,149 f W wa Kip. .JV Broadway School Sedaha H'8h S'-17001 Dedication and Foreword To one hundred years of progress nn educa t1on and to the Sedalxans who made lt posslble the Archnves staff dedlcates the 1960 ARCHIVES Interest nn educatlon began early m the his tory of Sedalna In 1867 after the cmzens recog nlzed that 1f thenr small town was to grow and prosper schools would be needed the flrst school ln Sedalla was opened on the snte where Broadway School now stands Although buxlt for elementary educat1on only the flrst hugh school classes were later conducted on the thnrd floor In 1873 the flrst hugh school class was graduated Eventually the hlgh school classes over flowed their llmlted thlrd floor quarters By 1895 Sedallans were advocatmg a separate hlgh school m their growmg town Sedalna Hlgh School was opened m 1895 96 1n the gray stone bulldmg that no h College w ouses the Central Business As tnme went by If too was overcrowded wlth students and ln 1923 a new school was opened on a grant of land from Mrs Sarah Cot ton daughter of Gen George R Smxth a found er of Sedalla Named Smith Cotton th1s school has served Sedalla as its hugh school smce that date A new addmon was completed m the fall of 1952 Completed also m that year was the cafeterna In 1935 through the jennxe jaynes Lewis foundatlon Smlth Cotton was allowed use of a stadnum bu1lt by the foundatxon ln Sedalxa It ns used as the home of Smith Cotton s football and track teams The Archlves staff hopes that as the stu dents of Smnth Cotton and others read thxs an nu 1 they wlll apprecnate the efforts of Sedalla cltlzens over the past century that have enabled us to enjoy the modern educatnonal advantages whlch we have today .nui-
