THE 1952 SAXIGENA DEDICATION In this small way, we wish to acknowledge the devotion and sacrifice made in our behalf by two people. Our lives have been made richer and fuller by their having lived. On July 3, 1951, Dr. Pierrepont H. Nichols passed away. In the death of Dr. Nichols the College has lost an inspiring teacher, a loyal colleague, and a man whose integrity and warmth of personality gained for him the respect and affection of all who knew him. During his sixteen years of service at Slippery Rock State Teachers College, he gave to his students a wealth of information gleaned from the printed page, enriched by extensive travel both at home and abroad. He will long be remembered by a host of friends and by those students who share his appreciation of the best in literature and in life. Lieutenant Paul Clawson was called to active duty on November 15, 1950. He fell in Korea on May 21, 1951, just a few days before he would have graduated. During his stay at Slippery Rock, Paul was one of the most enthusiastic and well liked people in his class. He was a member of the football team, gym team, and Varsity Club, was vice president of his class when a Junior, and was a member of Student Government, among other activities. Paul was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for the gallantry he so conspicuously displayed fighting for a cause which he believed to be good and just. We shall be forever in his debt. 2 NEW IMPROVEMENTS One of the outstanding features of 1952 was the new improvements evident on campus. The new Power Plant and Bookroorti are the most obvious examples of the modernization wave that was fell at Slippery Rock. The new Power Plant which is nearing completion will provide athletic facilities and make available a modern, efficient healing and power system. Fast becoming one of the most beautiful spots on Campus, the new College Bookstore, which has been completed, is a favorite stopping-place for everyone. It makes possible the efficient purchase of supplies, which was once a real task. These two major features, together with a great many minor ones, strengthened Slippery Rock’s reputation of being one of the most beautiful colleges in the state. THE NEW POWER PLANT THE NEW BOOKSTORE 9 Administration Dr. Dale W. Houk President TO THE CLASS OF 1952: In the Saxigena published in 1932, Dr. J. Lin wood Eisenberg, who was then President of Slippery Rock State Teachers College, wrote as follows: “You are entering the teaching profession at a critical period in the life of the Nation and the State. The same could be said of the affairs of the Nation and State today. Your duty as a teacher will be not only to teach fundamentals, but to instill in the hearts of American boys and girls the attitudes and loyalties upon which our free society depends—to instill in their hearts the ideals of our democracy so that the American way of life will become more meaningful to more peoples of the world. May your career as a teacher bring you the satisfactions which come from a life of service; may success in the highest sense of the word be yours; and may the blessings of the Supreme Iking be with you at all times. mm 12 Dr. Leonard Duncan Dean of Instruction TO THE SENIORS: “What you are speaks so loud, I can’t hear what you say,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson. What a terrific responsibility this places upon teachers! In a world which cries for moral leadership—a world in which we sec so many doing what they can “get away with” — teachers must set an example by adhering to high standards of moral integrity, and must teach, above all other things, that right comes ahead of wrong. Be proud to be a teacher. Be the kind of teacher who merits the respect of boys and girls. This is the challenge I would like to place before the Class of 1952. 13 Thomas T. McCord Dean of Men When you entered Slippery Rock four years ago it no doubt seemed to you that graduation was a long way in the future. Now you have achieved your goal, and we congratulate you and wish you great success in your efforts to teach the youngsters in our public schools. There never has been a time when the need for teachers of excellent character, fine personality, honesty, and integrity was as urgent as it is at the present time. The Faculty of your Alma Mater have placed their confidence and hope in you. Only time and your efforts will justify that faith. Good luck, and God bless you. John Eiler Assistant Dean of Men As you leave S. R., you become a member of a larger family; it is a happy family and a very important one —our alumni. You, as an individual, become more important and happier as we on campus gain any prestige; the school, in turn, succeeds as you gain. May you take with you into your work a vision — one great enough that as you teach you give others that vision: a vision of their potentialities, of their trusteeships, of the value of simple integrity and honesty. Lois J. Harner Dean of Women Dr. Clarence M. Long Director of Laboratory School As many of you entered the Laboratory School for the first time you