K ...g ' . -N ' dedication Our Staff this year has been moved to dedicate this, the 1953 Saxigena, to the principle which you, the students of Slippery Rock State Teachers College, have dedicated your lives. And al- though it is a spirit, it is by no means a ghost. For the Spirit of Education has a liveliness of demeanor fostered and engendered by the dreams of some men, the thoughts of others, and most im- portant of all, by the actions of such as You. The Spirit of Education is no Wraithlike, diaphenous phantom. No! Rather it is a concrete entity shaped into an irresistible force by the sweat and toil of the hands of the American Laborer, the staunch convictions of our Businessmen, and the faith of our country's great Leaders in an educated democracy. And so we must keep that spirit alive by pouring into it the concrete manifestations of our teaching profession. We must keep that spirit alive by giving to it a part of our own livesg and in the end We shall be the happier for it. That to which we have dedicated the 1953 Saxigena, the Spirit of Education, lies within these pages. We hope you recognize Her. 6 7 JMX f 6 K MI!! ip' :g ,gZgw X 1 if 126 ew Qi. ,N .vga ' 1, , QE if f Z i ...4 - --1-1: ADMI NISTRATIQN DR. DALE VV. HOUK President of the College To the Class of 1953: The late Dr. J. Linwood Eisenberg was President of Slippery Rock State Teachers College twenty-five years ago when the iirst degrees were granted. I am requesting that his words to the Class of '28, which appear below, be reprinted for the Class of '53 as a tribute to the President of a quarter of a century ago. Let's start the second quarter of the century with the ideals given to the iirst four-year class. A During the days and weeks and months and years you have spent here as a part of the student body it has always been our aim to instill into your minds the love of high ideals and the dig- nity of the profession which you have chosen. We trust that these efforts have not been in vain but that you may become as imbued with the beautiful and upright in life, and the dignity of the privi- lege of passing these on to the coming generation that those with whom you come into contact may catch the spirit and so continue a never-ending fountain for good. D. W. Home IO DR. LEONARD S. DUNCAN Dean of I mtruciion To the Class of 1953! Children are precious. They become men and women. They are alive. They will continue to grow and to learn. We dare not push them aside. We dare not neglect their welfare, for they are citizens of this world in which we live. A better world can be made, not through invention of more gadgets, but by improving man's relationships with his fellow men. Teachers and parents have sobering responsibilities. May your life be filled with satisfaction. LEONARD S. DUNCAN II , i v? '25 . V ' gif T Mlss Lois J. HARNER MRS. ELIZABETH TOMB Dean of Women Assistant Dean of W amen The understanding ways of Miss Harner, Mrs. Tomb, Mr. McCord, and Mr. Eiler have made them more than faculty members. They are real friends who are always ready to make our life here at Slippery Rock a happier one. Those of us- who live in the dormi- tories know of the untiring services offered to us by our Deans. For their guidance and kindness, we the students of Slippery Rock are deeply indebted. MR. THOMAS T. MCCORD MR- JOHN R- EU-ER Dmn gf Men Assistant Dean of Men 1 I2 DR. CLARENCE M. LONG Society has the right to expect the youth of our colleges to become men and Women of character and culture. May your college career give you this develop- ment. JOSEPH A. MCCLYMONDS i ii There is no job in the world more im- portant than a classroom teacher, but when you join the ranks of that worthy group next fall do so with humbleness. Sitting in the classrooms will be our future citizens-presidents, statesmen, minis- ters, teachers, tradesmen and, yes, crim- inals and thieves. Knowledge must be imparted to them. Skills must be devel- oped in them. But above all, through your guidance and direction, there must grow within the heart and soul of every one of them a desire to contribute to the best of his ability to a better America. The task will be great. Approach it with a feeling of responsibility and a de- termination that this great nation WILL be better because even a few of its future citizens were privileged to call you teacher. C. M. Ashland threw a scare into the Rocket eleven by scoring on the fourth