We feel that, when you read this book, it will mean more to you than simply a photographic coverage of the year's events: for here we have perpetuated some of the memories most pleasant to Smith-Cotton stu- dents .... memories of friendships with which stu- dents have been surrounded, of social events which Q Q helped liven the daily routine of study, of goals reach- ed only through hard work, and of the teachers whose primary interest is to provide a well-rounded educa- tion for the students. It is our intention that you will treasure these memories, but above all, that you will honor the true spirit of Smith-Cotton .... the spirit of high ideals, of democratic principles, and of cm rich and full educa- tion. It is with this desire that we present this, the 1957 Archives. Smith-Cotton Tigers are raring to go. Account of '56 Grid Season September 14. - - - Opening the 1956 grid season, the Smith - Cotton Tigers defeated a sur- prising Fulton eleven, 7 - 6. The game was Q defensive battle until midway through the sec- ond quarter, when Goodrich broke the game wide open with an 80 Tigers kicked realize, Fulton iod on yard sprint to put the ahead. Bryan calmly the extra point only to after the game, its value. scored in the same per- a 46 yard pass play but failed to convert the extra point. The Tiger forward wall held Fulq ton at bay the rest of the game to conserve victory for S - C. September 21. - - - Suffering their first defeat of the season, the Tigers were overpowered by a strong St. Ioe Central tearn. The Central eleven, out-weigh- ing the Tigers considerably, held S-C to a meager 39 yards rushing. Unable to get the ground attack started, Murray took to the air and hit Shepherd with a 7 yard touchdown pass. The half ended with the score 13-6 in favor of Central. Central pushed over another touchdown in the last half to defeat the Tigers 20-6. Springfield, September 28. - - - Smith - Cotton received their second defeat of the season from a strong team, Central of Springfield. Smith - Cotton plaved their best game thus far in the season but inexperience again cost the Tigers the game. The Tigers were trailing 13-U as they went into the dressing room at half time, but came out the second half an inspired team. Coaches Arnall and Kennon inherit five returning track lettermen to carry on for the Gold and Black. Although the nucleus appears thin, the coaches are confident of molding another top-flight squad which will bring many honors to S - C. Good luck to the squad and coaches. Eleven lettermen return to Coaches Gilmore and Glenn for the 1957 baseball season. If good pitching can be found, we are sure another conference title will be within the grasp of the Tigers. Last year's squad went to State. All of us hope the Tigers can make the state tournament two years in a row. The golf situation again lool-rs impressive, as Coach Glavin has three returnina lettermen from last year's conference champions. If a good fourth man can be found, we are sure S - C will again be triumphant on the greens. Good luck golf team! A tennis team is being considered if suitable arrangements for practice can be made. Smith - Cotton is looking forward with pleasure to an active season of spring sports. 55 Dramatics Class Present Echo Cast Henry Ross lim Goodrich Mary Ross Kay Caraway Lillian Ross Deanie Perkins David Ross Wayne Brown The one act play, Echo , gives a dramatic glimpse into the troubled lite ol Henry Ross ex- actly one year after his son committed suicide. Kris has spent the entire year as an American Field Service student sponsored by the American Association of University Women, who obtained for their A. F. S. program contributions from many Sedalia organizations and individuals, and free tuition from the Board of Education. Kris has, lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hemphill, who have been his devoted American parents since his arrival in Sedalia in August. At Smith - Cotton, Kris has been an honorary member of the Archives staff, ot the student council, and of the L-Club tinto which he was duly and ma- liciously initiatedl. He has participated in a regular class program and in all activities. As his English has improved, Kris has given talks about his native Norway to many of the civic organizations of Sedalia. In this way, he and his country have become dear to the hearts of not only the students but of the adults as well. J ' luniors? Yes, that's how we're classified in the office, thought of bv our teachers, and labeled on this page of the Archives. Iuniors? Not really. We're the seniors to be. Retrace with us briefly the rocky road of the 1956- '57 school year, and you'll see how we've trained ourselves for that coveted position of seniors. Honors achieved, goals attained, trials endured - - all these things have earned us the privilege of beina the '58 Smith - Cotton Seniors! Let us enumerate briefly, First, who baked hundreds of cakes and dipped the gallons of ice cream for one of the most success- ful ice cream socials in the history of Smith - Cotton? The luniors, of course! Who slashed show admission prices with the sale of Student Identification Cards? The luniors, of course! In December which class had nineteen industri- 2 Class ous students initiated into National Honor Society? Naturally, the Iuniors! Even though we didn't always win, who were behind our Tiger teams with much pep and enthusi- asm? Yes, the Iuniors! What boys did more duckwalking, shined the most shoes, and ate more eggs during the great L- Club initiation? Guess! What with American history outlines, those infuri- ating Latin subjunctives, and the foul-smelling fumes when someone aoofed just a little on the chemis- try mixture, who had time to plan the lovely Iunior- Senior banquet and prom? Yep, the Iuniors! And, at the impressive candle service during commencement week, who stood solemn and a little starry-eyed as thev accepted the responsibilities that would be theirs for the comina year? You guess- ed it, the Iuniors of 1957 - -the mighty Seniors of 1958. F. L. April 13 The National Forensic League represents a vital part in the extracurricular program here at Smith- Cotton. Members of the Sedalia Chapter have par- ticipated in debate, extemporaneous speaking, inter- pretive reading, duet acting, analytical speaking, oratorical, dramatic and humorous declamations. Through untiring efforts and many challenges. the Smith-Cotton National Forensic League received the National Merit Award for having outstanding membership and high scholastic records. The goal for receiving this award was reached by having in- terested students in the field of speech. The influence of speech work is important in all phases of life, thus N.F.L. represents a step up the ladder to success. 4 S, K If E digit: it Senior Student Council Don Land President Vice-President ...... .... Future Teachers of America A Teachers Creed I believe in boys and girls, the men and women of a great tomorrow: that whatsoever the boy soweth the man shall reap. I believe in the curse of ignorance: in the efficacy of schools: in the dignity of teaching: and in the joy of serving others. I believe in wisdom as revealed in human lives as well as in the pages of the printed book: in lessons taught, not so much by precept as bv example: in ability to work with the hands as well as to think with the head: in everything that makes life large and lovely. I believe in beauty in the schoolroorn, in the home, in daily life, and out- of-doors. I believe in laughter: in love: in faith: in all ideals and distant hopes that lure us on. I believe that every hour of every day we receive a just reward for all we are and all we do. I believe in the present and its opportunities: in the future and its promises: and in the divine joy of living. The Hazel Gray Chapter of the Future Teachers of America is an active organization which holds fortnightly meetings with very interesting programs. In the spring, a tea honoring the faculty is held in the senior high school library. Although the member- Edwin Osgood Grover ship is composed entirely of girls, there are in S-C a number of boys who intend to teach but cannot be active members of F.T.A. because of their athletic commitments. Mrs. Polly Ann Sillers is the sponsor of the chapter. 153 1... aux-ha STANDING: Mr. Miller, Tom Harris, Walter Clark, Donald Sublett, Bobby Holdren, Richard Deason, Maxine Shoemaker.
