Now that it has, we find ourselves in the confusing situation of being both elated and expectantly anxious. To further explain our feelings we would like to tell you a little more of the heart and soul of the book which you are now reading. This Sax” had its beginning in the spring of 1950. With the help of the preceding staff we were initiated into the problems of yearbook planning. During the summer, however, planning really began in earnest, and we came back to school eager to get to work on the actual book. We will never forget the splendid co-operation which we received from the Seniors, Administration, Faculty, and Underclassmen. Without their help our task would have been impossible. Our main purpose in creating this edition of the “Sax” has been to provide the class of 1951 with a book which they will keep all their lives to remind them of their college days. If we have only succeeded in this respect, all our efforts will have been more than worth while. Therefore, it is our pleasure to present to the class of 1951 their Saxigena. It has been an honor to have had the privilege of creating it for you. Our only hope is that it meets with your approval. No better example can be found of such a person than Mr. Clyde Lady. No person who has ever watched him briskly walk across campus, or listened to his clear, sharp voice, or watched his keen eyes dance back and forth as he addressed you, can help but Ik- deeply impressed by him. “Discouragement” seems to be a word which he has never even included in his vocabulary. He is always able to meet every situation squarely, conquer it, and move on to greater achievements. Because of his wholesome and vibrant personality Mr. Lady has become to us not only a teacher and an advisor, but also an inspiration. If we can but imitate his splendid example, our lives cannot help but be enriched. To show our appreciation for all he has done for the students of Slippery Rock, we humbly dedicate the 1951 Saxigena to Mr. Clyde Lady. 6 13 Director In the four short years which he has been here, Dr. Dale W. Houk, our president, has become such a popular and familiar figure on campus that it would be hard to think of Slippery Rock without immediately thinking of him. Through his capable leadership, the intellectual, moral, and social life of the college has progressed very rapidly. His pleasant smile and agreeable personality have made him a friend to all. Prior to accepting his present position at Slippery Rock, Dr. Houk was Supervising Principal of Forest Hills schools and Assistant County Superintendent of Allegheny County. He received his higher education at Park College in Missouri and the University of Pittsburgh. Because of his untiring efforts to be of service to the students of Slippery Rock as an administrator, educator, and friend, we pay tribute to Dr. Dale W. Houk. 16 Dr. Leonard S. Duncan — Production Director T Dr. Leonard S. Duncan, our Dean of Instruction, came to Slippery Rock in September of 1946. He is a graduate of Geneva College, and completed his post graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Pittsburgh. Formerly, Dr. Duncan served as a principal and a teacher of English at Rochester, Pennsylvania, and as a vice-principal and a teacher of English at Peabody High School in Pittsburgh. Dr. Duncan is one of the first we meet at Slippery Rock, and certainly one whom we shall always remember. His constant efforts in leadership, cooperation, and intelligent counseling have helped to make our college careers a richer experience and have helped to better prepare us for future life. 7 Dr. Clarence M. Long— Staging Director Special Effects by Dr. Clarence M. Long is new at Slippery Rock this year, and is at present serving as Director of the Laboratory School and Director of Placement. Dr. Long attended California State Teachers College, and took his graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh. Since then his experiences in education have been great and varied; as a teacher, principal, and county superintendent, he has dealt with many phases of school work. We are glad to welcome Dr. lx ng to our campus, and will cooperate with him in every possible way. MISS LOIS HARNER Dean of Women English 18 MR. THOMAS T. McCORD Dean of Men Education Dr. Walter R. Yes, these past few years have been important ones for you. The colorful strands of rich experience which were woven into the pattern of your life will not be quickly forgotten. These years at Slippery Rock have also been important because of the friends you have made—friends with whom you have lived, laughed, and learned. These are your friends for life. For many of you college has meant long hours of concentration, countless texts to absorb, and endless papers to compose. Nevertheless you have succeeded because you refused to let any obstacles stand in the path which led to your ideals. Carl Schurz has said, “Ideals are like stars. You will not succeed in touching them with your hands; but, like the seafaring man, you choose them as your guides, and following them, you will reach your destiny.” MA Hon Kap CHI Deb Inte YM Gan JAIV Can Mas tary Tern BE Y V President Vice President Treasurer Secretary Robert Bidwell Jerry Clover Calvin Giles Carolyn Bolster MARILYN E. Anders Vice President Kenneth alker Treasurer Robert Appleton Acting Secretary Katherine Emanuclc The representative organization of the students of Slippery Rock is the Student Government Association. This association, organized and operated by the students, has just completed its thirteenth year of successful service. Each class chooses from its ranks three people who will represent them in Student Government. Students arc proud of the fact that the main purpose of this association, government by the students themselves, is completely fulfilled. Faculty members and administrators are invited to the meetings of the association and work in cooperation with the representatives to accomplish improvements on the campus and to solve problems which arise. Active student participation and co-operation are vitally important if this organization is to continue its excellent service as official voice of the students. 