play after the kickoff, but from then on the Rockets were in charge. The Storermen took the ensuing kickoff and marched 85 yards for a score. Joe Pekar plunged three yards to cap the drive. Midway through the second period John Brown streaked off tackle for six yards and a touchdown. Brown's placement split the uprights and the Rockets led 13-6 at halftime. The third quarter found sophomore halfback Ed Hepe scoring two touchdowns on runs of three andi twenty yards. The Rockets' final score came in the fourth quarter when guard Heinie Bleich recovered a fumble in thevend-zone. SLIPPERY ROC K-no EDINBORO-13 The big Green's second victory came at the hands of a spir- ited Edinboro eleven. The Rockets scored early in the first quarter when Joe Pekar blasted over from the one-yard line. Seconds later Edinboro scored on an intercepted pass by De Carlo. Later in the same period, Pekar once again plunged over, this time from the two. The second period was featured by a Sawhook-to-Brown pass which netted the Rockets their third touchdown and a 20-13 halftime lead. The Red Raiders rallied bravely in the second half but they could only manage to push one touchdown across on a pass from Whartenby to Parks. MUSKINGUM-27 SLIPPERY ROCK-6 The Rockets suffered their first loss at the hands of a power- ful Muskingum ball clubg however the score doesn't indicate how close the game was. The second quarter proved fatal, as Muskingum scored three touchdowns and left for intermission on the long end of a 20-o score. Early in the third quarter Ange La Furia took a handoff from Bob Sawhook and raced 61 yards unmolested for the only Rocket score. The Muskies scored again in the 4th quarter and the game ended 27-6. This game was featured by the spirited play of the Rocket defensive platoon led by Co-captain Chip Patchel. SLIPPERY ROCK-32 INDIANA-6 The Rocket eleven gladdened the hearts of a capacity Homecoming crowd with a stunning 32-6 victory over Indiana. John Brown scored in the first quarter on a thrilling 69 yard punt return. Jack Hyland then threw two touchdown passes, one to Bill Meehan and the other to Hugo Fiorante, and the half ended 20-Q in favor of the Rockets. The second half saw the Rockets explode for two more touchdowns. The first was the result of a Hyland-to-Meehan pass which Covered 35 yards and the second came on a five-yard plunge by fullback Jim Ruesch. The Indians scored in the waning moments of the ballgame and the Hnal tally showed the Storermen vic- torious 32-6. SLIPPERY ROCK-o SHIPPENSBURG-28 The Rockets suffered their second loss of the season at the hands ofa power-laden Shippensburg eleven. Statistics proved that the game was closer than the score indicated, but the superior power of the Raiders' single wing attack was evident throughout the ball game. The Rockets threatened several times, but fumbles proved fatal on many occasions. Shippens- burg scored in each of the four periods to earn a hard-fought victory. SLIPPERY ROCK-I3 GENEVA-13 Slippery Rock and Geneva fought to a stalemate before a large Homecoming crowd at Reeves Stadium in Beaver Falls. The Rockets led at half time 7-o on a I2 yard pass from Hyland to Hepe. The Covenanters marched 31 yards early in the third period to knot the count at 7-7. Coach Bill Storer's eleven regained its edge in the 4th chapter as Ange La Furia raced 40 yards on a double reverse for the touchdown. The Covies then marched 56 yards and scored from the 3 on a run by John Kipler. A series of desperation passes by the Rockets proved futile and the game ended in a I3-I3 deadlock. SLIPPERY ROCK-o CLARION-1 2 Clarion's bowl-bound gridders defeated the Rockets I2-o in a hard fought contest. Midway in the first quarter, Al Sanglusky scored on a 7 yard pass from Dave Benwine. Clarion scored again in the second quarter when Bill Eustice scored on a lateral from Benevino. Slippery Rock's only threats came in the second and fourth quarters when Quarterback jack Hylandfs passes began to hit their mark. Each time, how- ever, the Golden Eagles' defense stiffened and the threat was halted. Ange La Furia, The Rockets' leading ground gainer, was injured in this game and was sidelined for the remainder of the season. SLIPPERY ROCK-I4 WESTMINSTER-6 After trailing 6-o at halftime the Rockets came back to Finish a successful season with a well-earned I4-6 victory over Westminster. The win marked the 14th successive victory over the