D. for old S-C. Congratulations Congratulations to Coach Dow and his Tiger squad who gave Smith-Cotton its best football team in many a year. Coach Dow and squad went to the power formation, single wing. Con sidered by many as one of the best teams in the state, the Tigers ran roughshod over every opponent except North Kansas City. Excuses don't win ball games, but it was evident that injuries plagued the Tigers in that contest. For the fifth time in the last ten years, Coach Dow's Tigers copped the Central Missouri Conference title. Although many Tigers stood out, the great season would not have been unless the coaches. Dow, Glavin, and Edmondson. and the squad as a whole had worked patiently and played to the best of their ability. AGAIN CONGRATULATIONS, COACHES AND BOYS! Oh, gee, Coach, look what I almost had. Bill Wingfield almost intercepts a pass against Springfield. Marshall Bryan makes a nice tackle on an M.M.A. boy before he can make much yardage. O.K., you guys! Come on over and help me .pick this poor fellow up. This year's track team promises to be one of the best the Gold and Black has ever produced. Under the leadership and guidance of Coaches Iames and Arnall, who were track stars in their own right, the Tigers will be after their third successive confer- ence crown. Twelve lettermen return to the Tigers, which indicates the potential the thin clads have. We are looking forward to seeing the Tigers place high in the state meets. Best of luck to the track team and its coaches. Coach Russ Gilmore starts his first year as head coach of the Tigers' baseball team. With the able assistance of Cecil Glenn, we are sure he will have a qreat team on the field at all times. The Tigers will have seven lettermen back to bolster our hopes for another conference title. Smith-Cotton will have all four golf lettermen back from last year's conference champions. Hopes are indeed high for these boys and their coach, Howard Glavin. We are hoping the Tigers can make it two in a row. We, of the Archives staff, hope that when you are reading and looking over this book you will be able to say well done to the boys who participated for the Gold and Black in this year's spring sports. May they triumph always and carry on the Smith- Cotton traditions. Walt Kennon . . . They have had more homework, more responsibility, more social obligations, more supposedly shy boys chasing more flirtatious girls. more late hours, more problem parents, more tardies, more F's, more meetings, less common sense. and more noisy self-confidence. Next year they will be-- IUNIORS who study the business methods for selling movie I. D. cards, debate class rings, plan the Prom, and cram for that English or history test. Iuniors accept the burdens of leadership and the honors of Honor Society, L Club, and Spiz membership. Iuniors develop social graces, pour at the Iunior-Senior Tea, assume senior authority at the candlelight service, and dine at the multitudinous spring banquets. These activities leave little time for them to concentrate on becoming-- MIGHTY SENIORS who are qualified to inhabit the hall in front of Miss Sawford's room, to study the least and complain the most, to be tardy at least once a week, and to plan for Kid Day. Pros and cons of careers, line upon line of Macbeth, definitions of morals and mores, and dream of cars, money, clothes, and the opposite sex confuse him. He excels in roaming the halls, losing books, acquiring novel nicknames, using precious notebook paper for writing personal notes, and continually checking out of study hall. The senior collects dance programs, wilted corsages, and the pencils, telephone numbers and class rings of other persons. He is the worry of his parents and teachers, the idol of his younger associates, the citizen of tomorrow, and the hope of the world -- a Senior. Future Teachers of America Young people who decide to be teachers with a full knowledge of its opportunities and require- ments are more likely to make good teachers than those who merely drift into the profession by acci- dent. Knowing this, the National Education Associ- ation, in 1937, established the Future Teachers of America Association. The purpose of the F. T. A. club is exploratory, prevocational, and character-forming-to encourage young people to cultivate in themselves the qualities of personality and character which are the founda- tions of successful teaching, to acquaint young people with the inspiring story of the schools, the part free schools have played in the development of our democratic way of life, the heroic pioneering associated with their establishment and expansion: and to provide young people with specific informa- tion about opportunities in the various fields of education. The Future Teachers of America was organized in Smith-Cotton in 1952. The Smith-Cotton chapter was named the Hazel Gray Chapter of Future Tea- chers of America in honor of Miss Hazel Gray, a history teacher in our high school. The first sponsor of our organization was Miss Edna Snell. During 1953 and 1954 the organization was inactive. In 1955 the F. T. A. was again organized in our high school under the sponsorship of Mrs. P. A. Sillers. At pre- sent there are thirteen members in the organization. - ' f Q- t f K .
