DEDICATION To the 8811 Alumni of Slippery Rock State Teachers College, who have known these classrooms, halls, and dormitories, organized and participated in these activities, lived and loved on this campus, who have enjoyed the fellowship and the hello” tradition, who have made their marks in education and other fields, who proudly represent Slippery Rock—in fact, who are Slippery Rock—we, the Saxigena Staff of 1954, humbly and respectfully dedicate this edition. In the pages which follow, we hope to clearly represent those things that you, the student body, are now experiencing, trusting that these experiences will remain with you always, just as they are now with the present Alumni of the Rock.” 10 Seated: Louise Woodling, Secretary to the President of the College; Henriette Kraf-zert, Marian Foster Smith, Secretary-Treasurer; Zillah J. Shremp, W. H. Campbell, President. Standing: W. E. Gilmore, R. J. Heasley, Vice President; R. D. Horsmon, N. K. Thompson, D. W. Houk, President of the College. BOARD OF TRUSTEES “The board of trustees of each of the State institutions . . . shall consist of nine members, and the head of the department having supervision of the institution ex officio.” “Boards of trustees . . . shall have general direction and control of the property and management of their respective institutions.” 11 Prejidenf of tho College Dr. Dale W. Hov To the Class of 1954: For each of you this acrostic: H onor -(Ideoos)-U nderstanding -teh4- E nthusiasm -M)- HUE is an interesting word. A hue can be a ghostly apparition radiated by one whose love is selfish, and only for self. A hue can be as beautiful and refreshing as a rainbow radiated by one whose love is for others. It all depends on how you love. In work or play Or in friends you choose, Select your loves For the rainbow hues. Dale W. Houk 12 Dean of Infraction Dr. Leonard S. Duncan Everyone wants to amount to something in the eyes of someone. No one finds pleasure in being a failure. I think that if I could live my life over again, I would spend less time pointing out to others their faults, their weaknesses; I would spend more time finding something to commend in each of my pupils, and in seeing to it that those words of commendation actually are delivered. We have no way of knowing how much good can be done by dropping a word of praise in the ear of someone who is hungry for recognition. 13 Leonard S. Duncan The possibility of your success after graduation lies in the enthusiasm you show toward your work, and the energy which you expend. Patience, kindness, tolerance, and understanding toward others will help you succeed in your chosen profession. J. R. Eiler Dean of Men Mr. John R. Eiler It was Emerson who said, Let him go where he will, he can only find so much beauty or worth as he carries.” The zeal we have for study depends upon the zeal we bring to our books; the admiration we have for our Alma Mater depends upon the depths to which our admiration can go; the love we will have for teaching will depend upon the love we have for children, the sincerity we have in our work, the real desire we will have to be of service to all. Lois Harner Doan of Women Min Lois J. Harner To the Seniors: You have completed your internship and are ready to assume the full responsibilities of your profession. The way may not always be smooth, but no other work in the world is more gratifying. There will not be time enough for everything. “Hold fast that which is good,” but also pass it on to others. H. Lloyd Peters 14 A ji font Doan of Mon Mr. H. Lloyd Peter It is our hope that four years at Slippery Rock have made problem-solvers” of you— that they have made you capable of coping with the tremendous challenges of this jet-propelled atomic age—that they may enable you to see what is as a stepping stone to what can be. May your service be a credit to you, your school, and our profession. C. M. Long Director of laboratory School Dr. Clarence M. long The world in which we live is a place where we must try to get ahead with one another rather than ahead of one another. Education is a continuing process. May you both as citizens and as teachers bend your efforts to the attainment of democratic values and ideals. Isabel Anderson Supervisor of Elementary Instruction Miss Isabel Anderson Be always mindful that, if you are to be happy and successful, you need above all else a patient understanding heart—a heart that teaches by example rather than by words. Lamping, R. Corona; Co-captains R. Dilts, J. Hyland. Slippery Rock opened the 1953-1954 season by defeating the Ashland Eagles at Thompson Field by the score of 32-6. The game sparkled with many dazzling plays made by the Rock.” Duncan, Fiorante, and Hyland scored single touchdowns, while junior Phil Sheridan scored two T.D.'s. Everyone on the Rocket squad saw action in the game. This game proved to be the high spot of the year for the ball club. For the first time in the series, the powerful Muskingum team fell before a highly-spirited Slippery Rock eleven by the score of 32-19. Long runs were the feature of the day as Joe Pekar went 49 yards with an intercepted pass. Bob Weller went 84 yards, Ed Hepe went 90 and 69 yards, and Hyland passed three yards to Hugo Fiorante to end the