evidenced a look of insecurity and doubt. It has been a pleasure to watch this change to one of confidence and assurance. Your relatively brief stay at college and your teaching experiences in the Laboratory School should provide a foundation for the growth which will take place throughout your teaching careers. With your college days practically a thing of the past, you.are faced with the task of proving to Mom, Dad, friends, and, most important of all, to yourself that you have what it takes to be a teacher. We think you do or your certificate would not be forthcoming. It will take time, patience, and perseverance, all of which must come from a desire within your heart to do the best job possible. Teaching is not easy, but it is fun. To counteract the dark days will be bright days that will warm your soul to the very heights of enthusiastic satisfaction. The apex of such feelings will come to the staff here at Slippery Rock when you have proven yourself worthy of the name, “Teacher. Dr. Joseph A. R. gridders came from behind to down Westminster’s Titans. The Rocket’s scoring punches were provided by a pass from halfback Bill Kisiday to end Bill Meehan, a pass from quarterback Bob Sawhook to end Ed Eyles, and a thirteen yard plunge by fullback Dave Johnston. The win kept Slippery Rock's 14 game winning streak over the Titans intact. SLIPPERY ROCK 0-WEST VIRGINIA 13 Slippery Rock’s home opener was spoiled by a defeat at the hands of West Virginia Tech's Golden Bears. Capitalizing on a fumble on the Rocket 19 yard line, the Bears scored the first touchdown and, with two minutes remaining in the first half, they scored once more. The extra point was good and that ended the scoring in the game as the Rocket defense tightened and held the Bears scoreless the rest of the afternoon. SLIPPERY ROCK 13-EDINBORO 6 Coming from behind again the Slippery Rock football aggregation got back into the win column by downing a stubborn Edinboro team. Edinboro scored first by recovering a first quarter fumble on the Slippery Rock 30 yard line and turning it into a touchdown. The Big Green came roaring back as Steve Statnick took the kickoff back to the twenty-eight and eleven plays later co-captain Dave Johnston scored from the three with Hyland adding the extra point. Midway in the second quarter the Rockets recovered a fumble on the Edinboro thirty-three and a few plays later Bob Sawhook scored on a quarterback sneak from the one-yard line. SLIPPERY ROCK 7-MUSKINGUM 20 A little All-American quarterback candidate from Muskingum added a tinge of disappointment to the Homecoming weekend festivities for 1951 as he passed for two touchdowns and set up the third. Fumbles also played a large part in the defeat, as two Rocket fumbles were converted into touchdowns by the Muskics. End Ed Eyles, who ended the season eleventh in the nation in pass receiving among small colleges, added a highlight to the game as he caught 10 passes during the afternoon including a touchdown pass. At half-time services were held for the late Paul Clawson, last year's quarterback and co-captain who lost his life in Korea during the past summer. SLIPPERY ROCK 7—INDIANA 12 Slippery Rock's gridders failed to snap Indiana's undefeated streak of five games as the Indians came from behind in the last four minutes of the game to win. The highlight of the game from the Rock's viewpoint was freshman Ed Hepe's 77 yard punt return for a touchdown that enabled the Rock to lead until the final four minutes. SLIPPERY ROCK 21-MT. UNION 19 Ignoring the fact that they were 14 point underdogs, the Rockets handed the Mount Union Purple Raiders a stunning defeat by capitalizing on every break. On the opening kickoff guard George Wilwohl recovered a fumble on the Mount Union 32 yard line and two plays later Hyland scored and added the extra point. Sixty-six and fifty-two yard drives went 47 yards for paydirt and Hyland converted to put the Rock ahead by two points. With two minutes gone in the last quarter and the Rockets trailing 19-14, Hyland hit 'Travers from the twenty with a pass and Travers raced eighty yards for a touchdown. SLIPPERY ROCK 14-CLARION 19 The Rocket gridders closed their 1951 football season by bowing to Clarion for the first time since the schools started playing. Clarion jumped to a two touchdown lead before Dave Johnston broke through center for 17 yards and a touchdown in the second quarter. Trailing 19-7 in the fourth quarter, the Rock scored its final touchdown when Johnston scored again from one yard out. Hyland split the uprights after each touchdown. 