Mr. Thomas Joseph Norris With young ideas, warmth, and Kentucky good-nature, Mr. Tom Norris, the newusuperintendent of Sedalia schools, has endeared himself to that student body which he came to serve. That meaning and direction is clarified in the theme of this Archives, There is no art so divine as, that of quickening the mind. He has done well. We are grateful to him. Princess Pat Schreiner, Queen Clio Tsateri, Princess Myrna Miller Archives Beauties Reign Uver Christmas Ball The Archives Christmas Ball is the first for- mal dance of the year. From the first day of the yearbook sale to the time of the Grand March, the students anticipate this event with joy. Each year the students who buy annuals are privileged to elect a queen among the three can- didates chosen by the Archives staff. This year, on December 5, the Grand March was led by the attractive Archives Queen, Clio Tsateri, her es- cort, Gary Christian, and her attendants, Myrna Miller, escorted by Dale Maggard, and Pat Schreiner, escorted by Karl Kasak. Following the queens, the Archives staff led the three hun- dred dancers as they filed around the cafeteria first in couples, then four abreast, and, finally, with eight in each rank. The long march ended with the crowning of Queen Clio by co-editors, Ted Walch and Leroy Street, before a black backdrop sprinkled with silver stars and flanked by two white Christmas trees. Many of the couples sacrificed a few min- utes of dancing to the excellent music of Bob Cummings' orchestra to have taken, in front of the old-fashioned sleigh filled with gaily wrap- ped packages and a small white tree, a picture they can treasure for many years as a momento of a beautiful dance and a truly wonderful eve- ning. ank ,rv-f,. x ,- H., ,W MR ,, , ,,, ,M , A f 1-J ...nj uf in-r -Q M, VJ, r A Wf'4fmL.J , 1551232 A 6?3,jH.w f .P ff , fe!! ,. 1 ,V3,qmz,:IL A M4.4 V A J, , , I 1' wb ff f '.4,. At that time she receives her golden sceptre, the symbol of her reign as queen of the incoming Senior Class. At the beginning of the Candle Service, the Senior Class in caps and gowns are led in solemn procession into the auditorium by their president and Queen and by the Student Council president and vice-president. At the same time, the junior Class, led by their newly elected officers, enter from the other side of the auditorium, the girls in beautiful dresses-and the boys in suits. The leaders and a number of carefully chosen out- standing students from each class are seated on the stage, which is decorated with large baskets of spring flowers and which is centered by a table contaihing the symbolic candles of the ceremony. The most beautiful part of the investiture of the newly elected officers is devoted to the be- stowing of royal honor. In solemnity befitting their capped and gowned dignity, the Senior Queen and her attendants delegate to their suc- cessors, regal in lovely formals, the responsibility for always being gracious, exemplary in their conduct, and charming to their associates. The new Senior Queen then receives the goldn scep- tre and begins her reign. During the service are sung Kipling's Re- cessiomzl and Blest Be the Tie that Binds.,The investiture ends with the lighting of a taper in the hands of each senior and junior on the stage. The echoing sound of Taps is heard as tears fill the eyes of many of those who are graduating. At such a Candle Service on May 19, 1958, lovely Queen Lucille and her attendants, Connie and Annetta, began their reign over the Class of 1959. The stu- dents eagerly await the first forays of the team and the crowning of the first Smith-Cotton beauty, the Activity Queen. 0 Each year the five classes of Smith-Cotton select queen candidates, and thus begins the big- gest sales competition of the year, the Activity Drive. This year, the Seniors triumphantly proved themselves the best salesmen of season activity tickets. - Jack Robinson, president of the senior class, had the honor of escorting lovely Judy Paxson, Activity Queen of 1958, during the half-time crowning ceremony. Miss Paxson was accompanied by her 'at- tendants, Karen Schlosser of the Junior Class escorted by Doug Gilpin, Jackie Peace of the Sophomore Class escorted by Charles Case, Linda Bain of the Freshman Class escorted by Don Hausam, and Judy Sewell of the Eighth Grade Class escorted by Johnny Johnson. Following her coronation, Queen Judy reigned with her attendants over the second half of the Springfield Hillcrest game. 