60 Saxigena Staff... The second ideal is that of Fidelity to Humanity, which is the maintenance of faith in the improvability of human nature. The third is of Service, the spirit of education. A second quarter pass from Goltz to Kyles, a recovered blocked kick by co-captain Neiman, and a line plunge by fullback Johnston accounted for the Rocket TD's. Rizzardi added one extra point. This was the first time since 1939 that a Westminster football squad scored against a Rock defense. Slippery Rock o—West Virginia Tech 20 Fumbles proved the deciding factor in the second game of the 1950 football season as The Rockets “handed” the Golden Bears from West Virginia two third-period scores. The Bears added a third marker in the final stanza on a pass completion. Slippery Rock jp—Edinboro 7 Scoring in every quarter, the Storermen got back on the win road with an easy rout of the Edinboro Red Raiders. Goltz tallied first on a 63 yard romp and added another six-pointer a few minutes later from two yards out. Rizzardi scored both conversions. Johnston closed the period’s scoring with a seven-yard buck. Slippery Rock added one in each successive quarter on a buck by Kisiday, a Sawhook-to-Eyles pass, and a four-yard plunge by Johnston. Bassett added one extra point. Edinboro scored late in the second quarter on a blocked punt. Slippery Rock 7—Muskingum 47 The big line and fast backs proved too much for the Slippery Rock gridders as the Muskingum squad romped to a 47-7 victory. Although driving into enemy territory several times the Big Green could capitalize only once. Travers intercepted a Muskie pass to set up a Sawhook-to-I.a Furia neutralizer. Travers added the extra point. Slippery Rock 7—Indiana 16 A big quarterback with an uncanny passing arm partially disrupted the Homecoming Weekend festivities as Indiana’s Shaffer threw three touchdown passes for the visiting Indians. It took almost four quarters for the Rockets to muster sufficient scoring power. Again it was a pass interception by Travers that set up the tally with Johnston plunging to paydirt. Travers added the conversion. Slippery Rock 12—Mount Union 6j Once again an Ohio team seemed too powerful an obstacle for the Slippery Rock Rockets as the Purple Raiders from Mount Union scored at will to hand the Big Green its worst lacing of the season. However, a Hvland-to-Eyles pass play, covering 59 yards, put the Rock in the scoring column in the third quarter. The Locals added another in the final stanza on a Hyland-to-Kyles aerial with Evles lateraling to Berdell for the marker. The play covered 78 yards. Slippery Rock was without the services of co-captain Xeiman, who was recalled to the Marines. Slippery Rock 20—Clarion j The Slippery Rock Green and White outlasted the Clarion Blue and Gold before a frostbitten crowd to annex its third win of the waning gridiron season. Clawson scored on a quarterback sneak midway in the first quarter, following a fumble recovery by Lawrence. Hyland added the extra point. Clarion roared back, but was unable to dent the Rocket goal line as the Big Green line held firm. A Clarion pass completion in the second quarter gave the Ixxrals a scant one-point halftime lead. Clarion scored early in the third stanza to go ahead. However, a 35-yard Goltz-to-Eyles pass dead-locked the contest. Three minutes later Lurty blocked a Clarion kick that rolled out of bounds on the one-foot line. Statnick skirted right end for the score. Hyland added the extra point. Slippery Rock 6—Shippensburg Without the services of co-captain and quarterback Clawson, who was recalled by the Army Reserves, the Gridders dropped the final fray to Shippensburg College, 35-6- Slippery Rock drew first blood with Goltz scoring from the one foot line. A Sawhook-to-F.yles aerial set it up. A loose pass defense, however, proved fatal as the Burgers connected consistently via the air lanes. It was the third undefeated season for Mr. John Filer since he took over the coaching reins in 1946. As a tribute to Mr. Filer for his accomplishments the members of the soccer team presented him with an engraved trophy at the end of their undefeated season. His teams have accumulated 36 wins against three losses for an outstanding .923 record since the end of World War II. The Rocket Booters handily defeated Kent State, Indiana, and Krostburg before they met powerful Oberlin. Playing on the local muddy field the Big Green could not break the stalemate, despite the addition of two extra periods. After steam-rolling over Edinboro, Allegheny, Westminster, and Carnegie Tech, the Eilcrmen unceremoniously dumped highly rated Kenyon of Ohio from the undefeated ranks. Center forward Buckey paced the local scoring