90 91 SEASON S RECORD S.R. Scoring three times in the first quarter and once in the third quarter, the Rocketmcn left no doubts as to which team was the better one that afternoon. Ken Stimmel and Ken Ball did all the scoring with two goals each, and Ken Ball’s clean shot from fifteen yards was the highlight of the game. SLIPPERY ROCK 2-WESTMINSTER 0 Scoring early in the first quarter and late in the last quarter, the Eiler-mcn went on to remain undefeated and unscored on in two games. After their early score the Rockets seemed to fall apart but came roaring back in the second half with some brilliant offensive play by McAl-pine, Stimmel and Ball, and some equally good defensive play by Donaldson and Thomas. Also among the standouts was Jack Stemper, who gave the Titans plenty of trouble throughout the day. SLIPPERY ROCK 5—WESTMINSTER 1 The Rockets showed plenty of class as they again met'the Titans from Westminster and this time snowed them under. Although the Rockets showed much more class than in their previous encounter the Titans managed to put the first score of the year over the Rocket’s goal line. Stimmel scored twice, while Stemper, Ball, and Liscinsky each added otic. Liscinsky’s score came while the entire second team was on the field with all the forward line on the play. SLIPPERY ROCK 4—ALLEGHENY 1 After a first half in which the Rockets seemed destined to defeat and which was highlighted by three sensational saves by Skip” Zinkham, the Eilcr-men found the range and went on to defeat one of the toughest opponents of the year. Mike Estocin sparked the “Rock” to red hot play in the second half when Stimmel, who had scored once in the first half, scored twice again and McAlpine added one for the icer”. SLIPPERY ROCK 4—FROSTBURG 2 The Rocketmen again met a toughie” in the strong Frostburg soccer team who started the game with a bang by scoring almost immediately. The never-say-die boys of Coach Eiler came roaring back to take the lead with McAlpine and Stimmel each scoring before the end of the first quarter. Another score in the third quarter by Ball was followed by a score by Frostburg which kept the game close until midway in the final quarter when Ball scored again from 20 yards out. SLIPPERY ROCK 1-OBERLIN 2 With only 70 seconds remaining in a torrid game, a foul was called within the Rocket penalty zone enabling Oberlin College to ruin Slippery Rock’s quest for an undefeated season. In this game the score does not tell the whole story for the Green of Slippery Rock, hampered by extremely bad weather conditions, was the master of the play throughout the afternoon. Paced by Don Black’s 19 points, the Green Wave completely outplayed and outscorcd the opponents, and Alliance could only gather two field goals in the entire first half. Clarion S. T. C., defending champs of the Mythical class B District Crown, gave the Rockets their first loss in two starts. Despite Don Black’s 31 points and a valiant second half comeback by the boys in green, the Golden Eagles took a well-earned 72-71 decision from Slippery Rock. Black scored 24 of his 31 points in the first half. The Rockets returned from Christmas vacation to hand a 57-55 upset to Carnegie Tech in a nip and tuck battle. The Big Green led most of the way but were never ahead by more than five points. Tech forged ahead in the final minutes and their attempt to “freeze” the ball failed as Slippery Rock's Tom Beck rippled the cords for the victory. The following week the Rockets ran into trouble at Edinboro and had to come from behind once more to score a 61-57 victory. The Rock trailed by a 26-18 score at half-time, but led by Don Black’s 23 points the Rocket dribblers slowly pecked away and finally took the lead in the final stanza for the win. A capacity crowd flowed into East Gym to witness the second game with the Clarion Teachers. It was a very close game until the final period and the half-time score was 35-35. Flic Rockets stayed with the Golden Eagles at the end of the third quarter 52-52, but the visitors then broke loose for a 77-64 victory. Clarion’s Johnny Wiberg captured scoring honors with 27 points. Geneva displayed the class that made them one of the outstanding teams in the state as they defeated the Rock 76-68. Slippery Rock had a four point lead at the end of the first stanza but the Covenanters went ahead early in the second period and were never headed. Geneva’s Kin-kcad led the scorers with 31 points, followed by Don Black with 20. Scoring almost at will, the Rocket passers roared to a 91-48 victory over Edinboro S.T.C. in the second game with the foe. Headed by Chuck Neuschwander’s 19 point attack the Rock moved ahead early in the first quarter and it was no contest” throughout the game. The S. R. cagcrs forced the highly touted and heavily favored Youngstown Penguins into an overtime period before being edged 65-63. Youngstown converted 17 of 25 free throws while the Rock made only 11 of 24. Trailing 47-38 at the three quarter mark, the Rockets tied the game at 58-58 at the end of the fourth stanza. Meyers’ lay-up in the final second gave the victory to the Penguins. Don Black’s 25 points were high for the evening. Slippery Rock ventured to Indiana and had to come from behind to win their fifth win in eight starts by a 62-60 score. The Rocket basket-teers were again led by Captain Don Black who scored 17 points to win the scoring honors for the evening. The Indians dominated play throughout the first three periods and seemed headed for an upset victory until sub Ed Ol-kowski scored four field goals in the final three minutes to ice the contest.
