higham returns as a senior and freshmen Rogers, Cinelli, Del- Ponte, Danielson, Conboy, and Yahn continue to improve, the Sentinels should be a division contender in 1980. They competed in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts and, with their performances against top region¬ al teams, showed that they be¬ longed with the best. Led by All- State Julie McCrorie they won the Fort Shantok Invitational (Conn.), finished second in the Manhattan College Invitational (N.Y.) and had their best perfor¬ mance in the New England Cham¬ pionships (Mass.) with a fourth place finish. Besides All-State honors, Julie was also selected, along with teammate, Cindy Roan, to the All-Division Team. Tricia Davey, Wendy lannuzzi and Donna Brown were elected to the sec¬ ond team All-Division squad and Donna Parks was accorded Hon- oable Mention in the north divi¬ sion. Led by senior co-captains Kerry Bouchard and Sharon Hassell, the team ' s enthu¬ siasm and hard work are what brought on their winning record. The team went as far as being knocked out of a play-off berth by Burrivvile in one of the final games of the season. Offensively the team scored 19 goals against their opponents and had 13 goals scored against them. Besides the co-captains other team members include: Senior-Jenny Ritter; Juniors - Sue Boyle (high scorer), Jennifer Clossick, Chris Forrest, Roseann Mattera, Janet Schott; Sopho¬ mores - Lynn Charron, Debbie Hardman, Cheryl Hawkins,; Freshmen - Alaina Bellucci, Sue Szylin, Michaela Walsh. Head coach was Sue Reposa, assistant coach - Leah Dauphney and help¬ er Sue Booth. The future should be bright for the team since 9 of the 12 starters will be returning next year, including 6 sophs. BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Sentinels, led by senior co-captains Dave Benoit and Joe Bennett, with a fine supporting cast of seniors and unclass¬ men entered the 1979-80 Inter-Scholastic Basketball season determined to repre¬ sent Smithfield with distinction. This they accomplished by working hard and with total team effort. Smithfield opened 1979 by compiling 6 victories with no de¬ feats in exhibition games. This was fol¬ lowed by victories over neighborhood ri¬ vals. In 1980 the Sentinels continued to win and extended their string of victo¬ ries to 9 with no losses. N. Prov. ended the streak by defeating the Sentinels. Bouncing back the team won the next four games. Thus the season continued. The Sentinels ended up with an over-all 19-5 record. Coach Benoit will always re¬ member the 1979-80 basketball squad for its oustanding achievements. SHS OPP 77 Woonsocket 46 54 Ponaganset 53 93 Alumni 78 73 Lincoln 68 92 S. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL Led by co-captains Kerry Bouchard and Diane Peterson, the girls Varsity basket¬ ball team started the season with 3 con¬ secutive victories in the new Class A alignment. Especially significant was a decisive victory over defending State Champions St. Xavier Academy. During the first half of the season, Junior Sue Boyle led all players in scoring and rebounding keeping Smithfield in all the games against the tough Class A opposi¬ tion. With an injury to Sue Boyle and an illness to the second leading scorer Diane Peter¬ son, the team found great difficulty in winning over their much taller, more ex¬ perienced opponents. At the season’s conclusion the team just missed out on the fourth playoff spot. With the return of Co-Captains elect Sue Boyle and Bern Benoit and the continued improvement of underclassmen Gail Smith, Fran Baxter, Chris Forrest, Lynn Charon and promising freshmen M. Pilgrim, the Smithfield Sentinel Nine showed early indications that they would be the team to beat in the Suburban III Division. Unfortunatley, for their oppo¬ nents, defeat never happened and at the end of the regular season Coach Bob Salisbury not only had his Sentinels on top of the league, but they wound up as the only undefeated team in the entire state. Pitcher 3rd baseman Bill Gorgone and first baseman John Higgins co-captained this championship ball club and provided the spark and inspiration all season long. Seniors Norm Cabral. Ed Passarelli, and Bill Hawkins who shared outfield duties with junior speedsters Greg Smith and Matt Agnes, combined with infielders Bob Rathier and Steve Colantuono to make up one of the more solid defensive units in the state. But the real success story belonged to the solid pitching staff of sophomore Dana Ward, senior Steve Geremia, and co-capt. Gorgone. The three were unbeatable. David Day han¬ dled the majority of the catching duties in a pro-like manner until his leg injury, but sophomore Bob Simons and junior Pete Gabrield more than adequately filled in. The Sentinels went right down to the last six teams in the Suburban Divisions when the inevitable came and they dropped a 5-3 heartbreaker in the state-semi-finals. A key injury kept Gorgone from pitching the final game, which might have turned out differently. The departing seniors truly left their mark on the school as the only undefeated team in the history of Smithfield High Athletics. SHS OPP 3 Scituate 2 10 4 3 Ponaganset 2 8 3 5 N. Salutorian Mary Hillstrom recaps the class of ’80 ' s years at S.H.S. Class President Jason Macari is congratulated by Principal Henry Shepard. The class of 1980 stands together for the last time 146 Smiling faces for all of the female graduates Joe Robinson receives his diploma from Mr. Dwyer. The weather turned sour but didn’t dampen spirits! Ann-Marie Trahan receives her diploma as she holds back the tears Finally! A rowdy group of graduates 147 GRADUATION DAY They stood waiting anxiously. It was a moment of mixed feelings. Happy yet sad Looking forward And remembering Knowing, and Wondering. For the Future is Not Tomorrow, but Today Now. And it is their turn to take part. I wonder What they will make of themselves I bet They wonder too. Look to the future - yet remember the past. Let bad memories go - let the good last. Times are changing - change with the times. Remember past words - write future rhymes. Let them go - it hurts a lot, the pain will pass; don’t feel distraught. For known in the heart and actions done- I ' ve lost a part, yet I know I’ve won. The things that were held if we’d stayed together- Fairing the good, distraught cannot weather The future holds secrets and truths to explore- Make the right choices and open the door. Darkness has passed - the way has been lit. The world is a puzzle, let it all fit. They’ll fall together a piece at a time - Come summer alone - come winter life’s mine. To have and to hold, the circle’s complete and after I’m done, I now we shall meet. SENIOR PARENT PA TRONS Mr. and Mrs. Frank Albanese Sr. Mr. and Mrs. John Almonte Mr. and Mrs. Edmund J. I hope that this book will always allow the seniors to remember the good times . Anvil ' 80 was a lot of hard work and, at times, very time consuming. For me it was truly a learning experience and for that I am grateful. I only hope that the seniors of 1980 enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed working on it! Susan Boyle Editor AN ADVISOR’S AFTERWORD. After many months of hard work, Anvil ' 80 was created. I feel as though it is a reflection of those who worked on it - be that good or bad! I would like to single out Susan Boyle, Editor - she made this book possible. Her hard work and dedication is an example that should be followed by others. On behalf of those involved with Anvil ' 80, read and enjoy! Mary-Margaret ladevaia Advisor 159 Seniors not pictured in Senior Section: Surapee Bates Diane M. Bergeron Timothy Carney John P.