scoring for the day. The Rockets were held to a 6-6 tie os they ran into a game with the fired-up Edinboro eleven. The game was loosely played by both squads, and thus the afternoon became a long one. Slippery Rock trailed Edinboro 6-0 at half-time, but came roaring back to tie the ball game when Tom Heckendorn blocked a punt on the 28 yard line. Don Duncan scored the lone T.D. of the game for Slippery Rock a few seconds later on a drive off tackle. Slippery Rock threatened several other times but could not cross the double white stripe again. The Rockets lost the services of ace half Phil Sheridan for the rest of the season due to a severe shoulder separation in the first period. A. Volfz R. Borowitz H. Bleich R. Hortnett H. Bergman D. Elmore : : A large and powerful Shippensburg team visited Slippery Rock and brought with them the longest winning streak in Pennsylvania football. Led by Spencer Keyes, perhaps one of the best backs in the state, Shippensburg scored in the first, second, and third periods. Slippery Rock started to drive in the third and fourth periods. S.R. scored when Captain Dick Dilts blocked a punt on the Shippensburg 10 yard line, and Bob Weller scored two plays later. Ed Hepe scored the Rock's last touchdown in the fourth period. This was the first defeat for the Slippery Rock eleven, the score being 20-14. S.R. traveled to Westminster to meet one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the state. Westminster scored early in the first period on a pass. S. R. bounced back and scored their lone T. D. on a pass from Hyland to Fiorante, but the extra point was missed. Westminster scored again on a fifteen-yard screen pass in the third quarter to put the game on ice. This was the first time since 1934 that S.R. had lost to Westminster. The score was 1 3-6. The Rock met Clarion on a day that was marred by four inches of snow. S.R. drove for what seemed to be a score the second time they got the ball, but the score was recalled and this, along with the fact that Pekar, Brown, and Duncan were injured, seemed to break the team's back. Clarion scored all of its points by capitalizing on S.R. mistakes. They scored three touchdowns on intercepted passes and two on recovered fumbles. The final score was 30-0. Slippery Rock threw the state teachers college race into a mad scramble by defeating Indiana 14-0. The game was played under a sunny sky with the temperature ranging around 90°. Pekar scored the first touchdown with just seconds remaining in the first half. Morea scored the clinching touchdown in the third period on a pass from Hyland. Indiana put up a good fight, but could not match the powerful S.R. ground and passing attack. The Homecoming festivities were topped off by a victory over a stubborn Geneva eleven. The star for the day was Hugo Fiorante who scored two T.D.'s, recovered three fumbles and an onside kick in the first quarter of the ball game. He later scored a third touchdown on a pass from Hyland. Joe Pekar also bulled for a touchdown through the entire Geneva team to register six points. Everyone was well pleased with the team's 27-13 victory over Geneva, since it was the first time the Rock had defeated a Geneva football team. SOCCER First Row—P. Morjico, V. licimky, D. Center forward Ken Ball set a new season's record with 15 goals and was selected as All-American. John Stemper and Earl Fair, along with Ken, were named to the All Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware team. Coach Eiler and the entire team are to be commended for the fine season. Next are the invitationals in which the W.A.A. sports heads choose the captains who in turn choose the teams. Finally each class elects a selection committee which chooses the class team. Those not participating in the scheduled games find recreation in a variety of activities including swimming, ping pong, hand ball, skiing, and badminton. Ground, sticks! Ground, sticks! Ground, sticks! Slam! and the W.A.A. World Series between pick-up hockey teams was off to a roaring start. The Roy Campanellas finally came out on top after a hard struggle. The Hallowe'en Hopeful invitational teams followed and this series was won by Stacey’s Masks . The Juniors were victorious in the class team playoffs. Finally, the All Star Green and White teams met and the Greens captured the title. When the weather brought the girls indoors, the volleyball tournaments started with Dennis the Menace”, captained by Janet Laffey, winning the pick-up championship. The animal invitational games were won by Mary Ruth Wilson's Martens . The Juniors again copped the class title. The main feature of December was the annual Christmas Party. The program included skits, caroling, and the presentation of awards. In the basketball competition which followed, Coolie Healy's Montgomery Clift team was the pick-up champ. The invitational Hit Parade was won by Barb Trainers’s Marie team. As soon as weather permitted, the girls began practicing for the class tennis matches which were high lighted by friendly rivalry and good competition. When the tennis contests were completed, softball, archery, and golf enthusiasts headed for fields and greens. A successful season, filled with activity, came to a close with these sports.
