As the pictures portray on this page, the history of the building is readily apparent. From the first hole exca¬ vated, to structural work in the auditorium corridor, to masonry work in the courtyard, there was always one element missing—people. Now that this latter element has been added for ten year ' s worth of seasoning, it can be said the building has mellowed and aged gracefully. The men whose names are listed on the commemorative plaque must be justly proud of their accomplishment. Now, Smithfield High School must turn its attention to meeting head-on the problems and challenges of its second decade of existence. Again as before, it is peo¬ ple who will make this happen. The valuable legacy of our free society must continue to be the conviction that education is the key to a successful existence. For their continued support and enthusiastic cooperation, the ed¬ itors and staff rededicate this edition of the ANVIL, as we did our first edition, to all the citizens of Smith- field who recognize the importance of preparing students for tomorrow ' s world with the best possible means— education. Read On Everyone knows how much fun a field trip is. It rates somewhere up with the sinking of the Titanic and the San Francisco earthquake. It all started when two brightfaced girls came to me and asked if I ' d chaperone their annual field trip. Not realizing I was entering into a highly-systemized form of torture, I said Yes. On the appointed day I sat with 45 students in the sub-zero chill of the auditorium waiting for the vice¬ principal to give his usual speech on conduct and good behavior. I noticed that half the kids were either falling asleep or trying to fight off frostbite. I, for one, had been looking for¬ ward to this trip for three days, having been told that a teacher ' s first field trip was an experience that would never be forgotten. When we got on the bus, I went over to the veteran chaperones and said uneasily, Okay, guys, you can take off the football helmets. I get the joke. When nobody moved, I said, Come on, George, you know you don ' t need that bullet¬ proof vest. Since they still didn ' t move, I sat down with that uneasy feeling known as FEAR and PANIC. Everyone seemed human. I walked down the aisle, talking to the kids, then returned to my seat in back of the driver. Nice day, I remarked to him. He didn ' t move a muscle and just stared straight ahead. Shellshock, one of my fellow teachers told me, From his last field trip. The bus finally started and we were on our way. Hearing small, exploding noises in back of me, I turned around to see 45 pop-top lids go flying through the air. I dived under the seat. One of the teachers nodded knowingly. The driver kept staring straight ahead. The rest of the ride was unevent¬ ful. There was the usual talking and laughing, with the couple in the back seat trying for the Guinness Book of Records for non-stop kissing. I spent half of the trip wondering if someone can get tired lips. When we arrived at our destination, the mad rush to the door pleased me, thinking everyone was anxious to start the tour...until I noticed 100 89% of them were headed to the rest rooms for a cigarette. I herded them all together once again and our tour began. The tour went well with the Polaroids click¬ ing and the low talking. Only a few minor mishaps occurred. There was the boy overly fond of the Tyran¬ nosaurus in the dinosaur room five people got lost (three of them teachers), one got sick (another teacher), and the biggest scare happened when it was discovered the boa constrictor was not in its cage. All too soon, it was time for the return trip home. The mood back was in sharp contrast to the trip down. The yelling and screaming was punctuated by half the bus singing the worst of the Captain and Tennille. Suddenly an explos¬ ion in the back of the bus moved one of the teachers to begin a Hail Mary. On my way back from confiscating all the fire¬ crackers, I again noticed the blank stare of the driver, but this time I detected the hint of a fixed smile on his face. Next came the noxious clouds of pale, blue smoke. I turned and yelled, Okay, put ' em out and open the windows. The smoke got thicker as 45 kids exhaled. Meanwhile, there was the unmis- takeable crunch of potato chips, the sound of PRO-FM on a transis¬ tor radio, and ten boys played keep-away with someone ' s hat. I was already in a state of total exhaustion. The driver continued to stare blankly, the couple in the back seat were still trying for the record, and two kids were doing the bump on one of the seats. Unfortunately, we encountered a traffic jam on the way home. The kids loved that. Leaning out the windows, they spent half their time playing Dear Abby to the couple fighting in the car below and telling their life stories to the old man in the ' 53 Oldsmobile. I knew I had seen it all when one of the young girls started telling this gentleman HER philosophy on life. As we drove off into the sunset, the driver continued to stare blankly and the whole bus rocked to the chorus of 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.