Titans from New Wilmington. The Titans scored early in the first quarter on a Banikfto-Mantz pass. The Rockets finally forged into the lead when Ed Hepe scampered over from the seven. Hyland's placement was good and the Rockets led 7-6. Ray Glausser scored with three minutes remaining on a plunge from the two, and Hyland converted, to make the final score read 14-6-Rockets leading. This game marked the end of the gridiron career for several Rocket seniors. They are Co-captains George Wilwohl and Chip Patchel, John Borres, Paul Frye, Sam Cianflocco, Charles Ehmer, Don Strang, Bud Ward, Bob Sawhook, Ange La Furia, Steve Statnick, and Ray Glausser. Coach Bob Smiley's Rocket Quintet unveiled the 1952-53 season with a 63-62 triumph over a spirited Alliance five. The Smileymen came from behind to win on a last second shot by Bob Nor- ton, who led the scorers with I4 points. The Big Green Five returned from Christmas vacation to garner an impressive victory over Carnegie Tech. Tom Pikunas led the scorers with 20 points and Co-captain Charles Neuschwander chipped in 19. The following week, the Rock found little opposition in an inexperienced Edin- boro quintet, and walked off with an easy 92-67 victory. East gym was jammed to capacity when the Geneva Covenanters met the Rockets in a battle of unbeaten quintets. When the smoke cleared, the Covies were on the long end of a 92-83 tally. Pete Kinkead was the mainstay for the visitors with 27 points, while Pikunas led the Rockets with 24. After a shaky start the Big Green rallied to beat an underdog Clarion five 68-65. Pikunas again led the scorers with 22 markers. In their next outing the Smileymen collided with a rangy Allegheny five, considered one of the best in Western Pennsylvania. After trailing by I3 points at the beginning of the fourth period, the Green wave rebounded for a thrilling 76-72 tri- umph. There were five Rockets in the double figures with Tom Beck leading the way with I9 points. ' Indiana was next to fall beneath the onslaught of the Rocket Cagers. Sixteen players saw action as the men in green thoroughly trounced the Indians 87-46. Chuck Neuschwander led the brigade with 18 tallies. The following Saturday, a trip to Cleveland proved successful as the Cagers routed Fenn Col-' lege 90-64. Neuschwander led again with 25 markers and Beck chipped in with 20. After lead- ing by only 6 points at the half, the Rockets ral- lied for 23 points in the third quarter and for 33 in the fourth to completely demolish an inex- perienced Fenn quintet. Youngstown was next to visit East Gym. The Penguins were one of the three ball clubs to beat the Big Green Cagers in the 1951-52 season. The IO3 Smileymen gained sweet revenge by handing the visitors an 81-57 lacing. Co-captain Earl Zink- ham paced the locals with 22 markers. Indiana threw a scare into the Rockets in a return match at Indiana. The Indians left the floor at halftime on the long end of a 37-34 count, however, the Smileymen regained their usual form and rebounded for an 86-67 triumph. Pikunas and Neuschwander each had I9 points to pace the scorers. ' Akron University brought a highly touted ball club to Slippery Rock for a match with the Big Green. This was one of the tallest quintets ever to play in the Rocket gym, however the local boys were not to be denied as they outplayed the visi- tors in every phase of the game and walked off with a stunning' 107-90 triumph. The Rockets based their attack on a blistering fast break which completely bewildered their taller opponents. Chuck Neuschwander dumped in 33 markers followed by Tom Beck who tallied 27. Every good team has its bad nights. The Rocker Cagers were no exception as they bowed to a spirited Mount Union five, 64 to 48, on the vic- tors' home floor. The game was marred by poor play, and at times resembled a foul shooting con- test. This can be evidenced by the fact that Mount Union scored only one more field goal than the Rockets, but made good on 34 foul attempts against 20 for the locals. Earl Zinkham tallied I6 pointsfor the Rockets, followed by Tom Beck with 11. After a rough night at Mount Union the Rocker Cagers got back on the winning side of the ledger with an easy 76-62 triumph over Steubenville. The Big Green five had little trouble up-ending the inexperienced Steubenville quintet. Chuck Neuschwander led the Way with 20 markers while Bobby Norton chipped in with 14. At this point in