for the third straight season with 10 goals, followed closely by co-captain Bruno with seven. Stimmel tallied seven times and Farelli and Giles thrice each to lead the forward line. The Booters tallied 35 goals for a game average of 3.88 while holding the opponents to seven for a .77 average. Guza and Farelli were given honorable mention on the All-American Team for the 1950 college season by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. They were also selected on the second team All-Pennsylvania-New Jersey aggregation. Bruno won a fourth team berth on the All-Pennsylvania-New Jersey squad. With the serious loss of eleven lettermen, Mr. Filer will be forced to rebuild around Ball, Stimmel, McAlpine, O’Connor, Donaldson, Stemper, and Zinkham. Those having played their last college game are Giles, Spataro, Clover, Buckcy, Myers, Bruno, Shreve, Guza, Murphy, and Welsh. 99 mm Wmk mm Cross-country Because of illness and frequent injuries Slippery Rock State Teachers College cross-country squad fell below expectations. The University of Pittsburgh and Westminster College turned back the locals 16-39 and 25-30 early in the season but the Rockets bounced back to defeat Mount Union at Alliance, Ohio, 21-34. Geneva downed the locals 25-30; Oberlin invaded the local track in the final dual meet and defeated the I lessmen 18-37. Playing host for the Tri-State aggregation, Slippery Rock relinquished its championship won in November, 1949. The Rockets dropped to third place despite the hard running of Ken Walker, who won the individual honors. Toler placed 11, Karl Walker 16, Roby 23, Jones 26, Scarvell 30, Halen 31, and Brandt 32. The highlight of the season occurred during the Oberlin meet when Staley of Oberlin broke the course record set by Nick Costes in 1949. Mr. Ford Hess, coach of the squad, was called to active duty in the United States Navy following the Tri-State meet. Ken Walker was the only letterman who was a member of the 1951 graduating class. Coach Bill Storer returned after one year’s absence to lead the hoop-sters to six wins in eighteen outings. The Storermcn started the season on the right foot with a 44-39 win over Alliance College. Don Black tallied 15 points, followed by Don Goltz who scored 10 markers. In the second game the scoring was evenly divided among the entire squad as they downed Clarion 64-59. Tom Beck’s play-making was outstanding. Mount Union squelched a fourth-period rally to shade the Locals 61-59— their first setback of the season. Black and Goltz scored 17 and 13 points, respectively. The following Saturday Carnegie Tech led all the way to win 62-51 on the Plaid home court. Slippery Rock fought an up-hill battle against a rangy Edinboro squad, only to be handed a 61-60 setback. “Skip” Zinkham led the scoring with 15 points, closely followed by Black and Goltz. While Black, Neuschwander, and Goltz paced the point makers, the Clarion Staters avenged their earlier reversal by soundly beating the Big Green machine 73-58. After leading by ten points at half rime, the Rockets failed to stop four Geneva forwards who scored at will to lead the down-staters to a 65-54 victory. Denniston, a mid-term graduate playing his last collegiate game, paced the locals with 14 points. Faltering during the final stanza the Storerites dropped their sixth straight game to the Indiana Indians by a 75-62 score. Black was high man, scoring 21 points. It was an inspired ball club that hammered Edinboro to submission to the tune of 90-65. Black hit consistently for 13 field goals and 5 fouls to tally 31 points. He was aided by the back-court scoring of Sauers who hit for 21 points. Continuing their winning ways, the Green and White led throughout to down Oberlin 72-5000 the local hardwood. Goltz led the scoring with 22 points. Star forward Jacklitch’s 34 points were too much to cope with, as Fenn dropped Slippery Rock 70-63. Black captured runner-up honors with 22. Youngstown scored nearly 50% of their shots to penetrate the Locals’ zone defense and win 79-61. Black’s 13 markers took show honors behind the Youngstown forwards. The Ohioans from Wooster bounced back from a half-time one-point deficit to record a heart-breaking 61-60 win over the game Rockets. Wooster scored one more foul than Slippery Rock while the number of field goals were even. Zinkham led with 17 points. Indiana recorded their second victory over Slippery Rock 78-53 on the Indiana home court. It was a matter of too much outside scoring punch by the Indians. Bethany outlasted an injured S.R. quintet in a benefit contest to register a 77-60 win. Goltz led the scoring with 16 markers. In the next contest the Allegheny Alligators outlasted the Rockets and handed them their twelfth setback 64-56. Besides leading the scoring with 12 points Stempcr also played an outstanding defensive game. Proving that a fighting ball club is a winning one, the Storermcn went on to capture their last two frays. They drubbed Steubenville 74-49, with Olkowski setting the pace. The final contest was a decisive 73-60 triumph over Thiel College. Black, Sauers, and Goltz led the quintet scoring with 17, 15, and 14 points, respectively. In the yearly scoring department Don Black led with 251 points for a 14.7 points per game average. He was followed by Goltz, Zinkham, and Sauers with 205, 12! and 106 points, respectively. Since only two seniors, Denniston and Sauers, were lost by graduation, Slippery Rock students