Sedalia, October 5. - - - Srr.ith 4 Cotton turned certain defeat into victory over one of the state's best football rc ams, North Kan- sas City. Newman scored the only touchdown for the Tigers in the first half. The score was 19-6, N.K.C., at the half. During the third quarter neither team scored. The fourth quarter saw Newman put up a determined and explosive showing. The fleet halfback scored twice and converted twice to lead S - C to a 20-19 win. This game was one of the upsets of the year. .-. .IL '4 1. An alert Springfield defense brings Newman down short of the goal line. . 44.31. Newman starts on a 15 yard dash into Springfield territory Grid Season Hannibal, October 12. - - - A charged-up Tiger squad ruined Homecoming plans for the Han- nibal Pirates. Newman and Shepherd scored touchdowns the first half to give the Tigers a 12-6 lead. With Newman carrying the pigskin, the Tigers scored twice in the third period. Hannibal tallied once in the fourth quarter against the Tiger reserves, and the Game ended 24-13 in favor of S - C. This game was the best offensive showing of the Tigers during the season. Columbia, October 21. - - - The Kewpies from Columbia turned every S - C mistake into touch- downs in punching out a 18-U victory. Fumblitis and inexper- ience cost S - C their third defeat of the season. The Tigers' of fense iust couldn't get started as the Kewpies defense stopped S - C cold, time after time. S - C out uo a determined battle but just didn't have the horses to cope with the Kewpies speed.

Smith-Cotton Tigers are raring to go. Account of '56 Grid Season September 14. - - - Opening the 1956 grid season, the Smith - Cotton Tigers defeated a sur- prising Fulton eleven, 7 - 6. Unable to get the ground attack started, Murray took to the air and hit Shepherd with a 7 yard touchdown pass. The half ended with the score 13-6 in favor of Central. Central pushed over another touchdown in the last half to defeat the Tigers 20-6. Springfield, September 28. - - - Smith - Cotton received their second defeat of the season from a strong team, Central of Springfield. Smith - Cotton plaved their best game thus far in the season but inexperience again cost the Tigers the game. The Tigers were trailing 13-U as they went into the dressing room at half time, but came out the second half an inspired team. The Tigers out played Sprinafield the whole second half: but, when the final gun sounded, the score stood 19-14 in favor of Springfield. New- man and Gates scored for the Tigers.

Goodrich is brought down atter gaining yardage against Mexico. - '15,-fr' Murray is hauled down trom behind by Mexico after gain- find Sedalia, October 26. - - - Homecoming was ruined for the Tigers by a hard hitting lefferson City aggre- gation. During the first half the Tigers put up a de- termined battle and were trailing only by a 7-O score. The Tigers played the lays to a standstill during the third quarter also, but in the fourth period the lay power exploded for three touchdowns. The game ended 26-O, leff City ahead. ing 4 yards. Baytown, November 2. - - - Rated a 35 point under- dog, the Tigers from S - C played their best game of the year against the Blue lays. From the opening whistle to the final gun, the Tigers ripped up and down the field only to fall short of the goal line. Bryan and Goodrich supplied the offensive punch, gaining 201 of 280 yards rushing for the Tigers. The score might have been different, if the Tigers hadn't fumbled the ball on the Baytown eleven. Bryan and Newman scored for the Tigers, but the two touch- downs weren't enough. When the final gun sound- ed, Raytown had won a hard earned victory, 28-13. Goodrich scores S-Cs first touchdown against Mexico Season Sedalia, November 7. - - - The Tigers suffered their sixth defeat of the season at the hands of a deter- mined Mexico Bulldog squad. From the start it look- ed as if victory would be for the Tigers, as Good- rich and Newman scored quick touchdowns. How- ever the Tigers were quickly tied, and the score at the half was 13-13. In the last half, the Tigers gave the game away: and, as the final gun sounded, Mexico was victorious, 27-19. Shepherd scored S - C's last touchdown on a pass from Murray. Boonville, November 18. - - - The Tigers ended their season with a disappointing tie with Kemper Military Academy. Starting quickly, the Tigers punched over a touchdown with Newman carrying the ball. Gates kicked the extra point and the score was 7-0, Tigers. Then in the second quarter the Kemper backfield ran wild and scored two touchdowns and led at the half 14-7. Murray led the Tigers to a third quarter touchdown, going over from the six yard line. Bill Reed scored the extra point. Kemper threatened twice in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers forward wall stopped them. The game ended 14-14.