the season the Rockets boasted an I1-2 won-lost record with three games left to play. Co-captain Chuck Neuschwander led the scorers with 15.9 point average per game, while Tom Pikunas had a commendable 15.5 average. The Rocket freshman team also enjoyed a very successful season. They were victorious in eleven contests, while losing one game to a powerful Geneva five by six points. Firsl Row: S. Kemmerer, J. Gualardo, G. Petro, I. White, J. W Kotua. Serond Row: T. McGaHic, W. Sporting a six win two defeat record, the Rockets have a good chance to end the season in fine shape. Captain Ray Glausser has rounded into good shape and has been the leading sprinter. Freshman Perry Greenawalt is piling up a number of points in the 220 and 440. Fancy diver Bill Logue has also been a valuable point maker. Other standouts on the Jonah squad are Simpson, Romzy, and Peters in the sprintsg Randolph and Dilts in distance swimming, Campbell and Smith in the breaststrokeg Coulter and Weller in the Back- stroke. Coach Jonah will lose only Captain Ray Glausser by graduation. There is only one Junior on the squad-Dean Simpson. Although the Slippery Rock varsity Gymnastic Team is the only non-competitive sport on cam- pus, they are kept very busy with many exhibi- tions throughout Western Pennsylvania. The high schools visited were Sharon, Brookfield, Punxsutawney, Greenville, Langley, Mercer, Brockway, Slippery Rock, Hubbard, Ohio, and Gladstone Junior High. On many occasions the Gym Team per- formed two and three times in one day which we think is quite a. feat. 107 5 J shi ,4- 41 Q, X . , M Q ' O 1 ,Uv 'x . v W: 'W 5 Tit . -P 3 ' ,, 1 , X MEI? ,QQ ' ?3i2i?i3i:2gf, 545' ' M. ,---'NME A V X fgrjg , gf, - 1 -s. ' IIII3. f-s W.A.A. got off to a fine start in the fall with the orientation of the freshmen girls. Getting ac- quainted was the purpose of the International Playday, as the girls participated in activities such as Goofy Ball, Master of The Ring, Softball and various other games. Italy poured forth the most energy and was rewarded for its efforts by finishing in first place and winning initial points in W.A.A. Autumn also introduced the game of field hockey. To many it was a new and exciting sport, although the upperclassmen were veterans to the game. With practice, the freshmen were soon able to give the others rugged competition. The tournament was completed successfully without the intervention of snowy weather, and the Green and White Teams battled it out for the champion- ship. White proved to be the stronger team by defeating the Green Team after a hard struggle in four games. By the end of the hockey season, cold weather had set in and all the girls filled the gymnasium to recuperate while engaged in the milder sport of volleyball. Others wishing to soothe their wounds by bathing, spent their time in ye ole swimmin, pool. Every Wednesday night the gym was the scene of high tension and activity. Elementaries, Sec- ondaries and Health Eds. scurried across campus to take advantage of the volleyball novice night. .v . 4 .Q 1. . I ,li llKQll Iff iJLi II By the time class teams met, all had spent hours in preparation for the Cleanup Tournament. The Junior Class was triumphant by winning the volleyball crown. December rolled around and once again it was time for the annual Christmas party. Skits, carols and refreshments highlighted the gala evening, thus drawing another year to a close. After a short vacation, 1953 saw us back again for some additional activity. This time it was the hoop game popularly known as basketball. During the season the majority of the time was spent practicing the art of shooting and passing. Red Ryder lassoed Hopalong Cassidy for the Cowboy Round-up and Buildings On Cam- pus knocked each other around until Old Main was left standing. Class basketball soon followed and a class feud was on. All teams played to the best of their ability attempting to defeat their challengers. It was at this time, when several girls took their National Officials Rating Test. The spring season opened the curtain to new and varied activities. Enthusiasts for softball headed to the diamond, the female Robin Hoods took bow and arrow in hand while the call fore was the byword for the golfers. Needless to men- tion, there was the invasion of the tennis courts which was the scene of the annual spring tourna- ment bringing to a close another activity-filled W.A.A. program.