'I , 5 ? Its many activi- ties, including the riotious snake dance and bon- fire held the night before the Homecoming game, are climaxed by the crowning of the Homecoming queen, chosen by the football team. This year, at the half-time of one of the mostexciting games ever played on the Jennie jaynes gridiron, Myrna Miller, escorted with very elaborate ceremony across the field by Dale Maggard, was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1958 by co-captain Bob Garrison. Wlllll Regal Splendor G The queen was attended by Linda-Vedder, escorted by Kenneth Shepherd, and Mary jones, escorted by Richard Weru. As the queen and her attendants approached the bleachers they passed through a band forma- tion of S-C and through an aisle formed by the enthusiastic Spiz club. After much consultation. the department decided this year to attempt Tennessee Williams' The Glass Meuugerie. The students involved in the production found it to be a most challenging., one. The actors. whose pictures and names are on page IU. worked long and hard and came through with '1 very' polished performance. However. the problem of presenting., a great play does not end with polishing, the acting... udy' Paxson. as stage manager. showed perfection in having., ev ery actor and prop in place 'tt all times. Priscilla Scott and Leroy Street made the tre- mendous prohlem of lighting the show seem a simple one to the audience, David Sparks and Prince Thornton, with their stage crew. executed .t set that helped carry the mood and theme of the play. F udy gliedel. Vlr. Aninclfs girl Friday. as assistant director. put in many hours develop- ing., the prompt book and filling, in as director. The next production of the dr'nn'itics depart- ment was Anton Chekov's The Hour. This play' was completely produced. directed. staged, and acted by' the students in the fourth hour drama class. Nancee Homan did the honors as director. with Leroy Street. Betty Sue lidde. and ack Clark portraying., the characters. The play' was well received hy the Senior Hig.,h audience. The department's Christmas play was an original cutting of Charles Dickens' f.lJ!'f,fflIld5 Carol. The part of Scrooge was very ably played by' David Sparks. assisted by a very well bal- anced supporting cast of Ted Wltlch as Bob Cratchet. Priscilla Scott and Mrs. Cratchet. judy ,liedel as Margaret. Rusty' Leslie as Tiny Tim. Ranatta Miesner as Helen. and with Eugene Dickey, judy Paxson. Sharon Greene. Sue Turk, jim Couhig. and Prince Thornton in minor roles. judy Paxson again acted as stage manager ant Leroy Street was responsible. for the lig.,ht- in . Both came through with technical perfec- tion. The drama was enjoyed thoroughly by the unior High assembly. One of the duties of the drama department is to provide the dramatic acting. dramatic inter- pretation. and duet acting., scenes for competition at the various speech contests over the state. Out of four tournaments in which Smith-Cotton en- tered duet acting., our people have placed in three. At Lebanon, Sandra Rossman and Ted Walch won third place with a scene from the Glass lleuugerie: at West Plains jeff Lockett and ackie Peace won second with a cutting., from lhsen's Gbnxls' and at Springfield Central, Ted W'alch and Leroy' Street won first with the XVftlk- ing., Scene from Tea and Syn1fmlby by Ander- son. ln Dramatic Reading., Dr-mrttic lnterpreta- tion. and Dramatic Acting. Smith-Cotton has en- tered the finals in every' tournament this year. Although we have not won any firsts in these events. we have placed second and third several times. On the agenda for the rest of the year is a one act play by Thornton Xvilder entitled A Happy juruey From Camden to Trenton. judy Paxson has stepped in as director of a very challenging production. The leading., roles will be played by 'Vlary' Lee Brewer, David Sparks Donny Rich- ardson and Alice Shoemaker. ln the supporting, roles will be Prince Thornton, Gordon Anthony, Ranatta Miesner. Patty' Studer, and Barbara ackson. This play will be presented to the un- ior High audience on March IX, l959. Altogether, the drama department has en' joyed bringing, the best in drama to the school and community' audiences of Sedalia. We feel we have participated in a very rewarding year. and we are looking forward to an even better year in l959-60. 121 Drama Department MdllUg8S Intramural Plays . 5 C i' I 5, . ii A ka if S5 s' X ry i t ,e g g af ' .ff .