are looking forward to a terrific season next year. Manager Kacz 103 mmMi Skip Comes Through! Miss Bader Mr. Eiler Under the guidance of coaches Dolores Bader and John Eiler the Slippery Rock Gymnastic team performed to approximately 10,000 people during the 1950-51 season. A proud and happy squad began practice early in October in order to prepare themselves for the demonstration exhibition of the Annual Pennsylvania Physical Education Convention held at Carnegie Tech. Throughout the year exhibitions were also given at New Castle, Imperial, Turtle Creek, Munhall, Evans City, and Hubbard, Ohio. The Hubbard exhibition marked the first time any Slippery Rock Gymnastic learn had performed outside the State boundaries. The home exhibitions of March 14-15 were the final performances of seniors Barnes, Ncdde, Slevin, and Woodworth. The cocaptains for the season were Jcannie Barnes, Willie Cavill, Tom Slevin, and Fred Woodworth. Our gymnastic team was the only varsity squad which contained both men and women. The girls included tumbling, marching, tap dances, wand drills, and modern dance in their routine. Tumbling, parallel bars, springboard and elephant, and clown act constituted the men’s drill. 108 Sitting Pretty! 109 Track hint Row: J. Coeficld, J. Dally, R. Glausscr, K. Walker, N. The 1950 edition of the Rocket thinclads, under the leadership of Coach John Eilcr, won three duel track meets and placed second in the triangle meet with powerful Mount Union and Westminster Colleges before they were finally dethroned from the Tri-State championship they won in 1949. Nearby Grove City College outlasted several determined rivals and used its depth expertly to secure the coveted crown. Captain-elect Dale Rose scored the Rock’s only Tri-State win in the discus. Captain Harry Brownfield, suffering all season with a sore muscle pulled during the indoor season, dropped from the dashes, surrendering the 100-yard crown. Captain Nick Costes lost his crown late in the two mile race to Grove City. Midle-distance runner Dick Toler was shaded by .4 of a second in the grueling 440 yard dash. Toler paced the point-makers for the second consecutive year to establish himself as one of the best all-round runners to wear the green-and-white in recent years. Members of the 1950 squad who did not return were sprinters, Brownfield and Glausser; hurdler, Ziegler; pole vaultcrs, Brucker and Donaldson; high jumper, Denniston; field men, Conlon and Frew; runners, Cameron and Murphy. Holdovers from the 1950 squad were runners Fuller, Johnston, Spataro and Toler; the Walker twins, distance runners; and Captain Rose. SEASON’S RECORD S.R. They swept their last four matches for a 9-1 record. Co-captains Ned Khorey and Bob Williams composed the number one doubles team. Dick Wert, a Penn State student, was undefeated in dual competition. The Rockets averted a loss to powerful Westminster in a return march and thrashed Thiel on the local links to revenge an early season loss. The locals placed seventh in the Invitation Tournament held at Allegheny. Hockey season opened with the demonstration game between the Black and the Blue. Freshmen really were initiated into the game with the Old Maid Shuffle as the Fanny Batters came out on top. As Autumn approached, the leaves fought for top position and Catalpa and Sycamore tied for first place. Class teams ended with much excitement and the glorious Green and White fought their way to the goal cages. Although the battle with the Pittsburgh triangle club was lost, 3-2, enthusiasm was not dampened for the remainder of the season. As Old Man Winter crept close, W.A.A. sponsored a College Play Day, which was attended by representatives from six colleges. Great fun was had by all as new friends were made and games were entered into with much zeal. Regular Wednesday night sessions began as Bashful Beatrice ran ahead to be picked up. As the winds blew and snow began to fall, Sleigh rode ahead to take the invitation tournament. Havoc broke loose as the Freshman Dinks walked away with top honors. Jingle Bells and “Silent Night ushered in the W.A.A. Christmas Party. Santa Claus almost didn’t get there as the reins broke, the sleigh stuck in the doorway, and the reindeer fell into gales of laughter. The stars come out as Mars jumped to first place in the basketball pick-up tournament. The Hit Parade became well known as popular songs contested for first place. “Abba Dabba” pulled through to rank number one. Attention turned to cards as the .ices played to a fighting finish with the Freshman Ace of Clubs trumping in. As the last swish of the basket was heard and the whistb blew a note of finality, Green and White played a hard and well-fought finish. Screams were heard from the direction of the swimming pool as the “scaboogie” was practiced by everyone. Heads up was yelled frequently as anxious girls raced the length of the pool and many tried new rescues on poor unsuspecting victims. Swollen hands and sore wrists accompanied the handball and ping-pong tournaments as girls raced from the second floor to the gym to the downstairs. Any one could tell when spring approached by the sight of balls, mitts, bats, racquets, and clubs. Girls came streaming out of the dorm at the break of dawn to practice for the tennis and mushball tournaments. Surely the motto of W.A.A., A sport for every girl and a girl in every sport,” has again been successfully maintained. Le Jo Ca.ro!
